I'm no structural engineer but you'll need more sopport - 4x4s or lally caolumns to keep the roof from caving in. Dirt is heavier than people think and you'll die in there if you fuck it up. Also wrap the top and sides with thick plastic sheeting and make sure there's proper drainage around the sides so it doesn't flood the floor constantly (could also build a raised plywood floor on cinder blocks or the like).

Ventilation is important but especially if you want to cook or have a fire, I would put a smoke/carbon monoxide detector in it and checking for radon might prevent lung cancer in 20yrs.

here we go. get something designed to go underground like concrete electrical vaults or corrugated metal pipe. Shipping containers are designed to have the weight of dirt pressing in on the sides and regularly fail when used for this purpose. A walk-in freezer is designed for insulation, not to withstand 2000 to 3000 pounds per square foot

We built shit like this all the time as kids. Bit of steel mesh as a roof, held up by steel pickets, baling twine to hold it all together, no retaining wall at all, leaves dirt and grass to camouflage the roof.

I spent a whole afternoon in it once cause my bitch sister locked me out of the house when it was freezing. It was kind of nice in my little dirt hole.

If you realistically want a small underground shelter, try getting a 10' culvert (it's designed to be buried) and outfit that.

I thought hard about building an underground structure a while back.
It's completely reasonable to diy one.
Here was my plans.
>dig into hillside as much as you want
>dig oval shaped area with perimeter at least down to bedrock
>build up your foundation out of concrete
>fill your interior space with compacted dirt
Here's where it splits:
1.
>form your rebar and start molding
>pour concrete and fill dirt against the mold in layers as you work your way up
>let it dry, then go in with a digger and dig the interior
2.
>They make these giant concrete blocks, like 2'x2'x6' thst interlock, you may have seen one in your life.
>they also make them with a slope that are intended to be used for forming culverts
>use them to build your walls
>dig out inside once done

Only problem is that concrete and rebar are expensive, but it should be cheap to do a small scale one with a 6.5ft radius and 6ft long bit.
You could also make one that's just a hemisphere.

should be fine if it was small enough and round.
I built one with a timber frame, then built the earthbag walls with rebar hammerer through them. I built it about 9 years ago and its still standing.

Here in Florida lots of "underground" houses.

Actually my whole elementary school was an underground building covered in dirt. They eventually undug it and put a roof on it instead. (ahhhh playing on the grass roof with the billions of fire ants...)

The big issue is the water creep. If you live in a wet area. Your undergrown roof NEEDS to be steeper than you think. And be above the water table considerably.

IDK maybe some thick polytarp of some sort on top with all the edges sealed with a tarp or liquid adhesive.

Remember to keep the roof from growing trees/anything with deep roots.
