Since I don't know all the proper english terms, I'll give the german names as well.
A short machete (Haumesser) is better and more versatile than an axe on a hike or for SHTF, and heavy machetes (Hippe) and billhooks (Gertel, Ziehgertel) are the best non-power tools for trimming hedges or cutting down trees below arm's thickness.
