On this day, 94 years ago, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine left their tents in a final and desperate attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which had never been conquered. They were last seen 245 meters (800 feet) from the the very top of the world before vanishing into the clouds. They were never seen alive again.
