Like that other guy said, almost anything works.

For plastic, try 1" minnows on a 1/64 oz jighead (trout magnet jighead). You can also try the same plastic on a #8 mosquito hook on a dropshot rig. A friend caught the biggest bluegill I'd ever seen on a 1" minnow.

Though my favorite technique is very subtle surface dapping a tiny (maybe #16) shiny gold bare hook on the water surface. You can also use small flies as originally intended.

Seriously. A size eight, ten, or twelve hook, with pretty much anything. They will bite, and be caught.

You could also use corn, bread, maggots (real or fake) meal worms, pieces of earth worms, and so forth.

How do you guys fish T-rigged lizards?
Only time I ever caught a bass on one I just scooted it across the bottom, and 1 bass over the course of maybe 6 outings isn't good.

Same way you fish a worm pretty much. Drag it or hop it. For all around use I like a 5/16 weight. I go down to 1/8 if it's super super calm, or I'll go up to 1/2 if it's windy or the bass are being super aggressive.

It's just felt the best to me. Also I pretty much only use tungsten so 5/16 is readily available everywhere that sells tungeston. I think I feel like the 3/8 weights are almost too large, and the 5/16 gives me confidence.

Hey fellow fish people. I got a problem. There's a nuisance alligator(not big - maybe 3.5 feet) that keeps going after my bobbers. He follows me all over this lake. I have a gator at my usual spot that I think is probably around 7-8 feet that doesn’t go after my bobbers but definitely watches me. Our local police department has a policy on gators that says that they can only be killed if they pose a threat to people, and are over 6 feet in length. For yours, you can probably just get away with killing it if you needed to. Depends on the forage you’re trying to imitate.

Crayfish:
Clear water = green pumpkin with flakes, I like green pumpkin/blue flake, or something brown with flakes

Dirty water = black with flakes, typically black/blue flake

Bluegill:
Clear water = watermelon red, green pumpkin, basically anything green with or without flakes

Dirty water = junebug

Shad:
Clear water = clear colors, white, or grey

Dark water = white or chartreuse

Now, I realize worms don’t really imitate anything. Worms are kind of a wild card. You could use natural colors, black/blue, junebug, white, red, pink, etc.

Depends on water clarity, and if you want the worm to be visible to you or not. Personally, I like natural colors with chartreuse tails, as it’s visible yet subtle

Is there any reason I couldn't put a 3000 size reel spooled with either 4lb copoly or 10lb braid on a 6'6+ ultralight rod? I don't give a shit about weight or anything, I'm just concerned about line management or casting issues using that light of line on a relatively big spool.

How do I into saltwater beach fishing?

I have a couple medium action rods. 2 spinning and a memecaster. Can I use one of them for saltwater? What line should I use? I'm a complete beginner to saltwater and still a beginner to fresh water as well. Im in RI and not even sure what I would catch from shore.

You're gonna want to use a reel rated for saltwater, since the bearings and seals are manufactured differently. It depends on bay side vs ocean side but I've success with jigs and spoons, stuff you can hurl for miles into the wind. If there isnt wind zara spooks and other topwaters are really fun to pull strikes.

No lol. The distance the lure goes is determined by the weight of the lure, the diameter of the line, and length and action of your rod. How much line you have stored on your reel isn’t going to magically make it shoot off the spool

no. if you took line drag out of the equasion and tied on just enough to give you something to hold your 1/32 ounce jig, and flung it as hard as you could, how far do you really think it could go? 40 feet? 50? then factor in that with any reel you will have drag from the line peeling off the reel. if you have a 1000 size reel with 110 yards of line, you're never going to cast even half of that.

It be time for the run, you need to find the good tides. work the rocks where the bait stacks up and not structure less tourist beaches. as a noob you will lose lots of lures to the rocks and they arent cheap. buy some eels and terminal tackle instead.

tldr: look for structure.

Rod length (read: initial velocity) and air resistance - both lure and line - are the bigger factors. They don't test for lure weight though. Mass and air drag are related though and generally bigger weight also means larger lure leading to more air drag.

Are you sure you understand how a spinning reel works? The bigger the reel the less restistance the line has while casting. Obviously there's a point where a reel is too big, but it makes a difference.

I’ve been tying lures on 8” sections of fishing line a doing a surgeons loop at the other end with a swivel on my main line so that I can quickly change lines. How bad of an idea is this? I’m not getting a ton of fish right now, is that because of how I’ve been doing this pre tied setup? Otherwise it just seems like I spend more time tying on lures than actually fishing.

How does that make any sense? Regardless of the spool size all line is going to get the same amount of drag on the lip of the spool as it comes off. How does having more line on the spool change the way the drag is applied to it? How does a larger diameter spool decrease that resistance?

You know how casting with a spinning reel that's half full makes the distance trash? That's basically what happens at the end of every cast. The line has to go over a bigger lip as the cast goes on. With a bigger reel you reduce the size of the lip at the end of the cast.

Lol what. A skinnier spool just means more line is hitting that lip and the lip is going to get bigger faster. Thus increasing restistance. If you don't think an 1/16th in of lip is going to have less restistance than an 1/8th in I can't help you.

It's literally the same reason smaller line cast better.

If you have line that is rated for the spool that you have, after you take a cast the size of that gap will be proportionally exactly the same as any bigger size reel. I've tested this over 3 different sized reels and 3 different rods. Everything being equal, the bigger reel cast the furthest.

It's especially noticable when using lures lighter than what the rod is rated for.

You can put the same line on different reel, especially for braids. Reel line rating is in range, not a set single value. A 15-20 lb line can go on a reel from size 2000 to 4000 depend on what you are trying to do

Got called in last minute to work today so I'm heading up tomorrow instead, I will be fishing the flowage mostly, but I make a point to fish that string of lakes in the bottom left because it can't be beat for bluegill. The dam at the bottom of the flowage is always good for rock bass, and bait is free with all the crawdads in the rocks.

I've owned St. Croix rods from the Triumph all the way to the Legend series, they do not even compare to sensitivity, speciality and action of JDM rods. Not to mention that St. Croix only has a few rods that even utilize the newer Fuji Guides. Once you jig with the Fuji Concept guides or cast with the K or Torzite Guides you'll never go back.

Spinning reel is piss easy. I learn to use one right away in a day when I was like 8. The key is to not skimp on your line and pick up a trilene xl line pack with lb test matched with your reel and fill your reel with it. Don’t use the line that comes with the reel ( if there is any).

That's how I fucked up the fly rod, I had too much glue on the guides and while it *works* it feels like pure shit and casts poorly.

Don't listen to anyone advising against Ugly Stik. They are great rods. Your cart is (almost) my exact setup! Same line, I use a Penn Fierce II, and my Ugly Elite is 6'6" Medium. It's a great inshore salt rod/reel/line. I've caught a lot of sizable fish with it.

Ugly stik has bad sensitivity and a tons of people on this general fish solely with lures which make ugly stik a bad choice. It’s fine as a bait soaking or live bait rod. I would recommend getting one between 7-8 ft though. 6 ft is too short for most inshore application and is awkward with a 4000 penn reel

Vertical jigging rods from boat. You are just dropping the jig straight down deep so having a short rod reduces weight and improves sensitivity (important for deep water jigging). 6ft is not so bad for UL or light rod for fishing in small ponds. It makes it easier to cast in confined space and cast more accurately. However rod around 7ft seems to be much more well rounded even for that application

I hooked an adult Atlantic grey seal on a Sidewinder lure from my kayak last weekend. It's not exactly a drama, the weight and power of them soon snaps the line or the leader knot. If you've never had one surface alongside of you, they can be 8' long and 500lbs+. They're also used to swallowing whole fish that have spines and barbs. Worst danger I've had from a seal was a pup climbing on my kayak after a mackerel I'd caught. I gave it the mackerel.

yesterday I was playing around with 1" minnows and I started noticing that the bluegill would try to swim away with the minnows. so i let out a whole bunch of line and saw a few bluegill swallow like 90% of the minnow and then swim away. it was really cute.

while the small bluegill are easy to catch, the big ones are very difficult. had trouble figurin out what would induce a strike from them, probably corn or something but i didn't have any food on me.

just get good at tying knots. You should be able to tie an improved clinch knot in less than 10 seconds.

Also, you shouldn't be changing lures every 10 minutes. Make an educated guess, fish it for at least 30 minutes unless it's obviously wrong. Don't move from lure to lure to lure until you get lucky or you may never really know what the fish like under those conditions since you didn't actually fish it long enough.

Depends. Small ones (under 20 inches) a 2000 should be fine, 2500 maybe. I'd say a 3000 is good for big blues, decent size cats and drum, and 4000 if big drum 40 inch plus) is your primary target. Spool with suitable braid (20 for 2000 or 2500, 30 for 3000, 40 for 4000) and have fun

If you have never used one before I would suggest a net with a radius that is at least a foot less than your height. For shrimp stay around 1/4-1/2 inch holes. As for brands unless you are doing this as a job than any Wal-Mart net will do fine.

I do a lot of the same fishing and I found it best when just tying my line directly to the rooster tail. You don't need a swivel since the inline spinner won't twist your line, and a snap is just gonna mess with the flow of water and make the spinner not work correctly. Long story short it's worth the little extra time to just tie the line directly to the lure.

ive been fly fishing for...well anything that will bite.
ive just recently gotten back into fishing and buying things. so far i have a small assortment of small to medium sized lures and soft plastic worms/fish (shad), and a smaller rod and spinning real from bass pro for it. then ive got a pretty basic fly rod and a hard case for it and probably 50 different premade flies, and a few me and my father made a few years ago. but like i said ive just started to get back into it, like a week ago just started lol.

I've been reading up on this myself recently. There are options.

Some people just use a regular cooler, and strap it down via the handles to the bungee mounts.

Some use wet towels, and wrap their catch in it. Evaporative cooling (keep it wet!) will help keep the fish cooler than otherwise.

Some people use stringers (pull it in before you go to shore).

One I'm looking into is some insulated shopping bags. There are some more and some less complicated methods, such as making a two-chamber set with ice between, ice inside, and putting the fish into a plastic umbrella drip bag.

And some people buy soft-sided bag coolers for the purpose.

Again, it's almost always held in place by the deck lashing system via bungee cords.

I own a 6'9" UL St. Croix Panfish after only ever using a 6' L Ugly Stik for panfish. The biggest difference is sensitivity since I feel the lightest nibble on my jigs and this let's me catch some green sunfish and bluegill in the 3" range which would be good for live bait if I wanted to. I have a problem.
I just bought my second baitcaster. First one was Abu Garcia Blackmax 3 left. paired up with Berkeley e-motion casting rod, stiff as a crowbar.
The new one is Daiwa Aird 100 left. paired with siignificantly softer rod, Okuma Beater.

With the stiff rod I got for big pike fishing, the performance with Blackmax 3 is excellent.

As I setup the Daiwa aird to perform equally, but with alot lighter lures, the thing is a complete mess. I hear a constant scraping noise from the reel, backlash all over the place, but even slightest thumbing of the spool cuts the cast so short its impossible to catch anything.

I think there are two options
1. the rod is way too stiff to cast light lures
2. The reel is defective
>the goddamn scraping noise
>spool drag is irregular, can go from full drag to completely loose in the duration of 5 casts

Is there a fix for the spooldrag, or should I just return the reel into the shop?

Its a combination of defective reel (if that description of spool drag is accurate) and your inexperience with the reel type.
I would get a new reel if I were you. Consistant spool drag is kind of important.

for panfish, the only lures that come to mind are those rebel floating circkets. I guess if you can fine a popper with small enough trebles that will work too.

Maybe you shouldn’t cheap out on your baitcaster. I would say spend minimum of $100-150 for a functioning one, especially if you are new with baitcaster and need all the help you can get. Also, you should thumb the spool near the end of your cast i.e when you see your lure almost hit the water (or if there is wind then when you estimate enough of your line is out so that the lure can fly max distance). Your thumb shouldn’t be rubbing on the spool right after release unless you want to shorten your cast on purpose

When I was maybe 13 I caught a 40 inch pike, and my dad and I were on the boat and didn't have a camera, so we drive all the way back to our cabin to take a picture. I have a spinfisher V setup the rod is rated 1/4oz to 1/0 oz. Problem is, when I use a 1oz sinker + bait + hook etc my rod has a crazy bend and I can never actually tell if I have a fish on or not.

On the flip side..when I use one of my beefier overkill rods I can only tell if I have a HUGE fish on. I had a 30 inch Redfish on my rod and I reeled his ass in about 20-30 secs flat.

Where is the happy medium between all this? I've tried using small pyramid sinkers but I feel like my bait just rolls around in the surf at that point.

Off is a joke and it is not mosquitoes that I am talking about. Every moth, mayfly, junebug, cricket, ect. is going to come flying for your face. Get a second light to use for area lighting and keep it away from you. Then use the headlamp for quick work then turn it back off. As someone that mostly fishes at night I can tell you this is the best option unless you want bugs flying into your eye at full throttle.

This. In the fall when I’m walleye fishing at night, as soon as I click my headlamp on for a split second my head is swarmed with countless bugs. Like the tripfag said they won’t be trying to bite you but they will be flying all around you while it’s on.
