So I went hiking with a friend and found his knowledge of outdoors shit cool as fuck. now I'm curious if anyone here has a formal education on outdoors stuff and if you do where'd you get it? I'm specifically hoping for a certificate or associates program from an online school

how can you learn outdoor skills from an online school? its one thing to learn how to tie a knot in a book or at your desk its another to do it when your hands are so cold your knuckles ache.

there is some book stuff but.... its learning to swim without water. ya gotta be in it to really get it.

why not ask your friend to teach you? Thats the oldschool way of learning things, by asking someone who knows and doing it right on the spot. The internet and book stuff is cool and practical but the best way to learn something is still by asking and experience it yourself and not just watchin (I would be a freaking sexgod by now).

I was thinking like knowledge of plants, animals tracks, that sort of thing. Not like particularly hard things to grasp. Why can't outdoors stuff be taught online, I really don't see how it's any different than reading a book on it. Everyone starts somewhere.

also try some kids basci books. Its mostly kids or hunting books where you find good info about outdoor stuff. Some survival guides are good but theres a lot of shit you will never need to use in them too

if you have money and are on the west coast you can try NOLS OP. just go outside and hike and backpack, talk to park rangers about things and read maps and blogs, that's the best way to learn if you don't have a mentor.

My real job is /in/ as fuck, desk/lab job. Enjoy it, pays well, plenty of vacation time... which lets me do other things outside of work.

I'm also an avalanche educator, snow professional. Maintain instructor status, member of several snow/avalanche professional organizations. Seasonal job, doesn't pay for shit (covers most expenses, couple of sponsors that help me out with gear/equipment), but it gets me outside and keeps me in decent shape. Enjoy it, although the truck travelling gets old after a while.

Unless you are talking about biology, forestry or such thing, then there is no such thing as "formal education" on these topics.
Go out more, maybe with more experienced folks. Become experienced yourself. If you want to dig up on specific topics, read up and research the local plants, the local wildlife, keep a birdspotting book, that sort of thing.

Talk to your state DNR and see if they have any naturalist courses you can take. If not, go on nature walks with the rangers when they're offered

Got a certificate in outdoor rec. Most useful part was the technical skills for rock climbing and caving, but we also spent a bit of time whitewater kayaking and hiking.

You need to build a log book of experiences where you were in the lead or assisting to get a job in the industry, its not something you can do online. I did it over a year full time

Is this USA? My BTEC was 2 years in UK. We did the exact same subjects with a few off the cuff things like skiing and ghyll scrambling.
