Going to buy a cheap kayak this weekend and try to hit the water for the memorial holiday.

Gonna get a short wet suit, life jacket, etc.

Do you think it would be okay to just jump in the water and go for it, assuming I'm hugging pretty close to shore, or should I go get lessons or something.

I'll probably be on some quiet lakes in the Lost Sierras or closer to Nevada. Not trying any rivers any time soon

If you meant that figuratively you don't need wetsuit. If literally, you're doing it wrong.

Either way you don't need a life jacket unless you're a subhuman that lacks the ability to swim, in which case you probably should avoid it altogether.

Paddling is like swimming, without proper technique you will use 3x more energy than needed.
Find some youtube or something but the basics:
You paddle with your back, not your arms, these barelly hold the paddle. You hold yourself with your knees turn with your hips/back and the arms make a nice circle, the fist in front of your face at the top.
To go straight, the paddle goes next to the kayak, to turn, you lower the paddle and do it farther from the kayak (it may seem eviddent, but half of the retards out there dont know how to do it).
Unless you know what youre doing do break in order to turn, is a waste of energy.

Appart from that bring a fuckton of water, solar cream and polarized sunglases.

Get the kayak, PFD, and a pump or something to remove water, you may have to look at your local laws for kayaks on the water as far as equipment go, but those are the basics.
Don't bother with the wet suit, wear shorts, pants etc.
Kayaking is a lot easier than you think for just paddling around a lake and small rivers,
I will never want for another canoe, inflatable or aluminum boat again since I started kayaking.
The main thing is just to get out there and do it, perhaps get a skirt when you get better and the water is warmer to practice rolling and such which will get you ready for faster water.
Then you can get a helmet. If you fish, try fishing from your kayak, it's great.
Also, a small kayak anchor is useful for when you want to stop and kick your legs out over the edges and take it all in.

Odd priorities. You don't need the wetsuit if the water is over 60 degrees. Those lakes are tiny flatwaters anyway. Learn what a proper forward stroke is, then learn a few assist strokes so you can backpedal and turn. If you're going to be around rocks then a light helmet is advised for when you inevitably roll your kayak for the first time.
