>>1294657>>1294681Cougars: maybe, *barely.* Hogs: definitely not. Keep in mind 357 Mag is just a faster 38 Spl, which is comparable to an underpowered 9mm. I wouldn't shoot any live creature with it except varmints, and even then only with hard cast rounds. You want 12ga slugs or rifle rounds (preferably NOT 5.56, as they can ricochet off bone, esp. a hog's shoulder blades). Pistol calibers are generally for soft human targets, not wild animals.
Hogs are considered vermin here, and there's no limit to the number you can bag. If you're actively hunting them, use 12ga slugs or a deer rifle. 308 Winchester is a good choice. If you're not hunting and just want something for protection and really can't be arsed to lug around a proper long arm, 44 Mag or 45 Super would be sufficient. But really if you're considering buying a 44 Mag you might as well go all the way and get a 454 Casull. Revolvers one advantage over semiautos is they're offered in fuckhuge calibers, and Ruger's Super Redhawk is quality. If I absolutely couldn't bring a 12ga for whatever reason, I'd load my 45ACP with hard cast lead bullets and carry a couple extra magazines.
tldr Just carry a 12ga pump shotgun and a pocketful of 1oz slugs.
