For example, the german assault weapons ban bans only guns converted from fully automatic to semi auto, while fullauto and semiautomatic variants of fullautos are legal, while the american ban bans guns based on how they look (barrel shrouds, pistol grips etc.).
My recommendation would be a shortbarreled folding stock Saiga in 7,62 Nato, but those might fall under your local assault weapons ban. While I don't own one (yet), from what I've heard, they are pretty reliable, and from messing around with one a buddy of mine owns, I can tell you that they're extremely comfortable to handle due to their shortness and the russian style safety switch. Recoil is stronger than on a full-size AK though as there's less weight to absorb it, but with semi auto, that's not to much of a problem.
