I've tried these before on a trip, at $10 a meal + snacks it's a rip off but the logistical convenience seems nice.

p.s the rat packs they sell at that website are pretty mediocre, highlight is the MRE, everything else is low grade snacks you buy at discount supermarkets.

The local military surplus store sells MRE's for around $5 a piece. I bought one just to see how they taste and it actually wasn't too bad. It's a shitload of food though, and I couldn't eat it all. I try to stay away things with a lot of packages so I don't have to haul a bunch of garbage with me.

Yeah we have a very similar product in the NZ Army. They are okay but I always give away my noodles and some of the MRE meat packs in them are absolute shit (Sweet and Sour Pork, Moroccan Lamb and thai chicken), the ones that they have listed are alright though. They also seem to give you way too many condiments and we always give them to one guy in a section to carry around and make coffees and shit for us.

just buy a $50 dehydrator and make your own shit. it isn't hard and it saves a shitton of money. I make fruit leathers, jerky, and meals. easy-peazy, and it costs no more than a regular meal. certainly better quality and less expensive than $5-7 a bag.

i bought this 2 years ago. i've eaten about 4 meals out of it when i've been really lazy/broke. (i generally go camping and eat fresh)

these meals are not very desirable if you're a chef. but it's probably the cheapest/longest lasting food storage solution you could possibly purchase. i only bought it case of nuclear fallout =].

i also saw a gentleman who had this bucket hanging from his bike on a recent trip from big sur, CA to lancaster, CA.. maybe he has some more advice to chip in on WISE food products (my favorite was the southwest beans and rice)

That pick always gives me a queasy feeling in my stomach. I think I'd rather be stuck with a jar of peanut butter, a bag of walnuts, and a a few boxes of saltine crackers than to have to be stuck with that shit and I hate saltine crackers.

Oh hey, that's me! Those WISE emergency food rations are decent after a 30 mile trek. All of them are pretty bland and have little flavour (save for the pasta alfredo, which is a thick, viscous, starchy monstrosity). Most of them can be boiled in the bag (the bags with flat bottoms, at any rate).

Each packet is 4 servings, so you'll be hard-pressed to eat it on your own. And each bucket comes with 15 4-serving packets.

Most of them go down good used as tortilla filling, that's for certain.
