I know this is /x/ tier but since most if not all of these are in the outdoors I thought itd be good here also.

what is everyone's thoughts on cryptozoology and notable cryptid legends that have been apart of North American outdoor culture for so long now?

Jackalopes, Bigfoot, chupacabra, skinwalkers, wendigos, etc

Its not just an American thing. Pretty much anywhere that Europeans "discovered" had these sorts of things.

Like bunyips and yowies and shit are based upon native Australian's myths but its not like the Europeans could really understand it. They hear about some strange creature that all the tribes in the area talk about and assume its a real thing. Its not like they could tell, the blokes back in England reckoned the platypus was a hoax for the longest time. It was playing up the whole adventurer/explorer type thing, successfully hoodwinking the aristocracy meant more funds for more travels and even encouraged more people to join the expeditions. It still goes on today, someone sees a feral cat and bang on about how they saw a Tassie tiger or some sort of phantom cat, and it attracts visitors.

People swear by it but memories are kinda faulty things, its why gaslighting and other manipulation is so effective.

I remember my parents and sisters being bored as fuck trying to pry me away from Loch Ness when we visited as a kid. Our 5 minute look became over an hour as I wondered to shoreline to stall them, I was sure I could be someone who saw it.

Skinwalkers for instance were traditionally just thought to be really twisted shamans who could transform into animals by wearing ones pelt and (somehow) putting a human soul into it to make it magical. The catch was that each different animal pelt needed an individual human soul to make it work, and every time they transformed back into a human, their natural body would become slightly more animalistic.So the really accomplished Skinwalkers were these horribly mutated manimals that stalked around the woods wearing a mountain of pelts waiting to stumble upon a human to murder and put into his next skin.
So the character of the Skinwalker is one who pursues power to such a degree that he loses his humanity as a direct consequence. Are they physically real? Nah.
There is the odd thing that makes me wonder about Bigfoot maybe being legit though.

I have seen first hand a long dark green/brown serpent with triangular spines going in and out of the water. I was on a ferry around Vancouver BC. It was amazing, my mother doesn't like to talk about it because she doesn't want to sound crazy, but we both saw it.

I've also had an experience where while camping south of St Hellens deep in the Gifford Pinchot my GF and I heard something yelling and wooping in the woods, then the ground shook and there was a loud cracking sound. The next morning we found a tree that was broken about 5 feet off the ground I the direction of the sounds. That was something, maybe bigfoot, maybe manbearpig.
