What's best is when it's still bit onto the tail and you yank the fish clear out of the water. I've launched some dink greenies over my shoulder a few times and even smacked myself in the face with a pumpkinseed once doing that.

I haven’t had the issue with the flukes so much, it’s the lizards. I have some black & chartruese and these cotton candy chart lizards that constantly get chomped on by blugill and Mayans. And the Mayans are stronger than the little bluegill so a palm sized Mayan cichlid will make you think you got a 3lb bass grabbing it.

If someone is using lures and friendly and cool and the spot is the hotspot. I can tolerate up to 20-50 ft of the person knows what he is doing and alternating casting with me so the line wouldn’t cross. Just don’t cast where I cast or cast during middle of my retrieve so the line won’t cross. It’s common sense. If you are soaking bait with under size sinker and your line slowly drift across toward me, it’s not cool. It’s cool if your sinker can hold the spot so I can cast around it. I don’t like people who soak bait at a spot, cast 40ft one side, then let it drift like 100 ft to the other side after 10 min before picking it up and then cast again. It’s annoying if it’s a fairly small accessible spot and one person can take up a whole area doing that. Also, casting way out from a perpendicular shore and go across a bunch of people’s line of cast is also a dick move.

Trout fishing in South Central AK. Stocked lake. Wondering if trout nuggets work better than spinners. I use blue fox #1-2 for the most part. Sometimes a 1/8 rooster tail and this summer hasn't produced much. Suggestions?

Fair chase for fishing is different than for hunting. Ethical sport angling means attracting and inducing fish to voluntarily take a bait or lure so that it may be hooked on the mouth. To this end, chumming serves no more unethical purpose in attracting fish to your hook than does live bait on the hook itself or any other type of artificial attractants such as flies, chemicals, etc.

This is why snagging is not sporting and, in some places, actually an illegal method of taking fish. The only way I would consider chumming unsportsmanlike is if you are bow fishing. Bow fishing is not angling, you're not goading a fish into taking a bait. You're literally hunting and analogous to deer baiting in this case.

In some places chumming is banned because more nutrient in the water that doesn't get eaten means toxic algae blooms. In other places it's because they don't want sharks to associate feeding with humans. It's not about sporting consideration. So if you chum, do so responsibly.

I mean it's a bit of an ass thing to do at a popular spot. Everyone would be closer together except for that one guy who has 200 ft of the shoreline for himself. However, he technically wouldn't be in the wrong if he was there first. Sometimes, I thought that a person is soaking bait with good enough sinker so move in a spot. Then a few min later the bait drift all the way into where I am so I just move. I have not cast into anyone line. Sometimes, I do move a bit too close to other people but usually I do it to cast way on the other side and get the retrieve angle I want and there was no way of my line crossing the other person. I don't mind people fishing close to me as long as there's no chance of crossing line. Sometimes, a whole half a mile to a mile of beach or inlet/jetty has only 100-200 ft of area that actually produces so I would understand if a person tries to get the fish on in a spot that is hot and if they can do it without crossing my line then it's fine. I do know the frustrating feeling of making the drive, paying for parking, then walking half a mile on the sand to scout and finally find a good spot with structure and bait fishes, just to see it being too populated by surfer, swimmer, or fishermen. It's just common sense with fishing sometimes. Just don't cross into other people's line.

What really stands out, especally for West Coast fags in here, are the LC flashminnow also being on sale. You'll never ever find these shit on sale due to Lucky Craft price control on these thing. This is a major break so take advantage to stock up on it. The colors on sale are also really good colors too. East Coast fags are welcome to join in the magic of the LC flashminnow meme but I heard while it works really well to catch fish and outfishes mostly everything, it isn't quite durable enough to deal with the more stronger and bigger fishes in the salt of east coast.

Yea my first legal halibut was on an LC flashminnow too. I already have 2 and I ended up buying 3 more because of the sale to stock up in case I lose them. Surf pointer is also pretty good and cheaper than the flashminnow as well but it's not quite the flashminnow.
I live in NOC but i go to san diego once in a while to visit my friend and cousin living there. What are some good places for halibut there beach and bay wise. I fished once in SD at shetler island and only got some spotties. Kinda jealous that you guys have a huge san diego bay and mission bay next to each other with a lot of access and free parking.

there's halibut everywhere in the bay, what I've felt fishing for them is that there is techniques that maximize your chances, but its also a luck of the draw thing, like I may catch 15 perch on a flashminnow fishing the surf before I catch a halibut.

For bay and inlet, it's mostly about finding
nice sandy area with some structure like grass, rock, or bridge around it. You don't want to throw into directly into grass and rock. I walked around Shelter Island a bit to find a good sandy clearing dragging a dropshot set up around to feel the bottom but I haven't find a major one yet. It's just lot of grass bed there so far which houses plenty of bass.
For the surf, halibut likes the deep trough next to the sand bar while other species can be on the flats. However, other species also like the trough so you'll definitely can have get hit by a bunch of shit throwing LC into trough. On the beach I fish at, it's yellow fin croakers. The ones hitting the LC are also fat 15-16 inches one that fight as almost hard as a barely legal halibut. They get hooked up like every other casts once a school of them run by. Nightmare mode are the batray that get snagged. Light tackle can't handle those shit that get big enough

my uncle fishes 30# now, he's hooked into multiple big rays and had one that was pushing 100# once

but yeah that part of the bay tends to be grassy, finding the sandy pockets is key, but so is finding rocks.

back bay is where its at

I don't exactly know how cod behave with that much traffic, but people always catch fish in even the busiest harbours so I guess most fish don't care.
And yes at the right time of day cod will go into the shallow parts of the water closer to land.

Also from what I can tell the beaches near Ystad seem to be pretty good for fishing for sea trout

I know here in PA we use marabou jigs for smallmouth, and I assume bucktail jigs can be fished the same way. A lot of guys like to thread a small (3”-4”) straight tail worm on the back of em. Like a Finesse TRD from Z Man, or a cut down finesse worm. Maybe even a Tiny Fluke if they’re white/grey. We mostly use them in the colder months, though.

I started with one ugly stik I used for soaking cut bait off piers when I got to North Carolina. I gradually increased my quiver of rods as I got more serious about fishing and needed different rods to suit different lures and techniques. Get more as you need them. It's fine to start small. I just started making my own recently too.

It's hard to target everything from bluegill to big catfish with one rod. You could probably get away with something like a medium heavy rod and tie different leaders on depending on the application, from 6# up to 30# leaders tied to 10 or #15 pound braid, in theory.

I was under the impression I was supposed to drop the big money on a reel and get a decent rod. Fresh, cast it like you would a punching rig or rip it up and down vertically above structure or along rip rap.

Put a blade on it and use it like a spinner bait as well.

Salt. Use a berkley gulp trailer and bottom bounce it or fish it bare like a butterfly jig vertically over structure ripping up and down.

depends on the type of tourney/derby
do you have a boat or kayak? there are shore based tourneys and a lot of tourneys allow shore based anglers to also compete but your at a significant disadvantage. tourney fees vary.

this picture is of a tournament fishers bass. he's a cheater that was recently caught. he won a lot of tourneys and took home a lot of cash and prizes. he cut off the tail of a fish, held it in his hand and used it to cheat the trough measurement adding a small amount of length to every fish. theres lots of cash and prizes to win in some tourneys and some people are willing to put it all on the line to win. dont be that guy. good luck

I've been looking at ways to get out on the water that are portable (able to fit in a sedan at the least). I've been looking at inflatables and tubes, leaning towards pontoon boats. tubes are a lot of work.
pontoon is great. (with a trolling motor)

its up to you and how much effort you want to exert. all of them ride high and are greatly effected by winds. current not so much. you can add a trolling motor to each but pontoons are the better ride motorized. pontoons have external frames so you need to deal with that also. I've had all of them, sold the kayak, gave away the tube, kept the sea eagle pontoon.
I'm seriously considering getting a goboat for shits and giggles. theyre around $300 so pretty cheap and it packs up small. thinking itll work well for quick trips when i dont want to tow my boat or haul my kayak. you can standup fish them, cruise around on them and they look fun so my kid can play with it too.

they're very common in brackish waters for salmon. google flying c. I use one in front of a swimbait and have had some success with it in the bays, got one pretzeled from a striper..maybe that's why they're not so used? also some of the parts just rust in salt water.

I don't feel like I've accomplished anything. I catch fish all the time but the fish I catch are on lures like inline spinners, curly grubs and floating minnows that require little to no action from me and I can just straight retrieve. I've caught the occasional bass on a frog popper but I still struggle with maintaining line tension in between jerking the topwater in case of a strike.

Yes some larger fish could crush a lot of smaller mepps spinners but they make large pike and musky ones that would work fine.

So I've gotten pretty good at catching dinks in wide open lakes with no vegetation. However, there this other lake I fish that has a ton of vegetation and it's almost a miracle if I can catch a bass there, dink or not.

I've been using dropshot rig for everything so far. With a combination of different retrieve speeds and sinker weights, I can pretty much target the whole column. Should I use a different strategy for the heavy vegetation lake? I'm not sure what to use.

Where am I supposed to dispose of carp if I catch a bunch of them? From what I gather, it's illegal to put them in any public land. A bunch of forums just say "bury them In your garden for fertilizer" I live in an apartment, with no way for a garden. and if I threw them in the dumpster it would stink for a half mile. FML. I didn't notice that one side of the street has a different street sweeping date that the other one. I was heading down the road and notices that street sweep sign say no parking on thursday. I found a parking spot on the other side, made a u-turn and parked there, and but on that side no parking is on friday. Does anyone have any tips for surf fishing sharks?
I have had an obsession with sharks ever since I was about 12 years old and I’ve been surf fishing them every chance I could get since then, but never had much luck. I’m 21 now, so that should speak to how much I suck. I’ve caught big rays, small hammerheads, small duskys, etc, but never hooked up on the 5-6 footer that I want. I sometimes feel like my bait isn’t far enough out, even though I’m using a 14 foot surf rod to heave it out across the breakers.
What baits do you guys use, and what style of rig? I’m currently using 60lb mono with a 400lb leader and a 6ought hook with a bigger size Sputnik style weight.

I have a UL tackle box that is nothing but 30+ #0 and #1 Mepps and Blue Fox, with the exception of 4 Rapala UL minnows, I use it for camping, but keep it behind the seat in my truck so I can fish at a whim whenever I'm not pressed for time.

I catch everything from trout to panfish to walleye and northerns. Best fish ever on that kit was a 3 lb pike on a Mepps #0 in orange on the lower Namakogan

Mepps are a comfy lure to throw when you don’t really care what you catch, you just want to catch somthing. I’ve never not caught fish on mepps. My fathers number one lure of all time to this day is still a number 4 red and white blade with a squirrel tail treble. He’s caught more pike on that lure alone then I’ve caught my whole life.

A kayak serves can more fishing than just being a bait transport for shark fishing.

Is there any point in using rollers over normal guides on anything except the heaviest boat rods? I would assume that they affect your casting distance pretty negatively with all that surface contact so they wouldn't be any good for shore rods.

Well, it's just that durability is a meme in modern day because you shouldn't snap a decent rod if you know what you are doing. Modern drag system are good enough that you shouldn't be snapping a rod while fighting a fish unless it's a mistake. Biggest mistake that people consistently do, even for people who has been fishing for a while, is high sticking. People simply don't pay attention while landing a fish. People also can high stick during a hook set because they don't reel in the line before hook set and/or keep a rod low but make hard hook set while the rod is already held at a high angle. Also, a door slam on the tip would kill even an ugly stick. Then, there are people casting with the weight right near the tip of the rod and also do a really hard flick at the same tie. Perhaps, having a high durability rod like ugly stik keep people from actually learn how to use a rod properly. People stick to ugly stik because they don't know what they are doing wrong and just assume that other rods are shit and ugly stik is the only good rod because it's the only rod that can handle their abuse and mistake.
Of course, there are shitty rods out there that also break even without human's mistake. There are also some role that ugly stik can perform well on such as soaking bait. I'm not saying that every rod is perfect. However, sacrifice performance over durability is not that worth it in the long run.

Got a few spinners in my saltybox myself.
The corrosion issue can largely be fixed by using the proper materials. Fish size in salt vs. fresh depends on where you are fishing I guess. And you could always make a spinner from sturdier components.
My best guess is habit and culture.
Many of the rigs and methods I see you guys using for eg. bass in ponds look like they would work equally well for sea trout on the coast here in Denmark but I suppose due to cultural differences I've never seen anybody using something even similar.

At the same time, I despise feral animals. They're a bane to wild populations. Escaped domesticated cats have wiped out some areas' local songbird populations. This even applies to 'outside' cats who go home in the evening, but their owners let them roam.

Cats should be kept indoors, and should almost all be sterilized.

I do not agree with his method of dispatching the animals, but at the same time, he's taking care of a pest animal.

People really need to find the means to separate their sympathies from pets versus pests.

i've caught fish on glowing lures before. my theory on this is that certain animals key in in specific features to decide what is real and not. i call them the "key features"
on bugs it could be wings, segmentation, legs, etc, minnows i think it;s profile and eyes, and sometimes it's just "flashy move-y thing"
take a spinner for example, the part with the skirt can be vaguely interprated as baitfish shape, and if it has eyes painted on, then all the more. then tack on the flash of the blade getting the fish's attention and making it feel like a fish swimming. a certain amount of takes could be due to curiosity (i mean, if a fish is unsure of what something is, the only way to touch it is with a mouth)
basically, fish decide on what food is in the same way a child would decide that pic related is a monster. it doesn't look like anything they can think of but the "eyes" "arm" "head" and "body" are key features that can make a brain decide that something is a threat, and those same things can make a brain decide that something is food.

lets just assume equal weight and casting distance, you're going to change the action. a straight steady retrieve is going to look about the same, but if you take a pause the floating one is going to float and the sinking one might pause and sit there or slowly sink during the pause. theoretically the sinking one will also fish deep water better just because you can stand there waiting for it to sink as long as you want between jerks

Went on a charter fishing trip with my fiancé and her parents yesterday morning for a few hours and had a blast fishing for triple tail and red drum. So I'm somewhat new to this and I've learned a lot from watching on youtube.
something that was strange was that you americans seem to be able to buy big bags of crushed ice pretty much everywhere.
I have never seen that in my country and have asked around and nope no luck except some places that have offered to sell dry ice so i have had to make due with 4 of these freezer packs.
But it's far from optimal, really only the fish that is directly in contact with the freezer pack will actually get chilled.
What is the alternative? I tried stacking 10 ice cube trays in the freezer but it wasn't nearly enough ice and by the time I got home it had all melted.
I guess I could just throw a big ass pot of water into the freezer and then smash it into pieces but that doesn't seem sanitary because I'd be scooping up dirt and stuff off the floor with the ice.
help?

Fill a big thick plastic bag (or several) and chuck them in the freezer, run lukewarm water over them to make the ice release the from the plastic and then just gently tap them until they are crushed.
Store the crushed ice in the plastic bags inside your cooler until you need the ice.

I'm from Sweden and I don't think I have ever seen bags of ice being sold. But then again we have 4 seasons with proper winters, maybe it's hard to find bags of ice up in Minnesota or something?

Went out and built a catfish/carp spinning rod yesterday. Nothing fancy. 6'6 ugly stick with an Okuma stratus reel and 10 pound test mono. I'm having some issues with the retrieve. It thumps hard when reeling it back to shore. None of my other spinning rods do this and they all retrieve smoothly. My best guess is that it's the line I'm using. The reel can take up to 150 yards of 10 pound test. Pretty sure I put too much on. Before I cut some line off, what could be causing this? Every turn of the handle makes the rod tip bounce and I feel my bait thumping hard even though I'm just tossing 1/2 ounce texas rigs on it

Depending on the state, it depends. My state has stand your ground laws, meaning you aren't required to get away if someone threatens your life. You can use lethal force if the person has shown intent/a weapon. Them pulling up in a boat with knives trying to rob you would be completely justified for a shooting

If you can't have a gun where you're at, there is a lot of improvised weapons you can disguise as fishing equipment. Even just a simple wood pole is a good defense against short weapons like knives

It roots back to the days of 'ice boxes,' the precursor to refrigerators. We had shipments of ice brought in from the very far north, by train. It was cut into blocks, and stored in ice houses.

When refrigeration became a thing -- inefficient ammonia coolant before Freon -- we started making our own.

But most people didn't have the luxury of electricity, so the people who could afford an ice box -- a large vertical insulated cooler -- purchased blocks of ice to keep food colder, longer.

Thanks to the wide availability of ice, we added it to drinks quite readily. It's why the US is so well-known for putting ice into everything, including people in other countries making jokes that we put ice into beer and wine.

We became so spoiled by having ice, that a lot of people even now refuse to drink anything that's not hot coffee or ice-cold, and hardly anything at all that isn't insanely sweet. But that's another story. Early refrigerators, of course, did not have ice makers. And we could no longer tolerate warm foods on picnics (practiced since before the word was invented). So what did we do? We found a way to bring cold food: Miniature ice boxes.

This lead to a ready availability of ice as a norm.
