Yeah, you just use heavier sinkers. It's rigged up largely the same though. I've rigged soft plastic shrimp and jerk shads on a drop shot before with success.

I'm in the central midwestern USA and I remember fishing when I was a little kid and Id like to get back into fishing. Do I need to get a boat in order to fish or can you catch decent walleye off a pier or a shore on the lake or river?

Does 3/4oz fill the role of heavy enough while still having more finesse?

It depends on the current and swell. You can get away with pretty heavy weight in the salt for dropshot. 1 oz is pretty normal weight as well.

I use anything from 1/2 to 1oz personally for sinkers. Get some 1/0 circle hooks. I prefer circle hooks to anything else desu.

Going on my first ever fishing trip in like two hours. Online research says theres bullhead catfish in the river I found. Its pretty murky so I got a random fishing rod and some medium sized hooks and night crawlers and basic stuff. Wish me luck lol

bass pro is alright. i suggest an ugly stick combo, they're usually pretty cheap and if you're just getting back into it then you want cheap over super quality. better to break 40 dollar rod and reel combo while learning than 400. just remember to use quality line and always use a swivel. cheap lures too as you will loose allot while learning.

Not really necessary. I’m assuming your worried about bending out a hook? If that’s he case it shouldn’t be a worry. As long as you have your drag set right you should never ever be bending out hooked unless you are physically trying to. I’ve had 30lb braid spooled on my 2500 size spinning reel for the 3 years I’ve owned it and it’s never been an issue

Are there any lure manufacturers which you would replace the hooks on by default or do most mainline brands ship with good enough hooks? Are single hooks on plugs and jerkbaits actually a good idea, anyone have experience missing hookups because of them?

Almost all Heddon brand lures have really shit hooks from what I’ve seen. You can usually tell just by looking at it if the hooks are decent or not. The cheap hooks always seem to be that light grey/silver color. Not to say every hook that color is shit but the ones that are shit are usually that color.

Mustad cheapos bend really easily. Earlier this spring a ~4lb bass pretzeled a brand new 2x 4/0 flipping hook of theirs. Still landed it but the rest of the hooks went in the trash.

They also rust really easy, even compared to Eagle Claws. Their premium lines are fine tho.

Critique my carp setup. Size 8 treble hook. Pack some bread on it or corn. 20# flouro leader, about 12 inches to a barrel swivel. Clip a 1 to 3 ounce lead direct to the swivel. Up to main line 30# braid.

I want the simplest, easiest bolt rig so that it's pretty much impossible for me to miss a hook-up. I hate tying hair rigs and I feel a quality treble hook will always stick the carp somewhere and cause it to bolt.

How would this rig most likely fail me?

Rod #2 is drying as we speak. Will be done in the morning. Learned my mystakes on the first one and this one came out a lot cleaner looking as a result. Hopefully I can stick a fat walleye or two come Wednesday when I test it out.

I caught my first big fat fucking fish. I was just fishing for dinks on my ultralight rod when suddenly this 18 inch beast gets on the hook. The drag went off like crazy, I was scared, thought I'd never pull it in. But gradually its bursts got weaker and weaker and I was able to very slowly pull it in. I had 4lb leader didn't want overdo the drag, so I gently pinched the line itself so I could get a better feel for the kind of drag I thought would be safe on the line. Bless the rod for not snapping, fiberglass saved my life.

However, it's a little bittersweet because it was hook on the outside of its mouth, so I'm thinking it was just a very lucky snag. I don't like snagging fish. It's not very sporting.

Johnson Silver Minnows

Spinner baits in white, green, or a mix of both. Add a white Mr Twister to attract the biggest pike and bass. I also suggest using a wire leader.

So my first attempt at making my own crushed ice worked pretty well. I threw in a big mixing bowl full of water and then waited for it to freeze enough that the outside was ice but the inside still liquid so it would be possible to smash without using a sledgehammer. Broke it up into bigger chunks then threw the bigger chunks into a towel and pounded it with a meat mallet until it was what I think would be normal size for fishing purposes. Threw it all into a plastic bag and back into the freezer. I am worried that the crushed ice will solidify into one giant chunk again, I did my best to drain as much water from the ice bag as possible but it still felt a little bit like slush in the bottom. It gave me about ~4kg or 8lb of crushed ice, a second batch is on the way.
It's a pretty small (and bad) cooler so I think when the second batch is done I think I will be able to fill the entire thing with ice.
I didn't add any salt, mistake?

What size circle hook were you using? Also what kind of bait? Looks like you are using a really small bait judging by the size of the fish and it being able to swallow it. Use a 6/0 circle hook with live bluegill or a large bluegill's head. That's my rig and I've never gut hooked a catfish because the smaller ones can't even get the bait in their mouth.

No. Circle hooks are made so the fish sets the hook and the only way to get it out is to twist it out. If it's guthooked that hook will be there until the fish dies. On larger catfish it's not that big of a deal, but on smaller ones it will kill it.

Circle hook isn’t gut hook proof, just resistance. You can get away with pretty big circle hook for cat fish because catfish has big mouth and isn’t shy. As long as the hook is in the fish mouth, they’ll get hook as they turn and swim away with the hook and put pressure on the line.

Put a circle hook on about a foot of line. Drape the hook over your hand and SLOWLY pull the line down to the ground. You can watch as the hook turns and sets its point into your hand (stop fucking pulling that was as far as you need to go to see it). This will teach you how the hook works. If you are man enough to try it then do not slowly pull but jerk it as if setting a hook and 60% of the time it fails every time.

Well, I wasn’t exactly fishing for catfish. I used half of a live worms on that line I think it was a four or a six hook. All the rest of my catches that day we’re fine, even the catfish I caught later. Should I at least be reeling in a little when I get a bite? I heard even doing that would make you lose the fish.

I don't think your drag being tight was the reason. It was your bait. The smaller the bait=the higher the chance for a fish to be guthooked. The want that sweetspot where your bait is a tad bit smaller than the fish's mouth.

Can you tell a good pond from a bad one just by satellite? It's size or anything to look for that'd be visible from space?
I looked on google satellite and found one that's pretty out of the way not too terribly far from my house, pretty deep in the woods, and accessible by a relatively cleared area (it's a clearing the government made to put a road in, but never actually made the road)
But I can't tell if there are even any streams leading in or out of it because the forest is so dense other than that clearing, and it is a fairly long hike for my fat ass.

$25 might sound like a lot of money for supplies to buy leaders, but this will give you everything you need for 80-100 leaders. consider that $24 will only get you about 6 pre made leaders and you can see how much money you're saving by tying your own. each leader will probably take about 5 minutes but i usually just sit at the computer watching youtube casually cranking out leaders. fold some paper around them and tape it shut, lable it with the length of the leader, and what it is (say, "7 foot 10 lb" for bass or "9 foot 5x" for panfish) and you can have plenty of leaders on hand for a long time

Good price, but FK or CI4+?
FK is outclassed by the Tatula LT.
CI4+ is outclassed by the Ballistic LT and nearly matched by the Tatula LT.
It's a good reel either way, but Daiwa has been doing great because they're very smooth, incredibly light, and they got rid of the elbow joint on the reel handle.
The bails are light but very sturdy and need extra force to close them, but you should be closing the bail with your hand on every reel anyways.

Probably because they didn't get their shit together until very recently.
The Ballistic LT and Tatula LT aren't very old, and I imagine not many people want to make a $190-$230 investment into a company they might not like.
For saltwater plenty of people know that Daiwa has good shit. The BG is one of best if not the best $100 salt reel, and the Saltist Back Bay LT uses a lot of the same components as the Saltiga making it a steal. Tackle Advisors has even said it's smoother than his Stella.
To be concise I'd say it's because Shimano has a much stronger presence and following for spinning reels.

Update I finished the second batch this morning just in time for the fishing trip. My "cooler" is literally a Styrofoam box 1 inch thick with a shitty lid that doesn't seal properly at all.
Packed it to the top with the bags of crushed ice and it then sat for 8 hours in a hot car on a sunny day while I was out fishing on the pier, the ice had barely melted at all when I got home.
I saw a school of 5 big cods swimming right below me, they just went up and looked at my lure and then continued swimming.
They came to visit me 8 times over the span of an hour and every time I tried a different lure but nope they refused to bite.
Feels bad man that's the closest I've ever been to catching something, they were so close and chill that if I was quick enough I feel I could've scooped them up in a landing net.
Now I've got a proper backlash to sort out on the baitcaster. Learning is hard mayne.

I definitely second making your own leaders. Buying pre-tapered leaders is fine in certain instances is fine such as if you stop by a fly shop and pick some up in a pinch on your way to a trout stream. Even still, the leaders you'll tie up for panfish can work just fine for fishing for trout.

Took the medium light rod I built a couple days ago out for the first time. First fish I hooked was the biggest pickerel I think I’ve ever caught. Measured 28 inches. Rod performed better than I expected. Overall a good day on the water

I'm not sure if baitcasters are for me brehs I think I'm too much of a brainlet.
Heavy lures are no problem but when I get down to ~12 gram then I start getting backlashes quite often.
All the conflicting "guides" is a pain in the ass too. Some say you need to cast smoothy with your whole body, some say you need to use the rod like a whip. Some say you should cast more parallel to the water than what you would with a spinning reel. Some say you should have your thumb off the spool and only touch it right before the lure hits the water some say you should have light pressure with your thumb the whole time. Some say you can only cast light lures with a low profile baitcaster (mine is a big ol round one). Some say the stretching properties of mono is inductive for backlashes some say clearing a backlash with braided is almost impossible...

I'm all for experimenting but wasting 10 minutes picking at a backlash everytime I make a misake while watching fish swim by is painful.
However shit I am at baitcasters when it does work I'm having more fun with them and it just feeeeels better and more natural and I don't miss having a sore index finger after a day of swinging heavy lures.

Not really asking for advice or anything, just frustrated after growing up seeing my dad with a baitcaster and he never fucking ever got a backlash and he could drop those lures wherever he pleased making it look so easy.

the thing about that is a round bait caster will always have more issue with a lighter bait than a low profile one. 12 grams is probably the lightest i would ever try to cast with a round bait caster. also about your dad never getting a backlash: he had more backlashes with that reel of his than the number of casts you've attempted with your reel. he went through all the same growing pains, and he had all the same difficulties. personally i find birds nests in braid to be the easiest to pick out. just keep playing around with it and you'll get it eventually. also make sure all your drags are adjusted properly, when casting light things you should be able to freespool the lure and have it slowly fall to the ground and then stop without a backlash

Use the heaviest rated braid for your reel. Don't go lighter than 1/4 ounce. If you want to cast lighter lures then get a spinning rod. Make sure to adjust your breaking system for every lure. I think my only backlash in the last 4 years was when a topwater frog I was mid cast broke off because the eye was worn out. As for the cast, just do you. You can whip it/cast smoothly/pitch it/toss it whatever. It becomes second nature after a while

Caught my first fish on my first fishing trip.
Some bullhead catfish and some medium sized silver fish I honestly cant, identify pic related. It gave me a lot of joy. What I believe to be a carp jumped and caused my knot to come untied so obviously i need to tie better knots. I love u guys.

Been working on setting up my Harley to go fuck around inna north of Canada to shore and river fish. Just tie the hook to the mainline. Having the tag end seems like it would be better but all that ends up happening is the tag wraps itself around the mainline. Having that tag end of line also makes it a little more difficult to feel, and set the hook depending on the water you are fishin

People who are fishing usually keep their distance.
I go to a local neighborhood pond fairly often and it's heavily pressured, but I still slay there. I've noticed people will pack up and leave when I start catching fish. This seems counterintuitive to me because if I see a guy catch fish then I'd want to stay because a feed might start or something.

Canada has weird regulations here on live bait. Ontario? I can catch or buy live minnows all day long to fish with. Alberta and Saskatchewan? Only thing live I can use is dirty leeches and worms. All minnows sold are frozen which I fuckin can't stand. Mind you the fishing in AB/SK is FUCKING HORRIBLE compared to glorious Northern Ontario. Out here in AB/SK they fish purposefully for those rotten slough-sharks they call jackfish here (They're Northern pike) and happily eat the slimy cunts. Walleye here isn't a big deal where as in Ontario we reel in monster pike but throw them back unless it's exceptionally huge because we're after those delicious delicious big fat walleyes. i've tried the double hook drop shot, and I've used sabiki rigs. For presentation, I wouldn't know how to tell the difference. Drop shots catches fish, so not having a branched-off hook doesn't seem to be a problem.

Branched hooks might have the added problem of tangling with the mainline.

Here in the states people don’t give fuck all about lake trout. We have plenty of places to fish for them around here but no one really does. Walleye are the single most targeted species by far. The fagbook group I’m in for my local lake has 12k memebers and the only thing those faggot boomers care about is walleye.

I also go up to Quebec every year for a fishing trip to different lakes around the Kipawa area. Every single time we meet another group, they are after walleye and that’s it.

I mean if you already have a decent size cooler, there’s no reason to bring a bucket over the cooler, especially if your cooler has wheels. Just put ice in there and close the top. Throw The fishes you want to keep in there.
If you want the fishes to not suffer or w/e, bonk the fish in the head, cut the gill and the end of the tail to bleed the fish completely, then throw it in your cooler. As long as there’s a good amount of ice in the cooler, the fishes should stay fresh. Drain the cooler once in a while if there’s a lot of blood building up inside the cooler.

Nah rather tie that to the back of my sissybar, it's a dyna so anything up front that could wobble will add to it going batshit all over the road. The windshield is pretty rank in a crosswind already. I just feel like there's no need for a 12' rod with this kinda setup. This was my loadout last time I just went camping with it. A shitty $40 tent, 2 mexican blankets, 2 sleeping bags, my cowboy hat and a set of leather saddlebags that held 32 cans of american vintage hard iced tea. Honestly the worst thing you can do is improperly freezing them if you plan to not eat them within a month. A good quality vacuum sealer has been my favorite tool for hunting and fishing for years. I have 60 lbs of ground deer vacuum sealed in 1lb portions setting next to fillets of fish in my deep freezer.

I will have to research this as I have always been told to drain the water. I normally crack the drain plug on week+ trips and let the water drip into my dogs water bowl. Just went fishing last week and caught some glorious slimy slough-sharks. At them up and it was delicious.

The big ones aren't that bad to clean, but anything smaller than ~5lbs is a pain in the ass but still tastes fucking great once you get it sorted.

I buy briskets on sale when I find them as I am the pit master for my family events. So I normally have 10 or more briskets on top of 80lbs of ground deer, 100lbs of deer sausage, 50lbs of ground hog, and then what ever fish I catch. By the end of January it is packed full as well as the freezer of my fridge. I also hand out packages of sausage and ground meat to friends and co-workers (this is why I always get the biggest raise% and best gifts) as well as packages for those that help me process everything. I've built a Hook & Hackle Xi 4wt and a TFO Mangrove 8wt and I loved both. Had TFO or H&H had a blank I was looking for I'd have gone with them desu. I have a specific look in mind for the 6wt. I primarily fish salt and warm water so this would also be my "light" rod.

It's kinda hard to get a good salt reel for cheap. A Penn Battle combo costs 139.99 and gets you a 6000 size reel and a 9' rod but I would go for the Spinfisher V combo which is 189.99 and gets you another foot of rod, though a 6500 sized reel which is pretty huge. Battle combo unfortunately doesn't list the lures its rated for.

I went the super cheap route with my first saltwater setup. got a Shimano IX reel for 12 bux new. My rationale was that if I ruined this reel, it would not be a great loss. I've been using it at the surf and has even been dunked in saltwater. I also don't have to worry about taking it apart to clean it because it's cheap, so no loss if I fuck it up.

The reel is still holding up good despite saltwater use. Now it's part of my "invite a friend to fish" setup.

I run Rio InTouch Striper 30ft Sink 400gr and Rio InTouch Striper Intermediate for my Saltwater sink tip. I haven't gone after cobia on fly yet but I'm told intermediate and sink tips are the standard for it. I've been researching the Grand Slam line and I'd actually consider running it myself. I run the SA redfish lines on the flats.

Went looking for one at my local store today and man was it disappointing. So much plastic and flimsy super thin metal...
My dad has a landing net he bought in the 70's, all aluminium construction and thick aluminium at that, heavy duty net that has never been changed or repaired, I think it's an Abu Garcia but the markings are long gone, of course he doesn't want to lend it to me lmao.
It kinda looks like pic related but with a different net.
