Found this scabbard and didn't have a knife to suit, got hold of an old bread knife, cut it down with a hacksaw and put it to the whetstone. Finished with this shape. I was going for the tanto look but it's not quite suited to it. I think it will get most use in the garden.

What do you guys think of the crkt hvas? It is part of the field strip line so no tools needed and easy breakdown. It's 4116 steel which is not bad i suppose. I thought it would be a good hunting knife cause it's stainless, easy to clean and has a high hollow grind.

The wood needs cleaning with warm water to remove all the shit, drying, then rub a little walnut oil into - it's drier than a nun's cunt.

I'd rather a Spyderco Endura 4, or the Byrd Cara Cara 2 if you want to go cheaper (its official Chinese copy) for a hunting knife.

Flat ground and in general a better shape for skinning and filleting.

I'm looking for a small (8 cm / 3" blade max) folding and locking knife to use for fine work, cooking mostly. The recon which I thought flawed and now an older model Hunting Knife.

What I like about them is that they perform very well, cut and are tough but they keep that traditional rustic look. However I expected something refined, not these crude badly finished things.

I dont even have to take pics, all these fucky things can be seen on multiple online pics, and nobody raises a word. Look for uneven grinds, unsharpened ricassos (or too sharpened, the edge is chewed up), uneven handle/tang surfaces, thickness behind the edge, fucky uneven sheaths, fucky uneven sheath borders, etc...

Winklers are a good idea and I still like them, easily in the 8/10 or 9/10 range, but not for 400$ holy shit. They should be 100-200$

A locking knife is safer, Britbong. Yes: There's not a whole lot of risk from a non-locking knife if it is used responsibly. But locking reduces the risk of an accidental fold even more. But you own locking knives, so I'm sure you now this. It's partly why the Opinel is so popular: The locking collar makes it safer to use.

How new I am to kukris/my dreadful skill with it compared to my axe not withstanding, I still feel that people should stop comparing kukris to axes, 10 chops each. The kukri does have some advantages in it being shorter sp your can better use it in certain situations and more knife like so you could potentionally leave you knife at home. But force/penetration in wood just makes in incomparable to an axe imo
(havnt tested on green wood so can't tell how it performs here)

Akso. Couldn't resist buying a new Mora, one of the older models, here compared to my classic 2. Should I remove it's paint? Also, surprisingly, it gas a 90' spine, so no need to file it down to work with Ferro rods

The point of the blade length is that the knife is made to be suitable for all kinds of tasks.
It was designed for military use, and is widely used in the Finnish military (people buy these themselves, I'd say about 60% of the draftees has one). It's really that good.

Any reason you're not using an angle grinder? a larger diameter cutting disk is a pretty nice tool for roughly shaping gutting hooks. Though of course, you need to keep water on the blade the whole time so it doesn't lose it's temper.

do not use any cooking oil (which will go rancid) on any knife....go to any drug or grocery store and get a bottle of mineral oil....walmart has a 16oz bottle for a whole $2

it is meant for treating constipation, so it is 100% food safe and will not go bad

to patina the knife, soak a paper towel with vinegar, wrap it around the blade, and put it in a bag for a few hours....take it out, wash it off, and it's done

after each cleaning, wipe the blade with a little bit of the mineral oil....just a few drops should do

when you sharpen it, assuming you are grinding the whole face of the scandi grind, you will have to re-patina it....just follow the original process

Hello frens, got this Puukko a month ago or so and it's developed this little dip where it must've chipped, it's blunt as fug there. Any idea on how to sharpen it back in to shape that doesn't involve buying a very coarse grit stone and shaving off all the steel on the bevel until it's even with the dip, don't know if I'm meant to hit it at an angle and go hard on it or what. I've only got my DC4 Fallkniven sharpener and a 1000 grit jap bench stone for keeping my shit in order.

These guys spend a lot of time in the woods, concealing stuff, making fires, tent sticks etc. which is the kind of work it was designed for.

While it's great for harsh work (even chopping small branches), it lacks the finesse of a shorter, thinner blade when whittling.

Get one if you spend a lot of time making stuff out of wood in the woods, but don't get one if you are mostly going to do whittling.

Got one (Glock 81, the one with the sawback). makes a fine knife for rough work like prying ivy of my fruittrees or splitting wood. The saw is useless outside of combat though, since the teeth are aligned the wrong way for actual sawing. And obviously, it's no carving knife. If you've got a mora, this'll do all those things the mora can't.

Pretty good, handle is rubber and can get kinda sticky. Nice to have 90degree spine, but you can do that with a file and 8 minutes. The rubber on mines started to kinda fall apart at the tip of the fingerguard, but I've had it for a few years so interesting to see how long before that escalates. Kind of a gimmick to have the fire steel and sharpener on the sheath but it has come in handy before. Nice being able to switch out the belt loop on the sheath. Overall, good knife, wouldn't necessarily recommend it over any other stainless mora

I honestly don't have any experience with Mora knives. If you want to do a lot of carving, this isn't the best choice. It does, however, do amazing for how thick the blade is. I can get very fine shavings when making feather sticks, I have made a netting needle with it (which my dog promptly chewed up) it's a surprisingly capable knife, solid as hell and the convex grind stays sharp and is easily maintained with a strop. It's a great knife but if you're after fine precision you'd get with the thinner Mora, I'd say get a Mora.

I've seen lots of people mention the Woodsman, I thought about getting one but I already have a Kabar Hunter that is basically the same thing

I have used a Bucklite folder, and for the time I used it is was sharp, but really cheap feeling

I also have and have seen other people mention the Spitfires...I really don't like the blade shape or the aluminum scales

There's a ton of milk thistle growing wild near here I want to start harvesting, but it's best to have a large blade to chop off the leaves from a bit of distance. Who makes a machete that's good and relatively cheap? Or some other similarly-sized blade.

I tried to make a puukko because I like how they look. It's not finished, I still need to oil the wood and clean it up.
The blade is a piece of an old hardened steel file.
The wood is Tasmanian Oak, it's actually a Eucalyptus.
And I made it Australiana themed by putting a penny on the back and using 3 half pennies for the hilt.

Basically over a few months it will just go off and not protect the blade.

Shepherd's axe (aka ciupaga, rąbanica, valaska, fokos, baltag, and a few other names) is basically a light axe with a long haft that doubles as a walking stick. Makes a lot easier to transport if, instead of carrying the damn thing, you can use it to make walking easier, especially in the mountains.

In Poland, Slovakia, and Chech Republic, they are mostly associated with highlanders (and highland robbers). Mostly used in traditional highlander dancing, and sold by the handful as souvenirs (at least in Zakopane) - mostly in cheap, all-wood, or otherwise non-functional versions, but you can buy forged, usable ones as well. Maybe not as fancy as the one I posted, but for a fraction of the price.

It doesn't have the chopping power of a full forester's axe, but it works just fine. Here's a vid from Simon on the shepherd's axe:
