Had a few dieoffs due to high ammonia levels, but thats just due to it was his first time and he didnt know how many to keep in a tank at one time. Also had a fishery in his garage for the fry to raise new fishies.
The entire system was fairly self sufficient. Only things you really need to watch for are ammonia levels and keeping the motor running. He also had two catfish in the system my buddy and I brought home from a day of fishing. Cats kept the bottom clean and the tilapia kept the top clean.
