What do you guys think about Esbit stoves?
Inexpensive, lightweight, and simple, but they leave black gunk on the bottom of your cookware. An aluminum foil barrier between the tablet and cookware does remedy that, though.

And another con, the Esbit tablets have a strong fishy smell that lingers. Probably not the best thing for bear country. Supposedly Coghlan's tablets don't have that odour.

Esbit is shit. They stink, they ruin pots, and they are a certain minutes of flame. No turning them of or on.

Carrying an esbit cube or two isn't a bad idea. They can boil a can of water. But if you want to cook in the woods esbit is retard tier.

I feel if youre going to dirty your pots with soot you might as well just build a wood fire and get a lightweight twig stove or stand. But nothing wrong with carrying a couple tablets for emergencies or the rain

Never dealt with Esbit, seem like a pretty good deal if you're in an area where you're not able to have a fire (weather, terrain, laws, etc). Generally if I'm cooking while /out/ I'll just do a smaller open fire, but I usually bring a sterno stove on overnights, just in case. (shit only adds like 1.5lbs with two cans and the folding stove)

If you soap up the bottom of ypur pots they shouldn't get sooty. We cooked over a woodfire without doing this on a Scouting trip and got in a bunch of trouble.

Saw a kid and a dog burning without visible flames on a campsite once. Kid was flown out bei helo - dog was running around with it's fur disappearing and screaming.

Thats why i dislike spirit cookers. Guess they're alright if it's adults only while being out.

esbit/hexamine to my experience is alright for boiling the odd cup of water, but it smells like arse and costs a lot for what it is. The stove thing is cheap, once you have that you're better off making an alcohol stove out of pop cans and using the stove with that little burner.

The butane/propane mix stoves are good too, the jet boil being the super deluxe one, but it's a bit of cash to get in.

That being said though, hexamine tabs to absolutely work and do their job decently and lightly, I just find that alcohol is better for me.

We (wife, me, and two friends) just spent a week camping with a solo stove and I gotta say, that thing was awesome. Yeah it took a bit to boil up 3-4 cups of water for the bigger meals, but for small meals, 1-2 cups, it would boil in less than 4 minutes. We were using small bits of pine but it was great for its size.

We were taught how to use them in pre-school and school where I live.

Stockholm, Sweden. We did camping trips every year to a semi-local place. Cooked using spirit cookers and after 3rd grade (I think) we got to sleep in tents and stuff.

i would say upgrading to gas is worth it, faster boil. way easier cleanup, and all the advantages/disadvantages from not carrying liquid fuel. remember to mix some water in you denatured alcohol to cut down on soot

What's the advantage of this over something like a Jet Boil? Not sure about esbit, but jet boils last a long time.

I carry one to make coffee or tea exclusively. That way if I’m just taking a break I don’t have to unpack or start a fire.
