Most of the fishermen I see PERIOD are males 60+. This is mainly because I fish on weekdays (due to everywhere I fish being inundated with children or drunk fucks on weekends) so the majority of other fishermen are retirees.

They cost $1 a pack & you dont have to tie them yourself..
droppers are how they used to make them before they were mass produced. gangions are what they were called back in the day.
easy way to make them with light line like a sabiki rig is to tie successive dropper loops and cut each one of the branches of loops and then tie on your feathered hook to each of the single lines.

But then again I can go out to my farm pond and shoot at turtles with a .22 pistol and the bluegill will literally beach themselves trying to eat the shinies (empty .22 brass) falling in the water. So that's a pretty low bar to set.

I caught two bass in a literal puddle, it was two-three inches deep and there was just a tiny bit open to the pond. I love early bass season. Here's a purty gil who took the plastic. A tiny crayfish plastic on a tiny ice fishing jig slayed them.

Be careful mixing the soft baits like that. Colors will leech into eachother so a white grub next to a green worm might turn into a green grub. And different types of plastics can have some crazy reaction and they melt and turn into a sticky mess and could ruin a bunch of lures and baits.

With soft baits it’s best to keep each type in their own bag. I always keep everything in the bags they come in.

Well, that's fucking annoying. Meh, I'm not gonna carry a fuckheug tackle box. This little guy is all I want. I'll make sure the rest are stored properly, so if I loose three or four worms it's not the end of the world

The worst is when you mix different types or plastic, sometimes a worm made of softer elastic plastic next to a different brand that is harder will have some reaction and ruin everything. I have had spinnerbait skits melt when being next to a plastic worm. And it’s really difficult to clean off and will ruin everything around it. Have fun throwing out those whopper ploppers when they’re covered in gooey shit that won’t come off.

Sure.

The rod probably has the line rating printed on it. M is normally like 6lb-12lb mono. Beyond that you just gotta find the line weight in that range that works best for the fish you’re catching and the weight of bait you’re casting.

Why a pawn shop? Whenever I see fishing stuff in pawn shops, it’s either cheap Walmart crap or really old stuff that was nice when Grandpa bought it 30 years ago.

The Walmart crap sells for $10 less than if you were to buy it new, and the Shimano reels that were top notch in the 80s are selling for like 80% of what it would cost to buy the brand new model.

Those soft plastics are fine, they don’t need to be put in bags, as long as they are with the same type of plastic, as you already have, you won’t have an issue. If you leave it out in the sun you might, but that’s with any soft plastics

Most rods have a rating right on the rod that will tell you what range of lines is appropriate. My 7’6” medium spinning rod is rated for 8-12lb line so I can’t imagine yours being too far off despite the added length

Yeah, have definitely reached max capacity on this little box. The only other thing I'm adding immediately, though, is some more squirrel tail worms in a different color, so they should be able to tuck in with the pumpkin ones. And good call on those little swimmers, I'll find a new home for them.

Its a two sided box and the ploppers aren't on the side with the worms, so even if they all melt down the biggest losses will only be my Mini-Kings and rooster tails, and those are a lot cheaper to replace than the ploppers.

Would you guys use 1/4oz or 1/8 oz for browns/rainbows?

For lures, is it about the hook size or the rod and line you have? Say you've got a heavier rod but are hitting fish with smaller mouths, would I want to just go heavier on the lure and replace the hook?

Me too. I have one and I've been using it. It's only like a cm and a half long. Even big fish went for it. I would tell you where I got it, but at my family cabin theres a huge box of plastics and it was in there. When I scuttle it it looks so realistic. The biggest northern pike I ever lost was on a jig like that but all black, nothing else. Steelhead fisherman catch fish with plain marabou jigs. Basically all fly fisherman use a lighter version of those.

Any small, dominantly green sunfish with a stout body and dark mark on its gill flap, I call a bluegill.

Whether I'm catching bluegills, redears, warmouths, pumpkinseed, or rock bass, I normally don't have the foggiest idea.

You have to be careful keeping them near spinnerbaits and stuff too because the skirts on spinnerbaits next to the soft baits will have the same reaction.

And even if they’re similar plastics and won’t melt, the colors will still leech. If you keep white worms and dark blue worms next to eachother, the white worms will eventually turn blue. It’s best to keep them in the original packages.

Not huge, but goddamn is it annoying when the guides don’t line up. I strongly prefer 1pc rods. Plus there are those rare times where your friend is trying to land a fish and the top piece falls out and slides down the line since it wasn’t tight enough.

Walmart has these bins full of little Yum bags and there is some panfish stuff in there sometimes, but even the ones in this pic are like 2”. Those puddle jumper things are cool but that’s one of the very few small things I could find.

The problem is that mayans and bluegill can still bite the ~2” baits but when they’re picky they won’t go for them and are really looking for small bugs and nymph type stuff and I’m not about to go buy a fly rod for them.

Go 1/8 oz at the heaviest if you’re creek fishing. If you’re using a “heavier” rod like a M/F bass rod, buy a new rod because it’ll be too strong for small hooks. Usually with small trout lures, they come with appropriately sized hooks. Also, never use split shots because they will crimp your line and mess it up

They’re cheap so I grabbed them a few months back, but the 1” Berkley ones look much more appealing.

These tiny grubs are still one of my favorites for panfish. I have some super small jigheads, I think they’re 1/64oz? Like the same thing the Mini Mites come on. Those work well with the tiny Gulps.

I had that one, It went 8 feet down at most because the properties of saltwater makes it more buoyant. Zoom flukes are actually my standard but the fish I go after are "soft biters" and it's hard to get them hooked with only one hook. Still a great bait though, I lost one the other month because a fucking duck dove down and hooked itself in the bill because it thought it was a real fish. Countdowns are too slow and would probably get pulled up by the strong waves

Berkley Lightning Rod has been great to me for $40. Only thing is the reel seat doesn’t feel the most secure but the rod is so great feeling for $40 that I’ll take a less than perfect seat design. But there’s a new model out now so maybe they changed it.

Because if the Trion 40 is the same size as the President range, it’s big for 4lb-6lb line. I think you’re better off going with a slightly smaller reel (30 or smaller) on a ML rod or slower action M rod with the 4lb-6lb line and keep the 40 on the old heavier rod with 10lb-12lb line for bigger fish. If you’re already spending $60 on an Eagle rod, you could find a combo for $20 more and get a reel at least as nice as the Trion.

It’s different types of fishing. Predators like bass don’t really care about the taste when hunting, they are going after the movement and vibrations and then you typically hook them as soon as they bite.

Fish will hold onto live bait longer than a plastic lure, but you’re supposed to set the hook on a lure as soon as they bite it. Trying to put live bait on lures is going to mess up the action anyway.

Typically yes. Especially something like a Rapala or Rooster Tail or anything small enough for them to grab in one bite. Otherwise they will spit it out or possibly swallow the hook which sucks for catch & release.

It’s different if you’re fishing some soft plastics. Like an 8” long Texas rigged worm on the bottom, you want to give the fish a second or two to get the whole bait in its mouth before setting the hook because they grab the tail first. But your little hard plastic minnow baits and stuff, you can set the hook as soon as they bite.

Weights are often used with live bait or cut bait or whatever non-artificial bait where you just cast it out and wait for the fish to bite.

But for artificial baits where you are actively casting and reeling to create the action, the lures are already weighted to achieve the desired effect so you shouldn’t add extra weight.

The exception is when you’re fishing soft plastics like artificial worms or minnows. These are designed so you add your own hook and weight in a number of different ways to achieve the desired action and effect. If it’s the same anon as the last thread fishing for trout, he was looking at a L or ML rod and I suggested going with a new reel too. He could find a lighter rod he likes and spend $20 more to get the combo with an appropriate sized reel. And then anon could leave the 40 on the heavier rod with some 12lb line if he decides he wants to throw some heavy bass baits into weeds or go for carp one day.

He’s new though so I wouldn’t suggest spending money on a St Croix until he knows what he likes. Especially if he’s going to put a Size 40 Trion reel on there and target small trout, it will be balanced all crazy.

Whatever you find easier. I typically do a mono backing and never had issues. Just make sure you tie your knots right and spool it tight.

Lots of reels have the rubber strip on them now too so you can tie braid straight to the spool.

maybe not though, maybe it wasnt meant to be. i foul hooked him on 12 lb test, i'm probably lucky i got to see him at all.
i have a few ideas of my own but i am curious as to how you guys would go about targeting a giant snapping turtle.
current plan is entire beef heart on a hook as big as my hand on steel leader.

Easier said than done. All the creeks are flooded with walleye fags and trout fags. northern trout streams are still under a few feet of snow. Lake has a million boats on it because walleye season just started. Even the ponds are too cold to produce a decent bite. In a month they will all be gone though which is nice to think about.

I was planning on getting an entirely new light rod/reel combo for smaller stuff, that's what I'd run 4-6lb mono on. There was that 6'6" micro lite pfleuger president combo that caught my eye with a size 25 reel.

Ok that sounds like a much better plan. You could even go MH if you want on the Trion. Rod strengths kinda vary between models, but I think the Trion 40 with 10lb-12lb line on a MH in any action or a M with Fast or Xtra-Fast action would work well.

That way you will be covered for most freshwater stuff aside from giant blue cats. The L or ML would be good for panfish up to 2lb-3lb bass, and the MH for 3lb+ bass, fishing in weeds, carp, channel cars, etc.

And I agree with anon who said running a 4lb leader on 6lb main line is useless. Forget about the leader. Just do straight 6lb mono unless you are going for gar or something with sharp teet and then you would want heavier flouro or something, not lighter line.

But everything you got picked out seems like a good plan. Go to Bass Pro and see what you like whe you actually have it in your hand.

the jerkbaits i've seen, whether sinking, floating, or suspending, have an X' to Y' depth rating. so if i let a sinking jerkbait pause, it'll not sink deeper than its depth rating? likewise a floating jerkbait will not dive deeper than its depth rating?

It's expensive and not as much fun using live worms. You'll catch more fish but you'll have to rebait every 20 seconds because bluegill fuck it up. Big crayfish and minnows are the only live bait I'll use in bluegill/bass ponds. That being said, in places where the fish you want is the fish that's down there, live bait will always beat out artificals.

However, the best and most simplest way that you can control the depth of your lure is to raise or lower the tip of your rod during the jerk as you can't control water density/tempt and changing line diameter is not practical. Raise your rod tip high if you want the lure go up and lower it near the water if you want it to dive. Some people even put the rod tip into the water to force a lure to dive slightly deeper sometimes. For example, for a 2'-4' lure, raising your rod tip all the way up will bring your lure to the depth of around 2' and lowering it near the surface will run it at the depth of 4'. Remember that as the lure get closer to you during the retrieve, it will gradually go slightly higher an higher, especially when it is really close to you as the angle of the line deviates significantly and pull the lure upward more as it heads toward your rod tip.
For floating lure, the lure will float up every time you stop retrieve and can float all the way to the surface. If you retrieve, the lip will force the lure to dive to w/e depth. Typically you would want to lower your rod tip down and jerk a few times to initiate a good dive after a cast.

Going to consolidate my rods/reels to one brand.

Should I go with all 13 Fishing stuff, or Duckett rods/Pflueger reels?

I don’t like having mismatched brands (i.e. an Abu reel and Lew’s rod, the Duckett/Pflueger is okay since Pflueger doesn’t make rods nor does Duckett really make reels). Strictly one of these two options. I don’t have experience with centrifugal brakes, but I’m not totally sold on Duckett’s reel seats. Which is the better bet?

Whether you need a well made spinning reel or not is dependent on you. If you’re a weekend warrior and you break the rods out made a dozen times a year then obviously that trion is all you’ll ever need. For those who are putting hours on water every week, having a lighter, stronger reel that can handle being used often is a lot more attractive and ultimately makes for a more effortless and enjoyable time fishing. Obviously the better built one will cost more but if you judge it by how often you’ll use it and how long it will last, its worth it.

Speed is set by the gear inside the body of the reel. So that’s not relevant to the quality of the reel.

As far as smoothness, yes, 100% you will be able to tell the difference. The level of balance and tolorance the higher end reels are built to is crazy.

the colour wasn't my choosing, i didn't want to have to go down stairs, grab my fly box, open it, pull out a cf baitfish, take a picture of it, go back up stairs, plug my phone in to my computer, and then move it to my computer so i could upload it, i just googled "craft fur baitfish" and took the first result, all the ones i have are either white/olive or pure white. as for the second point, while there are times realism matters, usually a realistic fly vs an impressionistic fly is not your biggest limiting factor, and with a streamer, impressionistic will almost always be good enough, and a hyper realistic minnow pattern will usually not move well. if you want hyperrealistic lures fling a $20+ swim bait, if you're fly fishing, accept that you're not going to have the most realistic pattern on the water, save some time at the vice, and spend it either getting better at casting or on the water.

I mention salt reels because if you’re fishing for fish big enough to scream drag, which in the ocean isn’t too hard to find, a well made reel is a necessity. A poorly made reel will expose how bad it is very quickly once it’s put under stress for any decent amount of time. Also the added corrosive element the saltwater poses. Shimano and Diawa will be the top two manufacturers producing really high end spinning reels. Granted they cost a fucking ass load, but if maintained will last your whole life and be nothing short of awesome use.

If you spend over $50 on a spinning reel, you will get something solid that will last for years as long as you don’t dunk it in saltwater daily without cleaning it. The more expensive spinning reels come with more exotic materials. Ceramic bearings that don’t get rekt by salt as fast, super fancy machined gears, light carbon composite frames. The weight makes a difference with balance and if you’re fishing all day, you will notice it.

Yesterday I got to clean out a car from the impound lot that we seized from some methhead a year or so ago and it had a bunch of fishing gear in it, including almost a full Plano tackle box filled with soft bait. His rod of choice? A fucking piece of moulding with line tied around the end. I wanted to take the bait home but unfortunately they all melted into one mass from sitting in the S.C. sun for a year. If you are using the reel frequently, you should be wiping down the reel and putting oil on the bearing every 2 weeks at least. Try to do that if it it doesn’t werk then you might have to take the reel apart.

yeah i've been fishing with it nearly every day for a few months and haven't done anything to it. it fell out of my kayak a few times as well. guess i'll have to take it apart and clean it. should i soak the bearings in brake cleaner and then oil them to flush them out or just leave them as is and put a couple drops of oil?

What tactics did you use and what was the environment where you were casting?

Jerking, steady reeling, reedy, shallow, etc?

I've never caught a bass, and while I don't expressly go for them I want to start experiencing more fish that fight me while at the same time staying near local lakes.

I dont know how to fish rivers or streams (or when) else I would do more of that. River jigging looks fun as fuck.

the creek isn't too wide, you can kind of see the other bank in the picture but this was a nice slow moving pool that's only about 5ft deep at most

i was throwing this little bumblebug lure across the shallows near the banks because i could see a shelf where the water dropped off, didn't do a whole lot of anything other than a steady slow retrieve because this lure wobbles across the top and only dives about 2ft at most

tossed it a little further than the shallows just before the center of the creek and caught that bass, i also caught a small mouth but he got off the hook before i could get a pic

caught about 4-5 of these little guys on it too, i was throwing a 1/4oz beetle spin for a while but the hook seemed too large for any smaller fish to get into their mouths so i gave up trying to use that, but they were biting the beetle spin like crazy, every couple seconds i could feel them tugging on the grub and was having a blast watching them follow it all the way to the bank trying to eat it

i saw a couple larger fish but couldn't tell what they were and they weren't going for my spinners or the bumblebug, gonna go back tomorrow early in the morning and try hitting it up again to see if i can't get anything big out of it

fish tend to prefer the shallows and cover? or was it more the slow pool where they can just rest?

it's a rebel june bug 7/64's weight with like size 12 or 14 hooks, not very good for distance casting but it gets far enough to reach the middle of the creek

it was on clearance at wal-mart for $2 but i think they go for $5-7 and they have a bumble bee, grasshopper and other stuff that wobbles on the surface and dives 2ft which is perfect for smaller places with lots of rocks and snaggy stuff, can't wait to see if it works on crappie at the lake too

just a slow pool i think but my friend told me if they aren't biting in the middle toss to the shallows and that worked out pretty well for today, i'm still learning a lot about fishing but it's so much fun and really helping with my depression

Line is pretty simple- the lighter the line, the further you can cast. The lighter the lure, the shorter the cast. So if you’re running light lures, you want to try and figure out the lightest line you can use that won’t break when reeling in the fish you’re targeting.

For rods, you also want to find a weight that will handle the fish you’re targeting. But you need to find a weight and action that will cast the size of lure you’re using well. The flexibilty of the rod gives it a slingshot or catapult effect where it is preloaded at the beginning of a cast and springs forward at the end when you let go of the line and helps to launch the bait. If the rod is too heavy for a given bait, it won’t flex enough during the cast and will barely give you any extra propulsion. If the rod is too light or action too slow for that lure weight, it won’t have enough power to spring back fast enough and give it that extra kick.

Think about lunch time in 4th grade when you have plastic spoons and you’re using it to flick stuff across the cafeteria. If the spoon is too flimsy, it will fail to launch a marble very far but it will send an M&M all the way to the nerdy girl’s table. If you get a heavy metal spoon, it will fling the M&M pretty far, but put that heavier marble in there and it becomes deadly.

It’s not just with lures. A medium weight rod might cast a bobber and 1/4oz split shot, but then if you want to fish in strong current with a 2oz sinker, that M rod is just going to flop around when you cast it.

You want it to have that proper spring rate where the rod flexes backwards a bit as you start the cast and then when you get towards the end of the casting motion the tip of the rod will be springing forward to give you extra speed and distance. Not enough weight and the rod will barely flex backwards at the start of the cast. Too much weight and the rod tip won’t spring forward fast enough.

The Gulp curly tail minnows are great for everything too. I have landed some nice bass on the chartruese curly tail mullets in the larger saltwater sizes. Throw them on a jighead, a swimming jig, underspin, spinner bait, anything and the bass slam them and won’t let go. Have gotten sneks on the curly tail minnors too.
