Archery thread

Help a newfag out: I'm interested but I can't really understand what to look in a good beginner's bow.
How do you choose one? How many pounds of draw weight?
Recurve or longbow?
If you can suggest a good model I would be grateful

I made one out of pvc pipe, draw weight was 15lbs or with bow itself, I put fiberglass inside and that jumped it up to 33lbs. Backywardbowyer has good tutorial videos when you wanna do archery on the cheap but willing to put in effort.

Start with about a 40lbs draw and only use it like 3 days a week shooting only about 15 arrows each day. Work up by shooting more over time. By the end of the month you should be shooting 25-30 arrows a day. Do it slowly or you will fuck up your shoulders and won't even be able to pull the bow back once because of the pain and weakness you've caused to them. You really shouldn't be shooting more than 50 arrows a day max, 3 days a week max. If you are not hitting the targets like you want to hit them then it isn't about how much you are practicing, it is that your stance and method of shooting is wrong in some way. That also means getting in close and knowing how deer move when being shot at. Also, add everything to the bow and strings you can that will make it more silent when shot.

Get one from an actual reputable bow maker. Don't get ones from ebay or amazon that are from China. Those almost always are simply glued and pieced together in ways that make them fail catastrophically after only a few uses. As in the entire bow snapping in half. Remember, these things are weapons and extremely dangerous to you when they break under great stress. Paying top dollar means you are also paying for your own safety. If you decide to make one, use proper traditional materials, tools, and bow designs. They work properly for a very good reason. Because they've been designed and redesigned for multiple generations until they are near perfect.

I'm new as well, happy with my Samick Sage. Started at 30#. It's the same model my local range would lend me before I bought my own. Now I can upgrade my limbs for a reasonable price. As with all hobbies, it's better not to spend a ton of money until you've been practicing for a while and know what you like. When I have a solid form and feel ready to buy a high end technical bow for hunting (might be a few years), I will continue to enjoy this basic bow for instinctive shooting.

What do you want to do with your bow, target (sport) shooting, hunting or traditional shooting (larping)?

If target shooting, then pick a recurve or compound and you don't need that high a draw weight.

If hunting, high draw is better for cleaner kills on larger game. Recurve is more common but compound can get you more powerful and more accurate kills. You will need special hunting arrows.

If traditional then longbow or a classic looking recurve.

If OP starts on a 40lb bow then you can all but guarantee he'll learn terrible form. 25 is a better starter number. Even better is to join a club if there is one available, and use their starter bows and their coaches to get some low poundage practice, with knowledgeable people nearby to pick up significant errors before they be one habit. Then, you can work your way up to 40+lbs.

I’d recommend a compound to start, easier to learn, and it’ll translate well into a trad bow.

For a beginner compound bow I’d look at PSE or Bear.

Draw weight depends on what you want to use it for, and is the most important question at this point.

If you are a fully grown man and not a huge pussy you can start a lot higher than what others are saying.

I shot archery a lot as a kid and after like a decade of not shooting I can shoot my new 70 pound compound with no issue. The first time I shot it I shot over 50 arrows with no issue. Just stop if you get tired. Just focus on form when you practice.

Absolutely not true. If anything, it's backwards. If you start on a recurve you can shoot a compound no problem, but if you start on a compound you're gonna have a hard time holding a recurve at full anchor.

I bought a Ragim Wildcat 70"(body length 1,93cm, this is very important) with 40lbs and a Hunting scope.
Works very well, at least if you adjust the string between 7,8" to 8" and a good knockpoint.

No it will not. As >>1299302 said, the draw is basically the opposite.
Not only that, but the aiming process is completely different. You don't aim the traditional bow, you point it to the right direction, draw, and loose. It's closer to throwing a spear than shooting a compound bow.
Starting with a modern compound bow will do more harm than good for your progress.

Not that guy but the point is often a longer less populated hunting season. Not being able to outrange a gun is also sort of the point, bow hunting is more about tracking and stalking than rifle hunting, lots of people like that about it.

Recurve will be marginally easier to begin with, the grip on a recurve is easier to shoot with good form and the shelf and sight window are more generous. Either is fine though, you'll learn one way or the other and both do the job.

30# or so is probably a safe bet to begin with. Try it out if you can, get a sense of what draw weight feels like. Also, get some sense of how to draw and shoot. If you just pick up a 30# bow and make it up, it's not going to work for you.

PSE recurves and longbows are reasonably priced. My first recurve was a PSE takedown and I'm happy with it. You guy who said join a club and start with their bows is pretty much right on.

Arrow speed is a product of draw weight/length, bow efficiency and arrow weight. If we're talking about traditional bows, almost everything is going to be between 150 and 180fps, which is not going to make a lot of distance in terms of jumping the string. Getting close and a quiet release/flight will be more helpful. Shooting a trigger release on a trad bow is a bit bizarre.

Because your gonna have to shoot a LOT! and shooting with 50 lb + bows for multiple times a day in Hot weather, is not reccomended.

Also If your gonna use a TRAD bow without any riser, and shoot off your hand. In order to not hurt your hand you MUST nock the arrow higher than where you grip the bow.

A good principle is nock the arrow so that when you let the arrow fall it is pointing down at a 90 degree angle. This way you wont hurt your hand.

Also learn to get a rhythmn of shooting. And dont expect to suddenly be able to hit a rabbit, or small target from far away like it is nothing. Hollywood, video games. Are not realistic depictions of archery. Even people who lived off the land hundreds of years ago would occasionally miss their target.

I took a few lessons at a local archery range, but I was warned by a friend not to talk about hunting. Turns out it was good advice; run by literal boomers who will poke fun at anything that isn't Olympic style shooting with a recurve. In the first session that is marketed towards absolute beginners they hung shit ok crossbows for, like, 4 whole minutes. Was kinda crazy to see the dislike for other kinds of archery. They also seem to dislike compound bows and only allow them grudgingly; the head instructor guy threw a lot of shade on them and I could practically see one of the other, younger instructors' eyebrow twitch. Long story short, I've had a handful of lessons on how to shoot but I'm still clearly in novice territory, but I don't know where to start getting into the kind of shooting I want to do.

So what do /out/? All the resources I've found are American, and importing American bows will work out really expensive.

That's just how target clubs are. Field and 3D clubs will be much more compound and hunting-friendly. Basically all archery shops have hunting compounds and will often be geared primarily towards selling them. Compound bows tend to also just be expensive here, outside of secondhand and/or old models. As far as draw weight goes, most bows can adjust at least 10 pounds down from marked peak draw weight, some substantially more. If you buy a 60# bow, shooting 50# should probably be within your ability and you'll be able to turn it back up over time. Most hunting compounds will not come in anything less than 40-45#.

I'd suggest finding an archery pro shop for a start. That will help a great deal as far as seeking advice, buying and setting up gear. If you don't have any alternatives in terms of other clubs, I'd just get through the beginners course, join up, shoot enough to get a key to the targets and then shoot a compound as much as you like. If its an Archery Australia club (which target clubs usually are), a hunting compound is totally legal to shoot in target compound rounds.

Tried zapping up some arrows at 70 yards from a kneeling position to train up for this years hunting season. My max pin is 50 yards though so I had to aim were the red arrow is pointing. Pretty dang fun though.

I love recurves and 'traditional' (nothing traditional about it unless you think the 50's are 'traditional' which I guess is okay) archery but 99% of fedora trad archers suck ass at shooting and have such a low bar they set for themselves it's obscene. You could shoot better then them after like a week of practice. It's almost like they use their 'trad bows' as an excuse to be utter shit at archery.

Olympic archers obviously are good shots though. At least a lot of them are. Again, people set shitty low bars for themselves because they rely on input from those around them to decide what is 'good' and what is 'bad'.

Not in the east it isn't. Hunting from a stand is hunting from a fucking stand; the only meaningful difference between bow season and rifle season in most of the country is that in the latter your ethical range is the entire 80 yards of the shooting lane instead of just the first 45.

It's easier to isolate particular problems and fix them, and easier to upgrade since you can literally swap out heavier limbs and keep your existing everything else. Hell, it costs me $10 to upgrade my limbs, since the club swaps them out and on sells them to another member when they need it. It meant I could go 30 to 34 to 38lb for only the cost of one set.

It isn't when you are practicing every day and don't want to fuck up your tendons permanently. You can do a few shots with fingers then the rest with the trigger. That is more than enough to use only fingers while hunting.

Still I really don't recommend doing that. Your body and mind learn very quickly if you are actually interested in something. Join a club. Ask around. My suggestion is get something cheap and second hand and see if you even like it first. Plenty of clubs will have bows you can use if you don't have your own.

I honestly just used what my coach told me to use.

Depends how weak you are. Try drawing a bow at a shop and imagine doing it about 360 times. If it's difficult to draw, it's too heavy. You want something easily manageable so you can focus on form and consistency, rather than worrying about building up enough strength to make it through a couple of ends without tiring.

Personal preference.

I shot compound at targets for fun for years. Can't compete with it, but it's still fun.

This is used for LARPing, I am not even kidding, longbows are only ever used by real life LARPers. They have no advantage over any modern bow and are a pain to use.

These look better than compounds, are normally collapsible meaning you can hike with it in a pack and are easy to maintain and much cheaper, however when it comes to accuracy and draw they are normally outmatched by compounds.

These are for results, they may be expensive and hard to maintain but will give you the best accuracy for the least effort. You will get more hits on your target if you use one of these for hunting, their pulleys allow you to shoot higher draw weights for less effort to get clean kills.

That's state dependent now for crossbows, a lot of them (23?) have gone to "everybody can use a crossbow for the full duration of archery season" and a lot of other states have a late, "alt-methods" season that allows pretty much anything other than centerfire rifle (IE pistol, shotgun slug, muzzle loader, bow, crossbow, atl-atl, spear).

I find it absolutely hilarious that my home state specifies that we can use atl-atls, there's probably less than 300 people nation-wide that know how to use one at all and maybe a quarter of those that are actually good enough to hunt ethically with one.
