Im looking for a decent hatchet. My money is kind of tight at the moment. I was wondering what /out/ would consider the Mora/Mosin Nagant of the Hatchet world. Prefer something with a wood handle.

Funny, the reason I need a new hatchet is because the shit I got from walmart kept chipping on me, eventually the head fell off when I was chopping. Walmart is shit tier.

What's your budget? And in what area do you live (this may help determine stores to visit or suggest)?

Home Depot carries Estwing hatchets. They will withstand most things, and run roughly $35. Have a look around at local places (or their web sites) and google reviews of them.

A good example is the simple hatchet I was considering from one place, but I found out the steel is much too soft for long-term use.

Forgot to mention my budget. Id like to be around 50 bucks. I looked at some Estwings, but I am not one for steel handles. I like the idea of being able to change my handle if it breaks on me. I also live in the woodlands of mississippi. Pic related, this is typical of my area. I dont care if it is a name brand or how pretty it looks. I just need something that I can depend on. Bells and whistles are just for show most of the time.

As I said, look at web sites of local places, and peruse reviews. Besides the big names (you're looking at well above your budget), it's difficult to find a decent enough quality hatchet in a store. Being a bit heavy aside, many of them have very bad quality steel.

Another good option is to go to flea markets and such, and look for an old hatchet to restore (it's really not difficult).

I ended up picking up an estwing model 1 at home depot last summer, the shit tier sheath split, I even babied it because I assumed it wouldn't last long, going to mold a kydex sheath next time I order shit online

Thanks everyone. I just went ahead and got pic related. I figure the worst that happens is that I break it and have to send it back. The lifetime warranty and price sold it for me. I like it more than I thought. Thanks for the advice guys.

That went well. If you do manage to break it, please take photos, cause that'd be interesting to see! Invest in a cheap sharpening stone as well. Just a coarse/medium disc stone can be had ~$10 and will last the lifetime of your axe.

In honesty, the Estwing isn't made of super steels or anything, so I would expect a couple chips or rough edges fairly often. Nothing major though.

I cut down a tree in my back yard with one last weekend. Tree was about a foot in diameter. No problems. Then again, I'm very used to swinging a hammer. YMMV.

It'll work fine. I've got the larger one with the stacked leather washer handles and it holds an edge surprisingly well. I got mine because I've used Estwing hammers for work for decades. When you're not using it, keep that handle out of sunlight and it will last a surprisingly long time.

I have several hammers because I'm kind of a tool nut and because I want just the right tool for the job. You don't hit anything but nails or a nail set with your nail hammer. I love my Estwing roofing hatchet and camping hatchet. I also love my wood handled Plumb framing hammer which I bought new in 1987. If someone wants to borrow a nail hammer, they get to use the cheapo. I found it in the road with a broken fiberglass handle and put a wood handle on it. No tears if it gets messed up.

OP just make sure you get a hatchet with a hickory handle if they have any at a hardware store near you.
personally mine didnt and i had to settle for a cold steel trail boss, which for the price is great for me.
