>>1298063Ummmmm this has a kernel of truth to it. The less contact and / or insulation you have between you and the ground greatly reduces how fast you lose body heat. Essentially the more your body heat is lost through radiation in terms of % the slower it is for you to cool down.
However if you're in truly freezing conditions and have the choice between a very well insulated sleeping bag or a hammock / extremely good sleeping mat you're better off with the sleeping bag.
It's an issue where both don't oppose or benefit one greatly over the other but rather both are extremely complimentary.
