I just got to denver from the Midwest and im feeling all goofy. How long did it take you other/out/ists for your altitude sickness to settle down the first time?

I live at 66ft elevation.
Every weekend I go into the mountains and hike between 5000ft and 6000ft elevation. Never noticed a problem.

If you're easily susceptible to altitude sickness, just start running at your livable elevation. It will help when you need better cardio functions at higher elevations.

It isn't the altitude in Denver, it's too low. It might just be all the smog. I went from sea level to Denver up to Telluride and that's when it hit me. Of course I went hiking and drinking the next day. You'll live if you don't have the cardio fitness of John Goodman.

HAPE and HACE are just as likely to kill extremely fit athletes, including ones that have spent tons of time at altitude. It's pretty random.

at 5000 feet it's less likely than getting eaten by a bear in Denver. I've actually been there, been to 9600 feet to train, and did not see anyone except chain smoking tourists collapse in stairwells. The OP should be half way to having enough RBCs to get over mild discomfort.

It becomes way more common above 8k feet. At that point you're thousands of times more likely to die from it than be killed by a bear. Hundreds of times more likely to be killed by it than by lightning. Despite the fact that the vast majority of people that develop HAPE and HACE survive it.

I drove into Colorado springs from Arkansas on tuesday, drove pikes peak on wednesday, spent most of the day around 10k ft at lake hancock on thursday and just did Blanca peak over the last 2 days. I felt a bit short of breath on the last 1k ft of Blanca and that was about it. Do I reccomend saying "fuck it" and going whole hog on your first day? NO.

I’ve hiked for 6-8 hours at a time at 8,000 feet ascending to 10,000 feet and I get symptoms pretty much every time. I bought an oximeter to figure out whether or not I was just being a pussy and I hover around 80%-85% after exertion. Shit sucks. I’m 98% at normal altitude.

Sounds like you're confusing altitude sickness with something else, like taking poor care of yourself. Take it easy, eat healthy, stay hydrated and unless something else is wrong with you, you'll be fine in a week or so.
Altitude accommodation doesn't happen overnight, your body has to make more rbcs, which takes time. This is why people who hike everest have to stay at base camps at progressively higher altitudes to adapt. Even though they bring supplemental oxygen.

I live around 2000 ft and I camp and hike at 10000 ft in the Utah mountains. I usually feel short of breath and tired while setting up my camp the first day, but by the morning of the next day I feel completely normal. I can hike just as far and as quick as I do around home.

I hike above 10,000 feet in the Uintas every summer, I never feel out of breath. Probably because that's lower than where I live.
