If you want to get away from it all, Big Bend country and Guadalupe Mtns Natl Parks are a must. THey really don't compare, however, to the lands in western states such as AZ, CA, UT, CO, NM, MT. But they are worth checking out, especially if you are stuck in Texas. Another nice thing, the farther west you go in Texas the less humidity you have to deal with. Palo Duro is cool--once. It's highly overrated. My brother lives in Arlington TX and he used to like going to the Ozarks in Oklahoma but I've never done that. New Mexico is going to be more than a day's drive, but if you head there, the Pecos and Gila Wildernesses are hardcore /out. There are tons of other places worth checking out in New Mexico. If you are going to drive to NM, I would just spend another day driving and head to southern Utah, or if you like the mountains, the places I mentioned in NM or Colorado. Don't listen to these Texas fags telling you how great /out is in their state--it isn't. A good measure of /out is what percent of the state is federally owned--afterall, that's where the national forests and national parks are. IF I remember correctly, only about 1% of TX is federally owned. Compare that to 33% of New Mexico and 67% in Utah and 91% of Nevada (Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other state, including Alaska). Despite what TX fags tell you, people just don't go to TX in large numbers for /out unless they are going to lay on the beach at Padre Island. The humidity outside of west TX sucks and really puts a damper on any /out experience there.
