Ok, we all know that it's illegal except in very specific areas. Do you flout the law and go wild camping regardless of the risk?

I am tempted to give it a try and am looking for some tips. I live close to Brecon.

Have any of you had any problems from park rangers or land owners when wild camping?

Yes. Look for woodland far from roads, buildings, and paths. I have been camping in Brecon and it was shit: middle of May '15 and we got all four seasons of weather every day, plus one spooky happening, so I don't recommend Brecon.

I've been caught camping and I've never gotten into any trouble. If the landowner tells you to go then go. I've never been caught with a fire though. If you use a basha it's not technically camping as far as the law is concerned, so it's a grey area which is potentiality a bad thing.

We were camping in the valley with my college course and some guys from the Rifles, a combat engineer, a para, and a combat medical technician and we were chatting and playing cards in the tent when it got very very cold and all the bugs and birds fucked off, and something instinctive deep inside us said "don't move and don't make a sound". It passed quickly and all the animals and the temperature came back bit it unnerved all of us. The soldiers said it was one of the Welsh tropical depressions but the next morning they said they had no idea what it was and it had them rattled too.

I went wild camping yesterday.

You won't get in trouble if it's public land, they'll just ask you to move on. Not so sure about private land though.

>my tips:
- Don't leave the site in a mess or start hacking branches off trees for firewood, that's when you'll get in trouble.
- A good concealed, efficient fire is the dakota fire pit.
- If it's private land and you see a sign that says no trespassing then don't risk it.
- Pack light so you can leave quick if necessary.
- Go off trail if you're in woodland or a national park.
- Watch out for dog walkers, they're the ones that catch you in the mornings, although they probably wouldn't care.
- After 17:00, there's pretty much no one wandering the wilderness so set up camp some time after that.

On my way to my local spot in Buckinghamshire. It's been my wild camping spot for a decade now and I've never been caught there. 10 min into dense woodland, pretty much as far as you can get from a trail. Surrounded by holly and oak with a patch of birch just behind which are always dying standing up and make perfect dry fire wood. It used to be really popular area with dog walkers and families but they coppiced bits of it and drove caterpillar gulleys into all the trails so the people left and the animals moved back in. Muntjac everywhere, woodpeckers for the last couple years. Badgers. There was an escaped panther for a while too but he died in the snow one year.

You can pretty much get away with it easily. I always setup late and pack up early, so if you're always on the move, nobody really has anything against you. I often use hexamine when cooking, so I can make a quick meal and not be spotted when trespassing. If you don't cause a bad mess, no one really minds too much, just be polite when confronted.

I've wild camped in half the counties in the UK. Ive never been caught, but I don't keep what I'm doing a secret either; I constantly have to apologise to people for smelling like wood smoke and the nonplussed reaction is always "oh, are you camping then?" In very rural areas it's 100% tolerated unless you're unlucky enough to meet a council member.
Ask at local pubs where a good place to camp is. They'll fill your water bottles while you're at it.

Snowdonia is great for wild camping, never been told to move on once. As long as you pitch late and strike early I doubt you’ll have a problem in most national parks.

Was in Dorset a few weeks ago and there were loads of climbers camped out along the coast, for days at a time. I’m not saying do that because it’s kinda shitty but you’re not likely to get caught.

Those huge areas of agricultural land cover literally pretty much everything that is not urban or suburban. Only places where you have even little places to call wilderness are in Alps and Pyrenees.

I did some clay pigeon shooting when I was in college. 12 gauge was too much for me, had to use the 20. Proudest moment was when I hit two birds with a single slug. I wouldn't mind going game hunting but I'm out of practice. That and it'd be expensive as fuck, to say nothing of having to drive all the way out into some ass end of nowhere spot like Cornwall, East Anglia or the Cotwswolds.

If you're in a national park like Brecon, while still 'illegal', as long as you're away from the main trail, set up late in the evening and are packed up by morning, people don't really give a shit.

From what I recall, the Lake District is the only place where the council has flatly stated that they allow it (as long as you stick to the above principles, ofcourse), but it applies in most places. The most that will happen if you get caught is you get some guy tapping on your tent who'll politely ask you to move on.

The only time people genuinely get into bother is when they go around camping on farm land or other privately owned land (I know all land in England/Wales is owned by someone, Queen or otherwise, but I mean actual landowners who live on it) without getting permission.

I've wild camped and even been caught quite a bit of them, without any problems (Never by police though which may be a totally different experience).
People are more curious than furious when they find you and generally don't seem to mind you doing it as long as they feel reassured you're not moving in like a pikey basically.
