Condensation is a bitch.
Also, there are tarps like this pic, but they aren’t particularly effective if there is wind driving the rain sideways. The advantage of a separate fly is being able to pitch it different ways to accommodate the storm.

So I was first time hammocking last week, but trying to stay on my small as fuck pad in the hammock while sleeping was a pain in the ass and very uncomfortable.

I know an underquilt is the solution, but since I'm a broke as fuck student, I can't spare another 100 shekels.

As far as I remember i saw an infographic about making one with a blanket for car windscreens. Anyone has it and would share?

If you’re taking about the mylar windowscreens, they have all the same annoyances as a pad. Try searching for diy poncho liner underquilt. They’re kinda heavy and won’t take you to as cold as a proper underquilt, but they do job well enough for as cheap as they are. Otherwise, if you have an old sleeping bag, you can modify that for an underquilt instead.

Two things. They make pads for hammocks, look up hennessy hammock pad, that's what i use sometimes, and it's 40$. Also look up kindle underquilt by yukon outfitters. I have an extra, and I'll sell it to you for the same price. Goes down to 40, both of them. If you can't afford that, you should forget about comfort entirely.

Spent a small fortune on my hammock camping gear recently. Went for the Warbonnet Blackbird XLC in International Orange. Should be here this week along with my top and under quilt and hex tarp. Pretty fucking pumped to have a real setup finally.

It varies from person to person but generally sleeping in a hammock you'll experience the dreaded CBS (cold butt syndrome) in anything under 18 C with no insulation. Personally, I'm a furnace when I sleep and I still find myself in need of one around these temps.
You're going to be very uncomfortable and probably unable to sleep well without a pad or underquilt at 5-8 C.

If you're going to sleep in it you're going to be miserable at any temperature without some kind of under insulation. If you already own a camping pad you can just put that in the hammock though and use it.

If you're going for minimalism/ul just get a bivy or 1p tent. Hammocking can be comfy af and there are a million other reasons to love it but it is not what you're looking for. What you want is basically a bivy except at that point there is no reason for it to be a hammock, because the suspension will only add weight to your giant tarp burrito.

You did fine, I think that's a good price. Just fyi not all bugnets are created equal. If you live in bug-hell you just want to make sure that you want to buy something that is no-see-ums proof. The actual size of the mesh can vary and if you're buying something off amazon depending on the seller it's kind of a toss-up whether the product actually does what they say it does sometimes.

Also the clips onto the suspension are redundant, if you are counting weight just scissor them off and slip your bugnet tube right around your hammock before you hang everything

I not pictured here but I just barely got myself a Chameleon, and bought my girlfriend a Dutch Half-zip w/ HG 10F incubator econ, the underquilt should be coming in this week or next, we're both pretty excited about that.

Pick related is my old Dutch netless w/ HG Incubator 10F, and the WB Superfly. That tarp is cozy as fuck. I'm gonna miss sleeping in the ol' netless, but the chameleon is just too damn comfy, plus not having to deal with bugs is a huge plus.

Thanks. The description and reviews do mention that it's no-see um proof. I live in North Texas, so my biggest problem are the bird sized mosquitos. I do plan on making this my primary sleep option, though, as it's been better on my back than sleeping on a pad on the ground.

Bit of a gush here lads, what you see is the first time I ever hung my one and only hammock, the hennessy explorer xl asym zip. It's amateur at best, and I froze my ass off all night long. Why? I had what was called the kindle underquilt, by yukon outfitters barely on my hammock. It's a taco shaped underquilt, which means you have to straight lay in it. Since then I have gotten:
-snakeskins
-hex fly
-better straps
-modded it to hang with craabiners
-the jacks 'r' better mt washington 3 underquilt

which is kind of a funny story, because after ordering the nest originally from jacks r better i called thewm and had a friendly conversation for half an hour in which they determined i should get the washington, since i have a zip hammock. wonderful people, and the best customer service i have ever experienced.

You should just bite the bullet and get a UQ if you're willing to drop $150-250. I used a Sea-to-Summit Camp SI for about a year and a half and then a ThermaRest pro-lite for about 3 years before that. The step up from pad to quilt is incredible, I'd highly recommend it.

Hehehe gotcha. Seems like you've got your eye more on bridge hammocks, you see the WB Ridge runner? I'm not much of a side sleeper in a hammock and even if I was I prefer the aesthetics of the standard gathered ends more.

If you do upgrade, look into some upgraded suspensions! I've got beetle buckles right now but I'd really like to try out a marlin spike / whoopie sling set up. That's been my latest addiction is trying out new suspension / dutch blind, thusfar spent money on hookwormz, flyz, and tarpwormz, and a few dutch biners. Shit gets to be too much fun.

i assume this refers to, like, if the line that goes to the tree spreads out before meeting the hammock or goes directly to the hammock? no idea what this actually means for the hommock or how you are supposed to sleep in it, i just sleep in it

i havnt seen anything that was faster, easier and more convenient then my 2 Mekonomen car straps and 2 carabiners, ofcourse i could do it all with rope, but just keeping the rope part for adjusting is way easier, it seems most of the attachment things or gadgets for suspension/connecting is just replacements for doing knots and ties

Gathered end hammocks are what are in all my images, where the hammock ends are whipped together to a single point, in these you're wanting to lay on an angle for the most comfort, although some people do still lay straight in them. They also typically want a lot of sag, about 30º from hammock to suspension.

A quick google search of "gathered end vs. bridge hammock" will yield some good comparisons for ya.

Bridge hammocks are a bit heavier because they have bars at each end that spread the hammock evenly, so you can lay straight (and on your side) without having any problems with calf-ridge.

Some of them, for sure, but not the case with all, like a marlin spike hitch. It's a lot more about weight and volume savings. I've tried all sorts of suspensions, from bare bones rope and biners to paracord and tree straps, but those were always really bulky compared to my current setup.

That depends on what you mean by fitting two people - just for lounging? a wide (ENO and their clones call these hammocks "double / two-person") hammock would work out, and I've had a friend who sleeps with his girlfriend in the same hammock.

But if you're planning on sleeping in the same hammock, I'd first tell you to avoid it at all costs, and if you're still trying to sleep in the same hammock; get ready for a sweaty, uncomfortable night. It's really cozy and cute at first but it gets horrible after just an hour, because your bodies will sink into eachothers, creating tons of pressure points and generating a lot of heat.

Dutch recently came out with something pretty nifty, it's a spreader bar that connects to a few of his differnent suspension connectors, this way you can have two hammocks hanging from the same two trees, pair that with a double net and you've got yourself a cozy little hang where you can kiss your miss goodnight. I haven't tried either of those options yet but it sounds like fun.

I wanted to ask you about underquilts as well. I'm sure you've picked up that I'm a budget camper, so I wanted to get your opinion on pic related. Since I live in Texas I really won't be dealing with any significantly cold nights, but at the same time I wanted something that would be sufficient if I ever travel to where it might be colder. Do you think this would work or would I be better off just biting the bullet and getting a more expensive one? I've never owned or used an underquilt, so this is new ground for me.

Avoid any underquilt shaped like that. They restrict a diagonal lay. They're cheap junk.

Spend a little more and get a quality product. Hammock gear econ quilts are excellent for the price. Yes, they are much more than a onetigris, but they're much better as well.

Another cheap option is an arrowhead equipment jarbidge, if you want something synthetic.

Protip: 99% of the hammock related stuff on amazon is cheap Chinese mass produced junk.

If you actually go anywhere cold you're going to have to cough up big bucks to buy a winter uq (and not a shitty amazon product) but this will work in the summer for texas no problemo.

Real talk though, even wrangling a pad, as much a bitch that is in a single layer, is still going to be better than those taco quilts.

I personally wouldn't suggest Eno or any of their clones to anyone for camping. Those a beach, backyard, and porch hangers, or for those who think a hammock is a couch and not a shelter system. Those cheap parachute hammocks work great for that, but there's a pretty huge step up in comfort when you start hanging in cottage vendor stuff (or get to the point you can DIY).

I totally get what you're saying as well. Right now all of my "camping" experiences are going to be on the casual side as I'm introducing my 4 year old to it and don't want to jump head first into hard core outdoors living just yet. Having said that, my last outing was about a month ago and it was just cold enough at night to make hammock (the cheap eno clone) sleeping untenable. So for the time being I just need that one piece of stop gag equipment to hold me off until the kiddo is old enough for more serious camping. At that point I plan on replacing everything with high quality gear.

Just went camping w/ hammock and ended up only using my z seat under my ass for insulation. The temperature dropped to 3c during the night and i didn't feel the cold at all.

So what am i missing? I used a -5 bag plus a wool blend based layer.

Are under quilts only good for winter? Has anyone tried my method?

I'm pretty sure one of the lightest setups you can run is using a Zpad + 3/4 underquilt as a bottom insulation. If you pick up a 30F premium 3/4 underquilt you're looking at about 14oz for the quilt and it's suspension combined.

With a 3/4 underquilt you generally use an extra little foam pad to stick under your feet, since they won't be protected by the quilt. I like the full length so I dont have to deal with extra bits. I dunno much about temperature ratings though.

UQ temp ratings work the same as sleeping bags; purchase one with the lowest temp it gets to in your area. If you sleep hot you can get away with less insulation if you're a cold sleeper you'll need more

Im building a DIY sleeping pad from EVA foam a 210cm x 110cm x 20mm 30kg/m3 block for 35. €. As I need a grounddweller Option i cant use a quillt. I should have atleast a rvalue of 3. Uncompressed even more (some stores claim even more then 5 rvalue but i dont belive that )

Im cutting it to shape at the Moment. Still lots of extra Material to cut after more testing.
900g atm nice and wide for my broad shoulders and long for my 190cm. Very nice feel on the skinn wraps up on both sides and form a nice cocoon with the down quillt. Hope to low er volumen and weight by maybe 30%in the final shape

the plan is to melt in groves to make it fold up like the Thermarest Z-lite in a Zig-zag pattern. (it's the same material after all, just waffle-ironed into the egg carton shape)
For this you can use a hotblade or a soldering iron with a broad tip on a guide rail to maintain a uniform depth and stay strait.

i just have to decide on the form factor, if square like the z lite or flat like the german army pad. not sure yet if i want a flatter backpack wide thing with less folds or the more flexible square size.

Hohoho YES! Mads, I cannot support this decision enough. I'd had all that stuff (minus the sleeve) for about 5 years, and my /out/ life has gotten so much better because of it.

You'll have no regrets, friend. Expect a bit of a learning curve though, in terms of how you like to hang the hammock and quilt, etc. Takes a bit of practice to get it just right, but sounds like you've got everything you need to be comfy.

i think it was because the old stuff was just a canvas meant to wick water away? new stuff is fine nylon with silicone impregnation that repels water on the sourface i think.

never been a fan of hanging it on the tree, its rarely covered by the tarp and even if the raincover is on the bag water will run down the trunk of the tree and soak it

Oh boy here we go, had a few tries setting it up and taking it down in my garden, man, the spread mosquito net is a godsend, no more net flopping in my face, the sleeve makes set up and take down a breeze

Replacing the original webbing with the woopie slings was a faff and a half though, glad I only gotta do that once

Hopefully gotta take the kit to Sweden this coming weekend to try it out while /out/

Also how does the mosquito netting hang? Does it attach directly to the hammock or does it envelope the whole thing?

Also also, I'll be interested in hearing how the test works. In particular if the mosquito netting acts as a thermal/wind barrier. That's a small concern I have for mine is that in the warmer months it might make me a bit too warm when trying to sleep.

I've been camping with a tent so far, but it burned down last year and I'm thinking about getting a hammock now and I've got a couple of questions:
1. where do you store the clothes that you've worn over the day? Do you put them into your backpack, the hammock or do you hang them under the tarp?

it takes up about the same room if not more then my old hammock set, however, in summer if i can forgo my sleeping bag and jsut go with the underblanket then its a major space saver, but mostly its WEIGHT saver, the DD tarps bigger and lighter then my old nordpol tarp, compression seems about as good as you would expect.
the spreader bars are tied back to the carabiners with elastics, whick means that you get a kind of rectangle shaped space inside the hammock, nice and lofty, it is attached to the hammock, but theres zippers on both sides so you can zip it up, roll it up and then its out of the way.
the very slight breeze we had today had no problems passing through the net,
man, as soon as you put the underblanket goes on temp goes way up, granted, this was at high sun during the day.
i´ll make sure to snap some pics this weekend of how the net connects and stuff

only thing i didnet try out today was flying the tarp just because i didnt have anything higher then where i attached the hammock, and come on, its a tarp, not really much to figure out and i forgot to try and put my sleeping pad into the doubled layered bottom

didn't do much as there wasn't that great weather and i like to work in the forest with a real set up.

but i cut down the shape a bit more, less foam at the legs. only left a bump (yellow arrow) for the knee for when i like to angle one leg up. might cut away more around the head area as there is some 5cm extra but im gonna test it first with a night of sleep once i get some colder temperatures.

same with the wave in the red area it does not really make a difference in comfort, but i might be able to save a few grams.

i did some tests cuts on the foam leftovers to see how to best make the z lite style folding mechanism. it does lose a quite a bit of strength but there seem to be little wear on the material if one does not abuse it. it won't last decades but still pretty good. maybe i can reinforce it with stuff like fiber tape if necessary. additionally im making a cardboard cut out i test folding patterns/geometry. though to be honest i'm not sure if it even makes sense, its very easy to roll up and it's not going to get that much more compact.

it's now at 800g and a tube around 90-100 cm tall and 22 cm across rolled up. tied on the back of my pack i can't really feel the weight but i can feel the wind if its strong which is kinda funny. if i cut the shoulder area more it will get maybe 6-8 cm shorter as that is the widest part.

This looks really cool. Like a custom fit deal, kinda like how you can get custom orthotics for your shoes. I can't wait to see how it does. Also if making cuts to fold it sacrifices strength then you may want to skip it.

not really man, it's trial and error. the idea is to identify the pressure points (where you'll compress against the underquilt). shoulders, hips, butt, calves, etc can all be pressure points. it depends on how you hang your hammock and your particular body. i feel like it just comes down to experience. you spend one or two frigid nights and you'll know where you need more slack.

I suppose I would have to pack something like that. I think I'm kind of looking for a thing that takes up about as much space as that or less when I bundle it into a pack. Yes, I just used one of those a couple weeks ago on a motorcycle trip to Utah where I didn't want to pay for a hotel. Used some cheap inflatable sleeping mat, a thin US Army patrol sleeping bag, then a Snugpak jungle blanket on top of me for extra warmth that I didn't even use until morning time.
For the money I think it's an extreme value. Will try to find a pic on my phone and post.

Not offhand, but there’s no harm in just practicing. Easiest for me was to keep the hammock in a waterproof sleeve. Just set up tarp, tree straps, then clip off the ends of the hammock and push back the sleeves.

Thinking about getting a DD SuperLight Hammock + DD SuperLight Tarp + DD Hammock SuperLight Mosquito Net. I don't have a tarp but i do have cheap hammock that comes with a mosquito net from earlier but it feels like it's badly sown or planned because I cant find a way to be comfy in it. the superligth hammock looks neat and you cant complain about the weight, having it in ripstop seems like a good idea, the tarp is still 3x3 right? hmm. that mosquito net looks like a bit of a faff, dont really like that its not sealed, but that can just be me not understanding the system from the intro video DD has on it, and i would asume you get some serious wear issues with the way your supposed to drag it along the cord if you want it off, also, nothing really to spread it out, guess you could guy it to the tarp.
i would recommend the sleeve too, makes setup and take down so much easier.
your stability issues may be more with how you lay in the hammock or how you but it up? 30 degrees seems to be the rule of thumb.
also if the DD ultralight comes with the same shittier pegs as my 3x3 did, get new pegs

This made me thick though, if a tent catastrophically fails, then your fucked, if a hammock fails your tarp will most likely be intact, so you can just take out your pad, use your underblanket as a sleeping bag and still have the tarp for shelter .. are hammocks.. dare I say it .. more fail proof?

You do not need a whoopie sling but it would replace the carabiner.

You can attach the carabiner directly to the hammock assuming you have a gathered-end hammock.

Dutchware has 5' huggers for under $10.

You can get away with it, I slept in an off-brand ~9ft open hammock for years before I got my first proper camping hammock, but I wouldn't recommend it. Most of them are overpriced (here's looking at you, ENO / Grand Trunk) and pretty low quality, not to mention less comfortable. Get yourself a Dutchware netless or the netless from Warbonnet. If you're up to spend a little extra, getting one with a net (chameleon / WB XLC / DH Sparrow) would last you years.

That's up to you, but don't cheap out on it. Any of the cottage vendors will do you great - I have a HammockGear 10F Incubator, others to check out are Jacks R Better, UnderGround Quilts (UGQ), Loco Libre... You really can't go wrong with any of those.

Yes, you will need both if you're sleeping below 50F in my opinion. Most hammock campers get a top quilt (same cottage vendors) to save space, weight, and cut out the uneeded bottom side.

I think Warbonnet has the best tarps around, they've got a great range with the Mambajama to the Superfly and the other new "---"fly tarps. I used to have a Hennesy asym backpacker, but since I switch the the Superfly I'll never get anything else.
I should point out, when it comes to tarps there is a HUGE step up you can take when you switch from a silpoly/nylon to Cuben fiber. The price jump is rough but cuben fiber is incredibly light weight, and looks pretty cool too - HammockGear has dope cuben tarps but anticipate spending $300-500 on one.

It would be hot and stuffy and the top part would likely use poles, adding weight and impairing some of the hammock's key attributes- versatility and weight.

Plus, you would still want a rain tarp to cover your gear, unless you put everything in your pack with a cover overnight which seems like a bit of a pain for cooking gear. A separate tarp is just a better setup overall, especially given the availability of very lightweight tarps.

Was on my way home yesterday from a 2 night trip where I camped out in front country. Started on my way home and in 20 minutes I had a flat that went down fast. Spare on I made my way to the closest campground. I'm very happy to say with my gear I was comfortable at 36F, I have never taken it this cold camping before. Depends how common bugs are where you camp. I personally would put a net on. You would have to make a ridge line and get out your sewing kit, I would velcrow over zipper, would be easier. I dont have experience myself with doing this though, my hammock came with one

I have a DD frontline hammock. I only used it twice or thrice, but the quality is great for the price. It is smallish, really lightweight and the bag that it comes in, is bigger than the hammock rolled up shoddily, so it's easy to pack. Only real problem is the synthetic rope that it came with. Regular use created enough friction to degrade the rope, so I replaced it,
I am gonna be camping with it soon in Northumberland, but it should hold together for a week.

I assume you mean how do I run them so the tarp covers the hammock while I asym lay? It's a pretty big hex tarp so there's no issue really. The gathered ends still fall well within the boundaries. Just normal tie offs on the 4 non tree tied guy lines.

Has anyone ever hammocked with a dog?

Have a 50 pound sheepdog I backpack with, it's too cold for him to sleep on the ground. I'm thinking if I get a double he can cuddle up in the hammock w/ me.

I would make very sure that his claws are filed because if a hommock is poked it tends to rip, perhaps some ekstra could be done, like a ground sheet but for inside the hammock, you should probably my test if he is even willing to get in the hammock, does your hammock have a bugnet?

Take a look at Dutchware. Very light hammocks that aren't super short (if you're over 5'9" good luck sleeping comfy in a 9' hammock), good options for bug nets, good/cheap suspensions, and very good and affordable tarps.

I'm currently using a single-thickness Dutchware netless 11' with 5ft UHMWPE/poly huggers and a DIY'd whoopie sling and structural ridgeline. I also have a 12' asym tarp from them. Whole setup ran me around $180 and weighs under 800g/28oz including 8 aluminum stakes.
