Not a meme. Always hike in sandals we don't have winter. Chacos area awkward and run narrow. Try a few miles in Tevas and then only wear them incamp and for stream crossings.

Former /out/fitter and guide here. While I don't personally find chacos comfortable (too narrow and too much arch for me) I do appreciate that they can be resoled & rewebbed so they have a very long lifespan compared to a lot of other sandals & water shoes

They're honestly pretty nice. I usually wear boots often, so it's nice to mix it up and let my feet have some breath of air in the warmer seasons. Even then, I'd only wear if I were doing chores around the house or running errands. They're surprisingly comfy to run in, but I can't say I've taken them out on an actual run. The occasional caprice of running while outside is enjoyable in these.

Have hiked up to 3700m in my Teva sandals, hiked in the Romanian Carpathians as well. Quite feasible and comfy.

Would not recommend crossing snowfields though.

I like mine, though I have weird big toes so the toe strap is a bit awkward there.

I went backpacking in Utah wearing Chacos and loved it. I find my feet heat up easily so I tend to get blisters when I wear boots. Chaos helped immensely with that.

I need to say though that I have the chacos with the cushion layer on them. Makes a world of difference as the default chacos can be a bit rough at first and makes going long distances a breeze on the feet.

If you're hiking in footwear, you're already a soft yuppie faggot. Hike barefoot, get those feet toughened up, and go native for long hikes. You'll find that the areas you miss shoes are all areas where people are - scalding parking lots, gross tile bathrooms, broken glass on day trails or roadside.
