Hey /out/, I just found out I got hired at a teen adventure company this summer. I'll be in San Fransisco, Tahoe, and Yosemite with two other leaders and 12 6-7th graders.

Really excited for this experience, and I am getting my WFR through my uni in preparation. Anyone have any advice, books, or resources to better prepare me for this summer? Never really worked with kids desu but I'm a pretty friendly and open guy.

Bumping with more info about my trips this summer. We go on a two day trip down the American River (with a guide). Then we kayak and paddle board in Lake Tahoe. We'll climb and hike for a couple days in Yosemite. Finally we'll surf in San Fransisco and spend a couple days there.

Really stoked to get paid to do this all summer. My parents really wanted me to get an internship but I think this will be more fulfilling for me.

Thanks anon. I've worked with them a bit in youth sports, and my mother is a school principal so I often would come in to help them out.

The company is Moondance Adventures (https://www.moondanceadventures.com/). The founder is an ex NOLS guys and went to University of Alabama (my current school). They seem to really try to cultivate a good atmosphere for the kids and I'm all on board to help make that happen. Two of my friends have done it as kids and now lead the trips, they always joke that this will be the experience that gets me to quit engineering.

so i feel like a bit of a dumbass now for asking that again, but at least you have a bit. fwiw i think it's a great age range-so much that i've gone back to school to teach middle school. stay positive and don't let them walk on you and you'll have a great time and they'll follow you to the ends of the fucking earth.

full time now. though in the last couple years he's moved more into the organizational aspect than guiding groups. guiding tended to be more seasonal/part time.

I agree with you on it being a great age-range, seems like a place where they are still so full of wonder, curiosity and growth. I can imagine leading similar trips with 15-17 year olds brings on entirely different problems / challenges.

That's cool that you teach middle school anon. My friend always told me (he did the same exact trip) that the kids will try to test you and push your limits so I'm trying to be prepared for that.

Outward bound looks amazing, wow they have a really impressive site. The Moondance Company is a pretty Southern based thing I think.

I'm from Arizona and Nevada but become a southern transplant because Bama offered me a big scholarship. Love the South and the people I met here but really wanting to get back out West.

do NOT let them see you get pissed at them. it's okay to be stern when they're really fucking off, but don't show annoyance at their needling. at the same time don't try too hard to play it off like you don't care, because they know that's weakness, too, and will keep escalating. it's a fucking tightrope, and you'll wobble like hell at first, but once you get your balance you're golden.

I’m from Yosemite, native Miwok on my mom’s side. It’s an amazing place. Be sure to keep the group together and never let anyone wonder away alone even for bathroom breaks. Lots of people go missing every year there. It’s really easy to get turned around even just getting off the trail a little bit. I’d recommend everyone having a whistle, it’s cheap and can save your life. Other than that it’ll be a blast. Stay safe.

Words cannot describe how excited I am to visit Yosemite. I am big into photography / videography and am really looking forward to taking some cool pictures out there. My buddy told me lots of stories of the kids toying with him. He can get visibly pissy so I think he opened himself up to some of that. We do three trips, so by the end of the summer I'm hoping to have a good sense of how to walk that line. Thx for the advice.

College Station is a cool town, y'all are all fanatics but I guess the same can be said for Bammers. Were you there in the Manziel era? Tuscaloosa is cool but most people here just get drunk and care about football.

don't expect to have to much time to take too many composed shots while wrangling kids. i recommend just bringing a point and shoot.

use a buddy system for accountability. let them pick their own, but remember troublemakers stick together, so they can rev each other up, but it'll effectively halve the the number of kids you have to watch..

yosemite WILL be a fucking madhouse in the summer, but 90% of the people will be within 1/4 mile of pavement, 9% will be on the major trails (upper yosemite, mist, etc.) and the other 1% will get to enjoy some privacy spread across literally 1000 square miles. but even with the crowds it's worth it. i've been 30+ times and still am awestruck. are you driving the van, or is someone else? and be ready to chase bears away from camp. my cousin had to run purple #6 away everytime he took a group to the valley.

and i was class of '02 (like i said-a thousand years ago), so i got to watch manziel from home, but never saw him live.

I have a DSLR with some lenses and two GoPros will be provided by the company. I think I may let the kids each rotate days where they operate the GoPros and end up making a cut for them to highlight their trip.

The DSLR will probably have my 50mm lense on and I'll just snap some quick shots of the kids and scenery as we go along and I have time.

Like I said, I have two coleaders who will be with me and I think we'll be able to manage. The buddy system sounds like a good idea. I believe I'll be driving the van since I have the proper license for it. I know navigating San Fransisco with a van of kids is going to be a fucking nightmare.

I've had some encounters with bears when I was a boy scout, but being in charge will be a totally new experience. Yosemite has Black Bears which I understand aren't as aggressive. Gotta teach the kids about proper campsite care and locking food up.

As for keeping tabs, frequent headcounts a good idea. I assume because of the age group and time you’ll be spending there you won’t be going into the back country much if at all. The tourists can be a little much sometimes. Most are decent but there’s always some shitty people. There are lots of foreigners that visit from all over the world, it’s a good opportunity to chat with people from other countries. The rangers and park personnel are pretty good at their jobs and are very knowledgeable of the area.
One big thing is don’t try to interact with the wildlife. The deer there actually account for most of the animal related injuries and deaths. It’s usually someone will try to take a picture with one because they seem docile. I ounce saw a group of tourists corner a black bear that wondered into the village in Yosemite valley. I was working there and had to tell them it’s a large predator and to leave it alone. As long as you use common sense you will be just fine.
