this. I mean, i don't normally listen to music when /out/ - especially not in wooded areas or by rivers. But I'm English, and often when I'm walking on Moorland, the area is barren and the path is long, so I'll put on some ambient music to keep me going. I listen to Brian Eno's The Big Ship when I reach the top of a mountain and it's a kino experience.

I agree about recorded music, but one of my last outings I brought a little v9 battery powered guitar amp and a electric. Somehow putting down some real dirty blues on a lake in the the Rockies felt real good

Sometimes i do hikes to build up my endurance. It's my version of going to the gym. People work out with music all the time, why is this different? I often hike by myself and sometimes stupidly burn myself out while i'm deep in the shit, and a song with a good beat can keep me on pace. Lastly, sitting by a fire or a creek or whatever with one earbud in listening to Townes Van Zandt with one ear and nature with the other is like no other

i decompress in a sauna 3 times a week or so and often times ill throw on an episode of a podcast i like (usually planet money) in the background. I dont think ive ever gone for a run without headphones.
I don't kayak alone (its something i do with my wife) but if it was something i did a few times a week i might bring a little speaker. that being said ive never worn headphones on a hike or when i do nature walks with the dogfriend.
