I just bought an ENO hammock and I'm very happy with it. I'm going camping on a sandbar in a couple days and I'd like to use my new hammock. Problem is there are no trees. I do have a tent I could use but it's big and kind of a pain.

Does /out/ have any ideas about how I could jerry rig this thing up? My best idea is to cut down 2 smaller trees and bring the trunks with me. I think I could probably bury the bases far enough into the sand to be sturdy. Be creative.

burying poles is not gonna work, definately not in sand.
maybe possible with thick rebar but itd have to be really long and youd have to pound it deep into some solid earth with a heavy hammer.
if you dont have any solid things to work with, the next best thing are those contraptions you can put up on your lawn, might be possible to carry something like that around if its modular.

well if you dig deep enough, sure
but it would definately be more cumbersome than setting up any tent or just sleeping on the ground under a tarp.
the tarp you can just rig up with a few thin sticks stuffed into the sand.

One thing you could do is have everyone take a hammock and drive lighter poles not so far into the ground, then put the hammocks end to end in a polygon. This will only work if you all get in them at the same time and all weigh roughly the same.

the vectors don't work, at least not in my head. in order for your idea to work the weights would have to be even and exactly (or very close to) 180 degrees apart, any polygon wouldn't work unless you have an force pulling outwards.

I don't think it would take much of an anchor. Op could also get some dog tie cork screws and pic related.

Sand + dog tieout screws = fail.

Dig down a couple feet w/ a rock or log and make some deadman anchors in a V to each end to provide tension on whatever poles you use to suspend it.

or, realize that a hammock is awesome but you need to tent when the terrain doesn't support suspending it.

Ok, you're on the right track, this sort of thing IS do-able, but you don't do a single vertical with tieoffs... You want four poles, two tie offs...you cross two polls near the top, tie them together with the tie off, anchor the tie off.

(sand bag filled with sand burred a foot or so down is best for your implementation)

Two of that setup with the hammock between.
