Does anyone have experience with these? My grandpa gave me a pair identical to pic related. They are a size 45 EU which is like 11-11.5~ in US sizes. They are a tad big as I usually wear 10.5 US, I figure if I put an insole in them they will fit better. He used them while in the military so they are a bit worn but not anything significant. I figure with a bit of maintenance I can make them last a long time. I haven't worn them /out/ yet, only around the house. Thoughts?

For winter, use really heavy weight wool socks and it will fill those out nicely inside and make them a comfy fit.

I bought the Varusteleka Finnish Army Perkele surplus jackboots when they were in stock. Worst pair of boots I've ever had during the break in period, after that they have been great. Love them. I use them for hiking and most things outdoors. I recommend you put a good insole inside if they feel a bit roomy. Your heel shouldn't move up and down in the boots when walking.

Interesting thing. The finns seem to be okay with using jackboots and of course various armies used it in history. Then again, the germans had these little straps to keep the heel in, because despite being called "marching boots" they were just so shit for actual marching.

IIRC the finnish jackboots are all leather; leather does have a certain breathability. The russian boots are faux leather in the shaft, basically half rubber boots. You're supposed to switch footwraps to deal with the moisture.

I did a 10km hike or so through wild woods in wellington boots and it was pretty much ok during walking but I had terrible blisters and my feet stank like hell afterwards.

I have pic related for a few years now, you have to wear footwraps, they'll be miserable until then. You can dick around with boot socks n shit but it isn't the same. With footwraps your heel won't flop around. I can wear mine pretty much anywear, they don't have as good as traction as modern boots but you get used to it.

These are not the enlisted men fake leather boots, it has a name but I forgot. I can confirm these boots are 100% calf leather except for the sole. The officers pretty much always had all leather.

The fake Soviet leather is called kirza, and you're right. The officer boots were pretty much always leather and you said yours were issued in 1973 so yeah they probably aren't kirza.
