I've moved around a lot but I'm still looking for that perfect place to call home. I've narrowed it down to at least a somewhat specific wants/don't wants list to progress with my search and visits. Where should I go next? *Sorry for ADD writing style* THE LIST: I want to be in close proximity to prime /out/ adventures (hike, bike, snow, etc) BUT not in bumfuck. I'd like to be within distance to a night life (restaurants and bars, I don't mean clubs), some established shopping (BestBuy, REI, Target, a Mall). I love to /out/ but I also like to cozy up with my 4kUltra tv and have a weekend of twitch streams and gaming (I need that 100mbps+ speed) I love seasons, just not extreme on one side. Southern AZ has great warm weather, but it's hotter than the devil's asshole after Taco Bell and there's no variation other than the further shortening couple months of monsoons. Northern Idaho was gorgeous in the summer and Fall but the winters last 6 months and after 3-4 months it starts to wear on me, plus it rains like Seattle which is too often for me. I love the rain, just not all the effing time. The Midwest was my childhood. Amazing growing up in the middle of the woods hunting, ATV, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, camping all from our acreage in our back yard with no one close to us for miles. I remember it being fucking cold for a large part of the year though and the mosquitos alone are enough to prevent me from stepping foot back in those states. Pretty bumpkin too. I've lived in: Southern Arizona Northern Idaho Michigan Ohio Currently living in Southern California Visited in my Search: Boulder, Colorado - PROS- lots of good restaurants and breweries, university town with a lot of cute girls, established shopping. -CONS- Mainstream everything, feels like snooty California, expensive tl;dr Shout /out/ to the best state to live in

>>1274790 it's my first time living in cali, i've lived here for 2 months, i absolutely hate it. Colorado had a really bad snooty cali vibe and i really didnt like it, maybe that was just Boulder?
Also:
-looking for cities with less less than 500k
population, obviously
-a free state
-somewhere I can buy some property and not get gang raped by the cost

Whatever you do don't move to Maine. Really great state for /out/, I just don't want you fucking internet weirdos shitting up my state.

>>1274806 >maybe that was just Boulder? Boulder is definitely the worst in terms of pretentious douchebags. Guess why? Because it’s groundzero for California locusts—I mean migrants—that come here.
Denver and Ft. Collins are also bad in this regard. Really the entire Front Range is just coastal transplants jerking each other off.

Wyoming. There's no debate in my mind. Vast untouched wilderness areas, no state tax, few Californians (the ones who have moved in are ruining it already, particularly in Teton County), and both major interstates (I-80 and I-25) go through the most barren, windy, and ugly stretches of the state, keeping the population at bay. Real estate isn't cheap, though, as, unlike Tennessee, Kentucky, or Mississippi, people actually want to live here.

Southern California happens to be the very best part of the very best /out/ state to live in, so you can just stay right there!

OP you ever been to more central california? Fresno isn't horrible and is close to Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon parks, plus 2-3 hours to the coast. Fresno kinda sucks but you can get good internet and modern amenities while being close to /out/ stuff you're looking for...

I'm looking to relocate too, so I'm just going to hijack OP's thread: >Current NV; raised AZ >would ideally like to buy some wooded land and homestead >fish/hunt; forage, grow veg; raise bees, chickens, goats/sheep >prefer mild, non-humid climates with short and/or mild winters >wanna homeschool the little ones and own funs >at least a few hours from a major, fast-growing city; smaller towns/cities ok >near national parks and other great /out/ places bonus >am a little spooked by possible natural disasters, but can buck up and learn to deal I'm planning on a lower 48 roadtrip in the somewhat near future for the dual purposes of seeing the country and scoping out potential places to settle down/raise a family (may or may not make Alaska). Must-see places to check out for either purpose would be appreciated /out/.

>>1275344 Agreed, I live in Northern NH and its pretty awesome cause there's basically nobody in the north. Just a bunch of semi-ghost towns and abandoned lumber mills. The entire state is just one big ass forest too with the addition of mountains, which is nice. The winter is pretty brutal though so I would watch out for that. But otherwise, the only other cons I can think of are the hordes of Massholes that come up from Boston every summer to enjoy their private community rental homes on the lakes in central NH, and our pretty big problem with Heroine. But if driving a pickup everywhere you go and living in half-deserted forest towns is your thing then head on over to NH.

California would be the best /out/ state if it wasn't overpopulated. The geographical diversity is amazing. You can go from awesome deserts to snowy mountains to pristine coastlines in a single day. Oregon and Washington are good, too but the deserts in those states lack grandeur in comparison. Got to say the Midwest is underrated, even though I'd never call it the best. I'm stuck in the area for the time being and it has lots of subtle gems. Some of the most ancient mountains in the world are in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (look up Porcupine Mountains). Being so old the mountains are pretty eroded, but still quite nice. Around Ottawa, Illinois there are some absolutely amazing waterfalls. The massive sand dunes along Lake Michigan are pretty epic. The "driftless area" in Minnesota where the glaciers were kind enough not to bury everything have a fascinatingly hilly, primordial look.

North Carolina. The two largest cities are in the mountains and it puts you within 2 1/2 hours of almost every activity possible. Plenty of universities, breweries, food, and low cost of living (IT'S BECAUSE OF THE POVERTY). Cheap guns everywhere too. Californias tend to fit in well here provided they aren't turbo progressive douches. Then you need to move to Asheville or Chapel Hill.

OP here Thank you all for your recommendations and advice, it helps get other's opinions when trying to figure something like this out. Gonna check out Oregon this next week. It seems like a good all around medium for what I'm looking for. Close to ski mountain, easy access to being /out/ in general while also not being overwhelmed with other people trying to enjoy /out/, metro Portland still has less than 1 mil population, good weather variation, lots of water and lots of green. My list also includes: Colorado as a close second, just for /out/ alone Washington North Carolina Utah? Park city or similar Feel free to use this thread to ask your "best state for /out/' and "where should I move to" questions!

My vote is for Eastern Tennessee/North Georgia/North Carolina. Great hiking all along the Appalachians, and not too far from civilization (Knoxville, Atlanta). Cost of living isn't high, and weather is reasonable year-round.
