How's the hunting going /out/?

I've been finding boxloads of Chanterelles in Rockcreek Park DC (MD side) with the local mycological meetups.
I think I've gotten confident to ID Morels, Chanterelles, lions mane and Giant puffballs. I don't want to mess with the Ammo toxin look a like caps.

Also general mushroom ID thread.

The guide had cooked up this mushroom which I'm still kicking myself over not remembering the actual species other than I heard it being called the Bread loaf mushroom. It was pretty good tasting too.
Also I wish these forays didn't get inundated with throngs of normies, then again there were some nice qts.

Awesome I was about 5 minutes from making a thread asking how chanterelle hunting was going for people. I like in Northern Virginia and I've been wondering if it's been warm enough to drive out to West Virginia and go looking, if they're popping up in DC then it's probably only a couple weeks away. Don't know if I'd enjoy Rock Creek, I prefer a little more seclusion. Seen any of the shitty lookalikes (jack o'lantern, false chanterelle) yet?

Hate to say it but you might have more luck on an ID on the reddit mycology page, it moves a little quicker and it's obviously more focused than /out/. Shroomery is okay too, I like the users more, but it's mostly focused on magic mushrooms. The edible and medicinal forum is relatively quick though and the people there know their shit.

protip: cut off the bottom of the stem immediately when you harvest them. This lets you know how many bugs, if any, are already in the chanterelle, and gets rid of the dirtiest part that would normally roll around in your bag spreading dirt to the caps.

Also watch out for these guys and poison ivy.

I sincerely hope OP doesn't think any of those mushrooms are genus Cantharellus.

If so, enjoy that liver transplant waiting list. Don't worry, though, shit will keep chugging along a few months until your belly starts to swell and the whites of your eyes turn the color of those mushrooms.

I know I was in a hurry to pick them since we had a regroup soon. I cut the ends off when I got them out to ID em. That wasn't even the full batch I got, there was a good 6 pounds coming back and forth.

Not sure if you are a retard, summerfag or both. There's only a few species that resemble Chantharellus like Jack O' Lanterns while poisonous is not lethal (although you will have the shits). That and said lookalike mushrooms tend not to grow directly on the soil and have features not present on chanterelles like true gills.

One must question your expertise when you are unable to even properly spell the genus name, much less identify by species. That said, good luck in your ventures for as long as they last. That geographic area is not one in which I'd take chances, given the relative mycological diversity there.

I would say most people who pick wild mushrooms for consumption are unaware of mycological nomenclature. This isn't to speak of pre-Linnaean days either.

Far north California checking in. We're just starting to see the first fog drip chanterelles and hedgehogs. Probably a month until we start getting lobsters. Made a trip inland to mt. Shasta a few weeks ago to pick spring kings and morels (M. snyderi, M. tridentina), but those are finished now except at extreme elevation.

I've heard from Alan Rockefeller and others that the east coast chanterelles have much better flavor than the West coast chanterelles. Has any had both and care to comment?

I haven't kept up with the literature, but like many other taxa, the chanterelles are turning out to be species complexes. I've noticed that chanterelles in northeastern N. America tend to be recalcitrant and resist decay and insects for a long time, while in other areas they are like most other mushrooms. I'm sure there are differences in tastes for these so-called cryptic species.

Hydnum just got a lot more interesting. A recent paper just described 20+ new species including cryptic ones from N. America which are morphologically difficult to distinguish;

UK here, chanterelles have started popping up now, just need to wait for some good rain every couple of days to really get them going. Check out this decent Cep I found in France last year

Another Virginian checking in from North of Richmond. I've seen chants popping up in places I've never seen them before so I've been happy. The place I like to go had more golds than usual, typically the cinnabars are everywhere but I haven't come across many yet.

There is basically no different between cutting vs. pulling. The mycelial network of these mycorrhizal species is very, very extensive and picking mushrooms basically does nothing. They are modular colonial organisms.

I'm not sure who started spreading the cutting meme but it is based on pseudo-science. It does help with preventing your mushrooms from getting covered in soil and organic matter once they go in your basket though. But in some cases, for example with Amanita, you want to almost dig the mushroom stipe out to look for specific characters.

The real truth is anywhere, well sorta. The mushrooms that are worth eating are found in symboitic relationship to certain tree. For example near oak, and tulip trees for morels and Chanterelles. So old forest is generally good. But it's not always the case you need to be innawoods. I've found edibles in urban/unatural parks and suburbs.

Generally spots that wet but yet have good drainage and mature substrate. Recent burn spots are good too.

The large yellow pores, red stem, and scaly. cracked top are good characters. If that was in E. N. America I'd say it could be Xerocomus chrysenteron. The Boletales can be quite host specific, so make note of which trees are nearby, because that can help narrow down the ID.

One time I was walking in a spruce-fir forest and spotted a Suillus grevillei mushroom. As far as I knew, there was no larch around. After a minute or two I found a single larch about 60 ft away from the mushroom, clearly associate with the roots of that one tree. I've had this happen a few times, where the mushroom tells me that the host is in the forest stand instead of the other way around.

I am a professional mycologist who has published over two dozen papers, the majority of which are related to taxonomy and nomenclature. Correlating typos/spelling and a grasp of Linnaean taxonomy with the ability to distinguish edible mushrooms is absurd.
