Some serious advive:

Not even. Australian here, don't have ticks or leeches here but first time I got a leech overseas shit is terrifying even if you know they're harmless.

It depends on where you were geographically. NE north american ticks have lyme disease. I live in the midwest and get bitten a dozen times each year and I never have any trouble.

This. I have half a dozen free-ranged hens and they have really diminished the tick population. Also clearing fallen scrub and pine needles and stuff where they like to hide and breed and keeping the grass short is good.

I got babesia apparently from a tick bite. (It's a single celled parasite that lives in your blood.) I never noticed as some people don't get sick from it.

Bums me out though because now I can't donate blood anymore and I used to do that regularly because I have a relatively rare and useful blood type.

Because my ex coworker has it and is too far gone for any medical help. He was forty years old and because he took so much time off, even though me and many of his friends donated at least 100 days of time off he was forced to retire
He lives in constant pain and can barely move most days
Ticks are no joke and are far worse than any bear/wolf /couger/meth head hiding in the woods

I was bit today, in Wisconsin which is a hotbed for lyme, and the tick was a nymph, which is where most of lyme transmission comes from. Going to post some photos here, I'm 90% sure it's a deer tick, but would appreciate anyone commenting as to whether you think it's a deer or dog tick. Probably going to take it to the doctor tomorrow anyway just because I'm a fucking pussy who is afraid of this shit.

FWIW I was wearing jeans, hiking boots, and long socks.

What I neglected to do yesterday was spray some permethrin on pants and boots, I was only working outside for like 20 minutes, sorta unexpectedly, and I should have known better. Whenever I know I'm going to be working in the woods all day, I make sure to spray permethrin on my boots and pants and I rarely have any issues with ticks.

I think anon means that in the eastern United States there is a tick called the lone star tick which makes you allergic to "non-primate mammalian meat" if it bites you.

I bought a pair of permethrin-treated pants and a long sleeve shirt after my first tick scare, since then I've only occasionally found ticks on my pants and just have to flick them off with my fingers when I do find one. I also usually check my body frequently while hiking. Might look like a dork with my pants tucked into my socks to strangers but rather look weird to strangers than deal with ticks and lyme disease.

Ticks are so easy to deal with. Over the winter take meth or heroin and hardcore drug really and build up a resistance to it. By summer you’ll have enough of the drugs in you that it won’t affect you, but it will kill the ticks who bite you.
