Please explain to me what this shit is, and why everyone on this board shits on it non-stop.

Is it some kind of suburban shopping mall place that sells clueless baby boomers and weekend warriors cheap Chinese junk for 3000% markups? Some kind of richfag store that exclusively sells normie-targeted Premium Brands® gear that perform just as well as cheaper brands that cost 1/10th of the price? A pseudo-milsurp store that sells crappy tacticool shit marketed at LARPing fatasses and teenagers? A hipster place that sells artisan sleeping bags hand-sewn from organic vegan materials for $1,000?

That's the thing, the website just seems to be that of a standard outdoor gear retailer.

And as you know, everything is ten times cheaper in North America than it is in the rest of the world no matter what store you talk about, so I can't really tell whether the pricing is good or bad for America.

Just a standard store that sells standard if somewhat overpriced brands like Patagonia, North Face, etc. They also have a store brand for entry-level equipment. I have a tent of theirs, it's fine. Their publications portray a liberal political stance, which is a recipe for butthurt channers. Likewise, they only cater to the subsection of outdoor activities which interest liberal city dwellers: backpacking, biking (ahem excuse me, CYCLING), rock climbing, kayaking, and apparently yoga. Absolutely no hunting/fishing gear. Wherever you're from, I'm sure you have an equivalent to "REI people:"

OP, REI is a good store, but you have to know what you're buying. I purchased a tent for $114 that they were selling for $140, but that's not the worst of their mark ups. They'll sell a Lodge cast iron pan for $60 when you can find the same pan at Wal Mart, Target, or Lodge's website for under $20.

It's a big store and they have a wide selection of gear and clothing (and also a small climbing wall). Some of it is good quality, "brand name" gear that is generally recommended. Some of it is made in China, off-brand gear and clothing. They put their own name on it, so it's "REI brand," but that doesn't really mean anything. The off-brand stuff gets pushed hard by the salesmen, so the reviews you hear are somewhat biased toward being used by clueless users. Some of it is borderline junk, in my experience, some of it will perform just about as well as better gear. They do have a solid warranty for all their gear and great return policy for everything else, but I'd rather just buy the gear I want and not have to deal with a return.

My biggest issue with outdoor gear stores, not just REI, but pretty much all the outdoor stores local to me is that like 80% of the inventory is clothing, 10% is bicycles and maybe 10% is gear. Of the gear, 90% is entry level junk that I'd never use or buy.

Even the clothing is mostly entry level, non-enthusiast-oriented. Not too long ago, I went in there looking for some uninsulated polyester hiking pants that don't zip off into shorts, aren't loaded down with cargo pockets and aren't so lightweight that they go "swish-swish" as you walk in them. It sounds like I'm being very specific, but I'm really not. I'm describing basic hiking pants and I've found that Patagonia makes a model that fits my needs exactly. However, I left REI stores empty-handed three times over different seasons and had to just order the pants online eventually.

This is a common misconception especially since Amazon came along. It's not that REI raises prices, it's that other retailers discount their prices, REI doesn't sell anything higher than MSRP.
Also REI loves coupons and sales. There's the Member Sale, the Anniversary Sale, the Summer Clearance Sale, the Winter Clearance Sale plus they often have manufacturer specific discounts through out the year. So if you figure all the coupons, sales and the 10% members get back then they're actually pretty on par with other big retailers.
That being said, a lot of what they sell is useless wank, but that's true of pretty much every big /out/door retailer. Useless wank has a great profit margin.

Slightly different principle with Netflix, they know their braindead userbase will watch any old schlock so long as it meets a few bulletpoints.
Bright exists purely because Netflix's computer algorithms determined that cop dramas, urban fantasy, and Will Smith are all popular so all three at once should be very popular indeed. And it worked, despite being a terrible movie. It's getting a sequel.

The quality can vary a lot depending on who is designing it and who has the contract to make it. Sometimes they even get other big /out/ companies to make it for them, but that's getting less frequent.

Last time I was in America was over a decade ago, but God damn was every parking lot in a National Park or State Forest filled with them. It fucking blew my mind how there are people in America who honestly prefer to spend $60,000 on a literal house on wheels because they're scared of sleeping in a tent. Of course everyone who came out of the monstrosities was middle aged or above.

It's just a store that tries to make money. Almost everything you buy in this country is consumerist crap but if you make it camoflauge and stamp it "Made in the USA", it's okay to disregard the fact it was made with the same, cheap imported materials and with the same cheap manufacturing practices.

If you want it to last, you have to spend a months rent on it. It's pathetic but true. Our economy is depends on growth. The industrial society we live in today views sustainability as stagnation. REI sells expensive stuff that costs too much. Generic outdoor stores sell is cheap shit that we have to replace too quickly. Which do you think is the lesser of two evils?

It's ridiculously common for store brands to basically be cheaped-up brand-name products. The process is simple:

This is the standard process in just about every industry, from clothing to food to /out/ gear. It's why you can often find a store-brand product that looks almost exactly identical to a brand-name product, but is cheaper and has a significantly shorter lifespan and durability.

The late 90s/00s was when REI brand stuff was at its best, IMO. Designs were simple, build quality was pretty good across the board and it really did fill that niche between discount and designer. That was the era that produced the Half Dome tent and the Flash 18 day pack which are still some of their best selling products.

I worked at the flagship store for six years. It's a for profit co-op, those exist. The REI Foundation was a charitable non-profit that was founded in 1993 by the for-profit business REI.

And a percentage of it does get put into the REI Foundation, which is the non-profit affiliate of the for profit business. The foundation funds all of REI's community outreach & education programs, grants, etc.
70% seems like a lot, but you have to remember that the majority of that will quickly get dumped back into the business during the Member Benefits Sale and the Anniversary Sale, both of which happen right after the dividends come out. REI as a business is pretty flush with operating capital and they're more insulated from economic fluctuations than publicly traded companies. During the 2008 slump REI was still opening new stores when other chains were posting record losses.

I dislike that Bass Pro bought Cabela’s. Dick’s doesn’t give a fuck about /out/ stuff, they’re an apparel store. Sports Authority is kill. No Academy around here. And most of the independent places around here don’t have the inventory. That’s why I like Bass Pro and Cabela’s. I’m willing to spend a little more over Dick’s because they have a better selection.

So Cabela’s and Bass Pro are the last two major retailers. And for the time being it seems like Cabela’s is still the same, but I will be bummed if they change them to Bass Pros and have all the same inventory and pricing since it will be the only place to go aside from online retailers.

It's a fucking store that specializes in general outdoorsman stuff, unfortunately no guns or hunting stuff, and they have pretty good discounts, coupons, and sales for their members. Plus membership is pretty cheap.
It's cool if you know what you're looking for, and also they provide other information and services like backpack fittings and offer instructional classes, they arent free tho.

It's good for someone like me who lives in the city and likes going /out/ on the weekends, but it's not ideal for someone who's into extreme innawoods/self built cabin fags

non-profit also doesn't mean it can't make a profit, just that that profit has to be reinvested into the company or used for some other kind work related to the non-profit's goal.

REI is a co-op that shares its profit with members of the co-op, and by doing so, they literally cannot be considered a non-profit company. Because sharing profits with members of the club isn't charitable.

REI does, however, have an associated non-profit corporation, called the REI Foundation, that uses money it gets to support outdoorsy shit.

I can definitely see myself getting an rv once backcountry camping becomes more difficult with age. The Cabela's and REI people are two sides of the same coin but misperception and misunderstanding creates unnecessary problems:

1. Short of Wildlife Reserves, all natural resources are managed for multiple use. The biggest divide in management is the National Park Service does not manage for hunting (w/ exceptions). You'll find it is common for the "sportsman" to use BLM, state or private land that is managed for game. On the other hand, the land available to sportsmen isn't always managed as well for REI people. Natural resources are even managed for commercial use. The point I'm trying to make is these resources are part of the public trust. There is something for everyone.

2. The REI people struggle can struggle to understand the importance of human action in management. To the untrained eye, a clear-cut looks only like human exploitation but the intention could be habitat or wildlife management. Sometimes preservation requires human action and hunting can be a necessary tool or a source of income. Despite some people's perception of guns or resource use, the goal is the same: multiple use and ecosystem management. The exceptions are wildlife preserves, natural parks or places with threatened or endangered species.

3. In a city, "avid hiker" is a way of explaining their interests to people who cannot relate. In rural areas it's just an expectation that people enjoy being /out/ because it's just what people do for fun. People will usually label themselves as not interested in those things instead. Labels become important for people with diverse interests. Most of the time, these labels are simply ways of communicating. Just because someone says they like to hike doesn't mean they can't appreciate the value of sportsmen and the role they play in conservation. If they can't, it's only because they have yet to understand the relationship.

I've seen that Lodge pan in the store for something like $60 a2 years or so ago, it's not crazy to assume the price fluctuated over time because they perceived less of a demand for it. $40 is still expensive, but certainly more reasonable though. Exactly this. I'm by no means someone who really views himself as right wing, except maybe for the 2nd Amendment bit, but I'm a little put off by some of the stuff they say. It's really more Patagonia though, even though make good gear (expensive but good). The fact they don't have hunting or fishing supplies and that I can get most shit from their store off of Amazon has stopped me from going anymore.
