I used to ride a Vstrom in Wyoming, and am currently living in CO and driving a BMS GS 1200 Adv. Really love the bike, have only been able to take it a couple places off pavement, but looking forward to more.
You can learn a good bit of the basics from Youtube, like when and why you would stand, going over logs, leaning etc.

I'm building a loadout, but as it stands I'm too broke to take any kind of vacation. My bike's a commuter that occasionally gets dirty.
And nobody makes panniers for my bike. So anything I do pack has to be super light. (Current search: Hammocks with rain fly., Then maybe a gas can.) Food and a single sweater can take up half my box if I'm not careful.
And I've never had anyone teach me how to stay in control off-road. So granny speeds on forest service roads. Still gets me to the trailhead fine, but I'd like to learn to push it on single track.
