I just drink from mountain streams. Where I live (British Columbia) they're all clear good water and I've never gotten sick in all my years of hiking. However if I'm somewhere at a lower elevation with no clear streams or the water is stagnant I'll purify water using aquatabs

I very rarely need to purify water when /out/ but if I have to, its all about the Condy's Crystals (potassium permanganate). If water looks really suspect, I'll filter through cotton, boil and add Condy's, but I've only had to that twice in 15+ years.

I always carry a small vial in my kit, its so small that you'd be an idiot not to carry it. 1 vial will last you a lifetime as you only need a few grains to purify water and it doesn't affect the taste of the water like other purification methods. Also you can use more grains to create anti-septic and disinfectant, so its multi-purpose.

Boil. It’s always your safest option. You can boil and then use a filter for an extra layer of protection. Usually when I set up camp I’ll boil most of the water I need to fill my hydration bladder for the next day and sip that through my sawyer. Never an issue.

Filtering gets rid of protozoa, chlorine dioxide gets rid of viruses and bacteria, boiling gets rid of them all.

Let's not be fags here - our main consern is biological, not chemical. Most water is not contaminated.

I did a test 4 months ago - took some ice from an old, frozen pond, filteted it through a strainer, boiled it for 5+ minutes and made tea on it.
I was fine, no poisoning, no shits, though the water was greenish. I plan on testing coffe filters.

Most people aren't healthy enough to drink distilled water, are they? That would mean you're drinking pure H2O so no other minerals that your body might need. And you might end up drinking too much and making yourself sick that way. Then again, maybe it's fine as long as you're not drinking it distilled on a regular basis. I don't know.

The minerals in water are pretty insignificant. 1 gallon of water contain 10% of recommended sodium, 9% magnesium, 11% calcium, and that's pretty much it for hydrating salts. If you're that worried about it (you shouldn't be) you can always just consume a packet of electrolytes and be far better off than you would be drinking regular water.

I heard somewhere that the pink himalayan rock salt you can get is basically exactly the right stuff to add to distilled water to remineralise it, but I don't recall the ratio of X teaspoons salt to Y liters of water

as far as I read on the internet the water gets remineralised in the stomach, mixing with everything thats in there. Furthermore you would need to drink up to 17L to have a negative impact but by this amount, every water would be negative.

Just trowing in some minerals doesnt sound to bad though.

I can't believe no one here has spoken yet about using wood for filtering water.
Look for it, but a couples of centimeter wood filters as well as most profesional osmosis filters. The only catch is that you need 3 atm of presure to make it work.
My setup? Kamelback + 3m flexible thin pipe, is light as fuck and surprisingly usefull.
Cut a piece of a fresh branch of any kind of tree fill the bag with water amd attach the pipe, put the bag in a tree and let gravity work.
For extra safety you can always use UV for viruses. They usually dont work because of the dust in the water, but the filtered water is completelly clean.

with the introduction of so many pathogens into otherwise pristine areas, i fear those days are behind me though.
in a pinch, i would drink deep and worry later, than suffer from dehydration.

I hate tabs so fucking much.
Put them in my nalgene bottles and the nasty ass taste gets into the plastic and no matter how many years of washing out it always tastes and smells like bitter ass.
Bought a filter and it may not be the greatest, but it's a whole lot better than tablets.

Honestly the whole 'dangerous bacteria in water' thing is way overblown. Both me and my father have been hiking all our lives drinking from streams and only using tabs on stagnant or tea-coloured water and none of us have ever gotten sick.

Hell, once my dad unknowingly drank from a stream that ran directly through the stables of a ranch and he never got sick.

Even if I someday get sick from drinking from streams, I'll still drink unfiltered, as together me and my dad have 80 years of hiking experience, and getting sick once is not gonna change how we do it. Having to whip out a filter and spend 5 minutes squeezing water through it every time I want to drink as opposed to just dipping your bottle in the stream and going on your way is simply too much hassle for the miniature risk you're exposing yourself to.

Thats the whole point of water with "added electrolytes".
If you drink distilled water it will osmotically pull electrolytes from you. But you can do this on the budget with gatorade powder, or if you are a real jew, make your own blend of salt with extra potassium (half salt) and magnesium (himalayan pink salts)

Has this actually been proven to be true? Because it sounds contradictory at best when people say it. Your body absorbs water and stores it in your cells and to pull it from the body would almost seem as if it never actually did that at all and simply pulled from your body on the way through, which isn’t how any of that works. Most research I’ve seen that doesn’t make absurd claims or try to pitch a water purification system seem to show that while lacking in nutritional value that minerals are actually minuscule at best in in water, there’s no real adverse effects. Though, I could be wrong, I’ve just never believed those claims.
