I am in denver with two days off. Where can I can take a sportsmobile and find dispersed camping on a crazy weekend like this one?
Do not want to go more than an hour and a half away if possible.
Would love to find a vanlife type gathering.

For all you Denverfags, I'm moving to the area for grad school in August. If I like hiking, skiing, and shooting, should I look for apartments as far west as possible? If I could afford it, I'd rent a tiny dacha as far into the hills as I could reasonably commute.

Yeah, I've thought about Golden, and mate, given the prices, the housing stock is horrible. Almost better to live in Lakewood in a """luxury""" apartment than some crammed apartment. I won't even be in CO right until school starts, so I don't expect it to be easy to try and rent a place over the phone.

I've got a Wrangler, and I'm half tempted to just get a hard-top and live out of it for a few months. I don't know how difficult it would be to commute to Golden from the hills (like Idaho Springs) if there are dispersed campsites I can car-camp in.

Not OP, but it all depends on what your preferred /out/ activities and environments are. In terms of sheer untouched wilderness nothing beats Alaska, but that can also be a disadvantage. The state is god-damned huge so if you're in Fairbanks and you want to rock climbing in Skagway or halibut fishing in Seward that's like a 4 day weekend. Utah is great for skiing, climbing, canyoneering, biking, etc. Washington IMO is the best "all around" state because the climate is fairly mild, there's multiple environments plus easy ocean access.

The big downside of having the mountains so close to the city is all the smog gets trapped, we have some of the worst air quality in the country
