>>1265247>>1263206>>1263367>$80 is a steal for something that'll last me like 20+ years, in my opinion. If $80 is a lot to spend for you, don't get it. If it's just a hat for hiking, you can get any wide brimmed hat and it will function very similarly. It's just a hat after all.
If instead you like to paddle a canoe for 12 hours straight, do any labour/heavy lifting in direct sun all day, or fish all day, you may consider it money well spent.
I'm fairly new to this specific board and still trying to figure out what people mean when they say a piece of gear is a meme.
It seems to me people on here are generally against spending 'a lot' of money on a piece of gear, but for me that goes out the window when I know I need to 100% rely on that piece of gear to work perfectly and keep me comfortable.
The best I can figure out, a piece of gear is a meme if it's all style+hype and little function. Tilley is pretty much the opposite of that; you look like a fucking dork unless you are in your 60s with a big white beard paddling a cedar strip canoe with your dog through the backcountry... but it works well.
Again, if you don't have the money to spend, don't get it. A buddy has the OR Sombriolet and it looks great too, and half the price of a Tilley. Another friend uses a camo boonie hat that he prob paid like $5 for; he seems to like it and it seems to work for him. He can buy a new boonie hat every year for the next twenty years for the price of one Tilley.
Consider how much you can realistically spend on a hat and how often you would really use it. Also consider if you really need such a hat for the types of trips you go on and the climate you will be in.
For me, I wear my Airflo every weekday in the summer, so it's worth it.
For others, they might use such a hat maybe 10-20 times a year, so that may not be worth it.
