However, the underlying idea is (basically) sound in that you need to be sure you are familiar with your boat, maintain the engine if you choose to have one, and don't go into weather beyond your skills. Also, sure, pay attention to the boom, but that's really second nature to anyone familiar with sailing and you might say the same about not driving too fast in the rain or driving drunk. In short, this "be careful of..." list was generated by someone who knows jack shit about sailing and wants to throw out reasons another idiot like himself shouldn't try to sail without a bit of instruction.
By the way, I might add that as a sailboat, you almost always DO have the right of way over any powered vessel, though of course you should exercise caution because people who are the kind of idiots who just buy a powerboat and go vroom vroom don't know shit about any of that. Likewise, it's completely incorrect that "most people who own sail boats (sic) don't know how to use them properly and get them selfs (sic) in trouble." In fact, most people who own sailboats know a shit ton more about their vessel, the weather, and seamanship than the vast majority of people who own a powered vessel and treat it like a car that floats a couple of weekends a month during the summer.
