What do you sleep on while /out/?

Foam, air pad/mattress, hammock, etc? Looking for something to put under my sleeping bag and my old Coleman foam pad is not comfortable enough especially when side sleeping.

I use my knife to baton out a bed. I carry a blow up mattress to put on top. Then I build a cabin around myself, and screen in the windows with a roll of screen that I also carried. As for food, I mostly eat Funyuns because they are very light and that mattress gets heavy.

I've had a couple quechua ones that looked very similar to the prolite (they're all pretty much the same though) which both just started going down on me one day. I put them in the bath and everything to check for bubbles escaping but couldn't find shit. Something weird going on, some kind of magic air escape. I suppose the answer to your question is "maybe". A couple I've had have sucked dicks, but that's not to say that others might be better. It's certainly more of a risk than a recognised well tested brand though.

I have the thermarest underneath, the inflateable on top of it about %80 inflated 1 season sleeping bag on top and then a fleece thermal liner around everything mats and all.

It helps keep the mats in place under you .if you really suck the air out of the the thermarest you can make a fairly small bedroll out of that lot and its more comfy than my bed at home

big agnes has some good looking stuff that's super lightweight that you like. I go for the inflatable items. Thermarest is super solid choice, too. the "klymit" is pretty cool for sleeping pads also. It seems to be one of the smallest (packed down) and lightest. Its design is surprisingly comfortable, but I've never tried it through a full night. Might need to upgrade the mat, it is very light and comfortable, but it could be better on the isolation side. I bought it for a cycling tour in a temperate climate, and it worked great for this purpose, but now I'm going back to the mountains and a little more insulation would be good.
The sleeping bag is godtier.

A lot of times I just make sure there's not rocks or roots under my tent (if I use one) before I set it up. I use a cheap old foam pad for long trips, though, and when it's cold enough out to warrant a little insulation. The comfiest thing I've used though, other than my father's Cabela's cot w/ mat, is pic related.

Usually the mats will have recommended values for ground temperature. I three season hike in the Rockies in Canada and while it doesn't get to -50°C either, it routinely gets down to -10°C and a foam mat wouldn't be sufficient insulation for me.

How much does that weigh compared to the ultralight sleeping mats? Mine weighs about 450 g and was less than $100. If the price/weight difference isn't much, it might be worth it to just get a mat instead!

Don't know too much about these things but from my experience 8mm will be fine for 2/3 season camping in Europe, although I imagine you would probably notice the difference when the ground temperature begins to drop in winter.

I'd be interested to know what other people think as at some point I'm probably gonna upgrade my shitty torn up one i use for sleeping out in the summer

I sleep on top of my mt.rainier 0 degree sleeping bag when it's 50 degrees or above with a wool blanket over me, I go inside my sleeping bag if it's below that and if it's bullshit cold I line the bag with the wool blanket. Essentially I can sleep comfortably in any temp even 0 degrees. It's just fine in the summer too.

to add one last thing, if you have a two person hammock(i prefer eno because they're not bulky) you can have all of your gear with you and you'll be safe and sound. Who needs a tent when you have a hammock? Just string some tarps around and you've got 20 minute super shelter.

A $5 pool raft. I have a dual-action hand pump, the kind you put your feet on, grab the handle and start pumping. It pumps as you pull up and push down. And you can plug the hose into the other side to have it suck air out. It makes inflating and deflating a breeze.

A strong vacuum requires a lot more preparation. Usually it means a vacuum chamber without any measurable particles inside, and it's a pain in the ass to create in a lab.

The issue with that theory is wind...it sucks heat just as bad as the ground contact. I sleep on top of a wool blanket in mine and it helps, but winter is still an issue.

Yeah - I have slept on a hunk of Blue Foam for years - I always double-it up a bit so it is twice as thick under my hip and shoulder.
But I am thinking of Z-lite : the folding looks practical and fast than a Roll ; it might be slightly more comfortable than a Roll.
- I am not convinced by the self-inflators : reliability is a question and I slept on one once and found it rather cold even above freezing.

I have both the z-lite and an REI lite-core self inflatable. I usually end up sleeping on the z-lite while my gf gets the litecore bcuz girl.

z-lite is great and cheap, but it has actually cause some bruising to my back before when i slept directly on it. It looked like I had been attacked by an octopus or something.

I'm not sure what you mean by "in the wet". They are very water proof, I've woken up in a puddle without a drop of water inside the swag. The only downside is you cant spent a rainy day inside like you can in a tent.

My fiance an I both use a Thermorest Neoair All Season teamed with the lightweight down coupler. As for shelter, we carry a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3 tent. We appreciate the little extra space the 3 person gives. Yes it adds a bit of weight, but the comfort, even when side sleeping makes it worth it in my mind.

You can read a book in the pretty comfortably.

I'm yet to go camping in one, but my family has 3 of the things. A tarp over the top lets you keep the heavy cover open in the rain to get some breeze through it.

To those that don't know.
Traditionally a swag was a bit of canvas and a blanket. It was used by itinerant workers called swagmen. I think the cultural (not material) equivalent is a bindle. These days a swag is usually a foam mattress in a canvas bag.

The current ones are pretty bulky, you wouldn't want to hike with it, that is for sure. My brother has his already made and just rolled up around the blankets and a small pillow. Good for car camping.
