Are these worth it?

I'm new to /out/ and only brought 800ml for a day trip which clearly wasn't enough

How do you bring water and how do you know how much you need?

It makes a yuge difference if you prehydrate as well. I normally drink a litre or two before I even go out for a hike or mountainbike, and I find I need much less water for those first few hours. Do have to pee a bit though.

I've been using a 1,5L aluminum bottle for a number of trips now and honestly I will probably shift towards a plastic one. It keeps falling from the side pockets and hit me on the legs every time I jump or cross a more rough path, to a point that I have to tie it to the compression straps.
It also starts to show lots of damage. Maybe stainless is better for that purpose but I can't see it being better when falls and hits you on the shin.

I go with a bladder and a 1L (plastic) bottle. Bladder is usually a 2L, but for longer hikes or on hotter days I'll bring a 3L. The bottle is mostly for utility.

The equation for /out/ activities is a little more complex, it's:

>half your body weight in ounces X the length of the trail X the amount of ascent X the slope of ascent X the distance you plan on covering per hour X your pack weight X the temperature X the humidity X the cloud cover ÷ the maximum distance between water sources you can resupply at

Knowing how much water you should bring for a trip is an entirely personal thing. Go on a few trips while carrying much more water than you need, observe the color of your piss throughout the day to ensure you're never dehydrated, than at the end of the day look at your bottles and see how much you drunk and how much was pointless weight.

After a few times doing that, TA-DA, you now know how much water you should bring on a trip.

Prehydrating makes a real difference for me. I typically drink over a gallon a day already. Kayaking in sea during summer, you probably sweat most of your water out so you don't urinate that often. I picked one of these up because rigid bottles get in the way. I can throw this thing in a canvas bag and not worry about it.

Although I should add that if you're talking about plastic bottles, emptied-out soda bottles refilled with water work much better than water bottles. The soda companies tend to use thicker plastic which = more durable.

Yes. Apple users have to be told how to chew, breathe, and drink now to be functioning adults. Phone apps have to disable themselves around bodies of water and train tracks so users don't walk directly into them searching for magic animals and cause accidents. Maps that tell people to turn at inopportune moments have caused morons to drive off bridges. These are the same people that are conditioned to have panic attacks when a pocket knife materializes. I like the water bags, they roll up so you can store them anywhere. If I actually cooked with them I would get a surplus canteen set instead.

They're pretty cheap, lightweight, filters screw directly onto the top of them (no need to stop and squeeze water through a filter), and have a slim enough shape that two fit into the side pockets of most backpacks.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me, no need to go and buy a $25 bottle like OP posted.

At all 3 supermarkets near me I can buy .25 liters, .5 liters, .75 liters, 1 liter, 1.5 liters, 1.75 liters and 2 liters, all from different brands, in either individual or six packs.

Depends on where you go and for how long, I just got back from a 9 mile hike and I drank about 20oz driving there, 50 on the hike, and another 40 on the way home. It was a mostly forested trail and 75-85°F today. Always pre drink and bring 2L for a day hike I would say, you can adjust from there depending on climate and access to other water sources.

It's one of my best purchases but not for the reason you want it.

For actual hydration on long hikes, go for a camelbak. Kleen Kanteens don't hold enough water for that.

They are however incredible at keeping things cold or hot for ages. I've managed to keep tea/coffee hot for 12 hours and conversely kept iced coffee cold with the ice cubes in tact for just under 12 hours in the middle of the summer.

I once took it in my gym's sauna with cold water in it for a full 30 min session and while the outside was scorching hot, the inside was completely unchanged.

a metal canteen is good because as others have mentioned, you can boil water in it depending - however it wouldnt be my primary means, although it is nice. metal is also good if you get a double walled cus it'll keep the contents liquid form longer in sub zero temperatures (such as that, in the arctic you NEED a thermos) however. they are susceptible to damage from being dropped. they dent very easily in my experience at which point the insulating factor is null. theyre also noisy.

But then I took them along on a camping trip where it was 20 degrees outside. Also brought evan williams and cans of coke. It was so good.
