I see your point, but my envy of the German economy discourages agreement. You lack wilderness to go truly /out/ - but 90% of the time you live in a tidy and generally prosperous environment.

t. My country is 50.3% forest, but economic activity, apart from farming that now takes 10 times less hands than 100 years ago, outside of the capital is non-existent, so it's either move to the city or be poor-ish.

some plantation are very industrial but many are somewhat normal forest with normal biodiversity. newer forest are planted a bit more mixed and natural. but lots of the postwar stuff is strait row monoculture.

There is lots of good /out/ places in Germany.

Try Teutoburger Wald in the West, Sächsische Schweiz in the east, the Alps , Frankenwald etc. Also, the former inter-german border has a very low population density.

Sure, we don't compare favorably to the US or canada (though there's also a lot of large metro areas where you can't do shit) or even Scandinavia, but there's some options. And then densitiy has some benefits. Even if you live in say NRW, the Sächsische Schweiz or the real Schweiz is just a rather short train ride away, whereas across the pond you often have to do a 2 day car travel to get to a change of scenery.
You just have to make do with what you got (and occasionally take some long holidays…).

Take a couple hour train ride to eastern eu. Poland is beautiful. Slovakian mountainside, amazing. Hungary has some nice forests, and Tisza-Körösök river area has some pretty good lake-forest-swamp-cleanriver areas (I had a pretty good canoe trip there). Also Romanian forests are amazing. I heard very good stuff about Estonia and Lithuania, i didnt have a chance to visit yet.

Not the anon you are replying to, but areas like the Pfalz/Pfälzer Wald, the Eifel or the Rine valley between Köln and Mainz (and the Hunsrück and Taunus "mountains" next to it) should be reachable from the Netherlands.

Possible: Yes
Legal: Of course not! (except for Sächsische Schweiz and the alps above the tree line).
But if you are careful and not an idiot, you often can pull it off, but yeah, it's kinda hard.

Hows the situation in the netherlands? You folks still have about 10km of coastline left that's not a harbour or a dike, camping on the beach sounds nice, but can you?

I live in a place with a similar predicament. Claustrophobic as all living shit, the only real advantage is that you'll never find yourself in a survival situation and you can hike off-trail as much as you want without any fear of getting lost, because it's not physically possible to walk in any given direction for longer than 5 hours without encountering a highway, village or whatever.

The most terrible part though is no old-growth forests because those medieval dumbfucks just couldn't keep their hands off the god damned trees. What I wouldn't give for a single patch of old-growth forest here, MURIKA ADOPT ME PELASE.

You're not wrong. Aside from a handful of places in the Alps and a random forested area south of Paris (I think ? I remember hearing about it a while ago while discussing primary forests), there isn't a single "old" forest left unexploited in Europe west of Poland.

Hate to say this, but the situation in Europe really changed my understanding of population control. Tripping over somone's propety every 10 feet is not comfy. I live in Canada and feel so damn lucky to have so much /out/ space, but my fellow North Americans don't seem to understand and they wish to import a billion fucking people here for the economy. Dutch bureaucracy says nay. Sleeping on the beach is included under wildcamping which will land you a 140 euro fine if you get caught. I know of some area's where the beach is patrolled at night, so I'm not sure if I'd go for it due to the exposure. I've never tried sleeping on the actual beach myself, but the photo in this post ( >>1258067 ) was a wildcamp in the dunes near Schoorl with a view of the ocean in the distance. It's an absolutely beautiful area, and when I was there it wasn't too crowded either (hence I dared setting up camp out in the open like that).
