I made myself a wilderness survival bag. I am going out tomorrow to test it out. I am going to ride my bike out into the wilderness and camp without a tent. I want to learn some essential skills such as: Fire building, sheltermaking, purifying water, hunting, edible plants.
If you have any suggestions or other skills that I should try to develop, please let me know.

I will post my BOB contents when I get home.

regarding whether or not it is safe to sleep without a tent depends on the weather. (Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.) If it is a nice summer night there should be no problem. If it is freezing winter, then you need shelter.

Read some articles or watch some youtube videos on wilderness survival bags (Some people make bug out bags, but that is slightly different, more /K/ oriented)

Also don't be so impatient with your thread. one or two bumps is adequate. This is a new-ish board it might take some time for people to respond. This isn't /b/ or /v/ where your thread is instantly buried.

yes, you can start out by your immeadiate surroundings, surely you have some idea of your local fauna?

no, but if you dont use a tent, atleast use a bivy, bring a tarp and something to lie on (sleeping pad)

now, now, slow down cowboy, I recommend you walk a short hike of maybe 2 days and one night and if you like it you can gradually increase the lengths of your hikes
a 200 mile trail is something I wouldnt think about yet

Well not the whole trip is through no civilization so I plan on refilling it on every gas station I walk by. And then those long walking distances with no civilization have I believe one camping site somewhere around so I'm pretty sure I could find water there, I'll just have to manage it well and not drink too much in one day. Pretty sure I like it, I'll know for sure if I love it after this journey. I've already decided it, I'm doing an internship on canvasing for water pollution and helping out up in Santa Barbara and I want to walk there. I know it sounds a little ridiculous but i'm not changing my mind.

This anon has some good advice my friend. Water is going to be very important to you. I would bring some iodine tabs and maybe a large freezer bag to help you guesstimate the right amount of water you're purifying. Boiling is just as good, but you need to be sure you can make a fire. Many places have strict fire regulations, you can bypass many of them by using a stove instead of a campfire. Check your local laws, and also the laws of other areas you might be moving through.

Bivvy sacks are sleeping bag covers or tiny little one man tents depending on what kind of model you go for. They're cheap and lightweight but I can't recommend them for new guys because proper tarp setups can be tricky depending on the weather. They really take some getting used as well, the first night is always rough.

Bug out bags are just bags that people keep packed in their house or car for emergencies. They're usually packed with lots of useless crap and weigh a ton.

Most definetely, making sure the fire is controlled is very important, putting rocks around it, is the simplest and fastest way (apart from carrying a small stove)
a bit more safer would be digging a fire hole

basically a rainproof shelter, it can range from a really small tent to just an extra layer for your sleeping bag
personally I use one that's just an extra layer of water proof and heat reflecting fiber and just put it around my sleeping bag

just make sure you have something to lie on, if you dont seperate your bag from the ground with a tarp or sleeping pad odds are you'll get pretty wet and uncomfortable

seems like my only threats are vipers but they eat desert rodents so i should be safe as long as i don't with them, i hope. Black bears but that would be way more rare and more up north. Apparently coyotes are my biggest threat I think.

Rainy weather questions:

Do synthetic sleeping bags actually provide warmth when soaked? I've slept in some that were very damp and it was OK.

If my thermals get soaked, assuming I wring out the excess, is it better to sleep in them or naked?

At 2 deg c/36 deg f, if I wrapped a piece of plastic around me in the rain and huddled into a tree, how many layers would I need to be safe from hypothermia?

Get yourself a folding saw, OP. Light, compact, fast, and cuts logs like no tomorrow without expending too much energy. You'll still need a small hatchet or knife to split it, but with a saw, you can section off smaller pieces to haul back to camp.

Naked. Dry them out over a fire or something before you put them on. Wet clothes in a sleeping bag is asking for trouble.

Walking is hard work if you do it all day with gear on your back. Eating a bit less than you normally would will become an issue fairly quickly, as will missing out on types of food your body needs. At least bring a couple packets of dry soup mix. They're dirt cheap, and you will appreciate them by the end of the trip.

'Not drinking too much' will negatively effect you within a day. Dehydration is no joke. You're going to be exercising all day, every day. Your body will use lots of food and lots of water, and you will suffer if you don't replace it.

Also, walking 200 miles in a week is not going to happen. Serious speed hikers can put away 40 miles in a day, but the type of person who does that won't be carrying their camping gear.

As an inexperienced backpacker, I wouldn't expect to walk more than 15 miles in a day, which puts you at 2 weeks at the minimum. It wouldn't be terribly surprising if you wanted to rest after 10.

You definitely need more than peanut butter, tortillas and a gallon of water for this kind of thing. Your body is going to be burning way more calories than it is used to. You're going to be sweating, which means losing both water and salt that need to be replaced.

Also, 200 miles in a week is a pretty unrealistic goal. 3mph is considered a fast hiking pace for someone packed with gear. If you hiked at 3mph for 8 hours a day, it would still take you over 8 days to go 200 miles.

3mph for 8 hours for 8 straight days with a loaded pack and only PBJ in your belly?

Seriously, think about it.

It's got nothing to do with luxury or comfort, but making sure that your body has enough fuel to keep going.

If you get woozy and pass out on the third day because you're dehydrated, exhausted and undernourished then you're not surviving.

I looked through your list again. As a rule, all wire saws suck. You dont need rags, a small towel will suffice. You dont need three rolls of duct tape, thats stupid. If you think youll need a lot of tape for taping trees back together or whatever, carry electrical tape. No tinfoil, you saving your survival cuisine? Get a fleece blanket instead of wool. You dont need a 2.5 gallon jug for water, youll never carry that much when youre moving- youre going to end up wasting water you took the time to make potable. Just get a couple surplus canteens. Try to avoid cotton clothing like jeans, they absorb moisture and lose all insulation and theyre heavy. You dont need a heavy coat unless its winter. Ditch the poncho, you have trash bags. Dont bother wigh antibiotics, youll have no way of knowing what youre infected with, they might have no effect and you might not have enough to cause effect. Just clean your cuts well and keep shit out of them. Carry some betadine to clean them, it kills everything and it smells nice. A shake flashlight is a good idea if its not too bulky. I know ill catch hell, but I hate headlamps, theyre just awkward to use. Get a good, waterproof 90-120 lumen LED flashlight. Yes to the folding saw. Yes to the blade sharpener. Yes to the sleeping bag. YESYESYES bug repellant

The best suggestion I can offer and no one remembers to have this, is a calm mind. Take the gear you have currently get the dirt time and adjust as needed based on your environment. Go during all seasons and weather.

Buy quality tarp, quality sleeping bag (possibly look into the military bivvy system), quality boots that cover at least to the ankles. A few pairs of strong, quality socks, a filter like the katadyn mentioned, a survival/wilderness book (ex. Wildwood Wisdom). An edible plants book. A quality mess kit and cookware set for cooking and boiling. Quality drinking bottle (nalgene has good plastic ones or go stainless), quality hatchet and buck knife and a 12ga shotgun will be the most ideal due to being able to use birdshot for small game and buckshot and slugs for large game. A remington 870 or mossberg 500 will work perfectly. Alternatively, you could buy a .22 pistol like a Ruger mark III and a rifle (semi or bolt) in some .308 or 30-06.

Bring extra food, jerky, peanut butter, beans, rice, flour, and one extra pair of clothes. Bring some salt. And get a pack of bic lighters as well as another starter like magnesium block or firesteel. And lastly, a roll of paracord. Quick and dirty basics for long term camping and hiking.

If you didn't get the hint. Don't cheap out on anything, also pay up for more quality items.

There's a list of priorities for survival.
Core body temperature control. This, primarily, is your clothing, and it's where honestly most of your money will and should be spent. Quality boots cannot be had for under $100. Synthetic and wool clothing is expensive. But you will be wearing this clothing every day, and it will do more to keep you alive than anything in your kit, if you wear the appropriate clothing. This also covers your sleeping gear. I carry a $20 wool blanket and a $30 thermal bivvy. Some people carry $200 sleeping bags. Multiple options for your budget.

Next priority is water. And this will cost you next to nothing. 64oz steal water bottle. $30. Handy for transporting and boiling water. 2L hydration bladder. Clear plastic, I carry a platypus. This is the only plastic water container I carry, and I carry it because it is useful for purifying water via the SODIS method, and as a solar shower, as well as on the trail easy hydration. With both of these, you can get rid of any microbial life in water. This will keep you safe unless you are consuming toxic run-off or heavy metals. Going somewhere this is an issue, a lifestraw is $20.

With body temperature control and water covered, (at least for non-sandy water poor environments), you can survive in the wild for a week or more.

Backpack? Eh. Depending on the size of your kit, what you get can vary. I go for light and easy to transport, so my backpack ran me about $40. If you are of the over-prepare with stuff instead of knowledge crowd, you need a much bigger bag.

Fire starting is an essential in the woods. Bic lighter, what, $2? Waterproof match box+strike anywhere matches? $5? Misch metal rods can be had for as low as $5.

To put a long thread short, I'm going to hike it from Cardiff to Rhyl through the Cambrian Mountains solo in Wales. My prep is good but I am inexperienced. In my defence, I'm spending the entirety of June practising camping techniques, hiking around my local area and other shit I'll be doing up there.

Still, the entire trip will run me about 400km (248.5 miles) total. Average human speed is about 5km/h. If I wake up at 7am and spend an hour getting ready and having a good breakfast, I'll leave at 8am and spend till 5 or 6pm hiking before I stop to set up camp.

At this speed, I'll finish the entire thing in 8 days, leaving me 6~ days to pace myself. People have told me it's doable but I could use as many varied opinions and advice as possible because I want to do this right.

Food tips greatly appreciated. Any idea on how to find food in the wilds of Wales?

Well, I'm not a britfag so I don't know what's edible in Wales, but for that kind of hiking you're going to need lots of protein and potassium. Can you fish along the way? Because fish is an excellent good for this kind of thing. Otherwise leafy greens, beans, dried fruit, etc.

Also, it's good that you're thinking ahead about pacing. Energy conservation is important on long treks. Keep your daily goals flexible and realistic, plan ahead and know which parts of the trip may take you longer because of terrain limitations and weather.

A plan I've found that works well for me is to start the day with complex carbs like oatmeal or cereal, then switch to more protein heavy foods as the day goes on. Dinner time is usually an all-around mix of protein, carbs, fat and salt to replace what was lost during the day.

You're probably going to be burning 3,000ish calories a day on this trip, so your body will burn just about anything you put in it. Keep simple sugars to a minimum though, as they can speed dehydration and cause energy crash.

I don't really like the fully-prepped dehydrated meals, but dehydrated ingredients like veggies, oats, pasta, etc can save weight and still make your meals a little more enjoyable/nourishing.

I'd look in to cured meats, too. Salami, summer sausage, jerky, etc. High protein, salt and fat but not too much weight.

Unless you're incredibly fit and experienced or you own ultralight gear, you can't sustain a 5km an hour pace when carrying shelter and food; you'll probably average somewhere between 3 and 4km/hr (that upper limit would be INSANELY taxing for a first timer, and probably impossible in mountainous terrain). Realistically, that trip will take you between 12 to 16 days of walking if you walk 10 hours a day. If you walked 12 hours a day, which is possible with the day light hours there right now, you could probably get the trip done in 10 days, but your feet will be absolutely fucked at the end.

Don't bother hunting if 14 days is your maximum. Buy along the way if it's an option, if not take dried foods to save on weight (lightest for 2 weeks I can think of is rice + milk powder + cooking oil for fat/flavour + salt).

It comes down to how experienced you are. Because you're asking these questions, I assume you're not that experienced, so I think it's definitely worth the money for the extra few days.

For one It's much easier to appreciate the sites when you have some breathing room. But more than that it'll save you from doing something retarded like fording a high river because you don't want to miss a flight.

I want to go outside sometimes too, but I think my entire province is basically owned by farmers, so I'm not sure if there's anywhere I can go and do anything fun like build a bow and arrows or start a camp fire or flint knapping or whatever else is fun to do in the woods without getting in trouble (I'm fairly sure you can't cut trees or start a fire in federal/provincial parks in the open, right?)

also there are no places further than 1km from a road here, I think. It makes it less "wilderness-y"
