Does anyone here own the Molle II large rucksack, and if so would you recommend it? What are the advantages and disadvantages? For only around $60 and a huge amount of storage I’m heavily considering it to replace my overpriced LL Bean backpack that has practically no support.

I don't own one myself but chose the ALICE large instead. From what I heard back then (7 or 8 years ago), the Molle has a rather weak and shortlived plastic frame and low quality zippers. also, the molle loop system sucks, as the gear on the loops will always wobble around.

Also, the alice is way cheaper (30 bucks where I bought it).

The frame sucks, yes. The gen2 and gen3 bags that have the integral sleeping bag compartment are much better (the gen1 had a separate compartment that would flop around horribly and an even worse frame that would routinely crack with only about 45lbs in the bag). The zippers are fine on quality but the surplus bags have generally been abused, and may have teeth issues. I've never had a problem with MOLLE pouches flopping around, you either didn't actually weave it or the bag itself wasn't full enough to provide support (in which case sewn on pockets would've flapped around too).

You can usually find a muhreen ILBE ruck for not much more than that and they are both much less abused and much better quality.

Good enough but if kit. Extra frames are cheap and accessible. Know how to rig it. Don’t use extra pouches if unneeded and keep it tight. Alice hellcat is preferable imo. Hellcat>filbe>molle ii/ilbe

Dave Canterbury recommended that pack years ago so I got one. At that time they were maybe $50 with the dry bag. This is the only military surplus thing I have ever bought in my life and love it. It’s huge and extremely comfortable, not what I expected. But now the price went up

Did Dave recommend it as a trapline pack basket rig? Because that’s all I use mine for. Rucking a three 30lb beavers (plus traps and tools) out of a frozen swamp is about all it’s good for.

Yeah the pack itself is made on contract by Arc'teryx. Fit can be a bit wonky at times because it's cut specifically for wear with body armor, and the pack itself is pretty heavy empty, but it's extremely well made.

I wish I could talk myself into buying one, but as former Army I want absolutely nothing to do with marpat (and the extremely small number of plain tan ones on the market command new-Arc'teryx prices and totally aren't worth it).

The woodland ones are still available on ebay for $60.
