Does this count as /out/?
I live an area of general low light pollution in the rockies.
I have a 6yr old and a new one on the way. What's something good and relatively cheap to look at planets in detail with my kiddos? Im a complete beginner.

Get a big old dobsonian. Cheap and simple to use. Something around 8" should give you plenty of cool shit to look at... Nebulas and planets and shit. Also clusters can be cool as hell.

Also a decent pair of binos for scanning the sky. 10x50 is pretty standard. The bigger the aperture the better, but they get heavy and hard to hold steady pretty fast.

said, dobs are cheap and a bino is essential. You can learn a lot with just 10x50 binos.
I have a pair of Nikon 7245s. Their not super premium, but great quality.

Had an 8'' dob hardly used it became too much of a hassle getting it out of the house even worse part is having to bring it back inside when you've spent half the night out.
Dob also aren't good for beginners I don't know why people in astronomy keep telling beginners to get a dob...
Go with a Celestron Powerseeker 80eq if he decides to stick with the hobby he can always buy a dob later such a waste of money $300+ for a big bulky telescope that is gonna possibly end up taking up space around the house.
Small refractor like a Celestron Powerseeker is good for starting out.
And it's light weight.
I started out using that Powerseeker even did imaging using it.
A dob on the other hand trying image is a pain.

Ohh the big issue with beginners using a dob is none of them are aware it needs to be collimated and if they're new to telescopes well that will be a problem a family not familiar with telescopes the mirrors get knocked out of alignment from being moved around chances are they will have a big problem when looking at stuff.
Dob isn't good for beginners..
Beginners should stick with a refractor and if decide to stick with hobby then maybe go with a dob take in mind an 8" dob weighs around 40-50lbs base weighs about 25-25 OTA possibly the same not something your kids can setup by themselves if your kids wanted to have the scope out.

True true. My first scope was a 80mm refractor with an alt-azimuth mount. They're easy to use, and if the hobby loses its luster, they're easy to sell.
