I drove to Switzerland in a Skoda estate with the rear seats removed, cooked on a gas stove, washed in a mountain stream, slept on an air mattress in the back, woke up right next to the hiking route.
I'm doing this again this year in a Peugeot 307 in the French Alps. A van could arguably be nicer, but cars get you there way faster and need less fuel. I don't see the point of the tent thing.
