Is anyone else terrified of these fuckers? I really want to get back outdoors and hike, and camp like when I was kid, but seeing how small these little shits are and all the shit they can give you scares the fuck out of me.

I wonder if these things just avoid children or something? Because when I was a kid I would get on the ground rolling around in grass and never got one, got my first one when I was 16 and ever since then if I so much as WALK in tall grass they're upon me. I mean I know kids who've had ticks but I know a lot more people who claim ticks didn't bother them as a kid either

Never even really thought about or saw them until last month, when after going through some really thick brush and bushes I realized maybe I should start looking out for them. The next trip to the same spot I took some basic precautions and tucked my pants into my socks, wore long sleeves etc. On that trip I had to flick off at least a dozen of the little fucks. Quickly bought some permethrin coated clothing and on my next trip only had to flick off one.

I feel like they only start attacking you once you start to worry about them, seems to be my experience at least.

It's not like every one is a disease bomb. I've gotten bitten hundreds of times but I've only gotten lyme once and nothing else as far as I know from them. The trick is to check yourself right after you go out and pull them off before they have time to transmit anything.

I grew up on a farm and was outside constantly and never got a tick.
I moved out to the forest last year and I think I've found upwards of 10 on me, I live in Australia and we don't have lymes disease here, but we do have paralysis ticks.
I'm not dead yet, I just pluck em off with tweezers. I've had an itchy circle like a mosquito bite appear around a bite once.

I hate anything like cream or spray on my skin but these fuckers force me to spray myself in deet before I do any work outside.

They probably wont survive a wash but they are pretty hardy, I've had a few crawl pit of my sink 8h after I washed them down.
The thing with full coverage is once they're on you they're on you, home free to end up anywhere. On your hip, hairline, nuts, wherever and chances are you wont feel it. If you have exposed skin, you can feel and see them as you get them and deal with it then, you'll get a ton less bites cause of it, and you'll bring a lot less home with you on your clothes.

I was bit when I was 12 or 13, woke up one day and felt a ring on my elbow. The tick was gone, but had to go on a penicilin cure for 8 ish weeks. That was more terrible, tasted like shit, 4 tablets a day. But not something I fear every time im out. Literally more afraid of stepping on wasp barefoot.

I know a guy who was a grad student in engineering and developed lyme. He had to do cognitive remediation, like going back to school starting from grade school, retraining your brain in new methods of attention and concentration. Lyme fucks people up in different ways, for him it was fucking up his brain. I'd probably kill
