How big is your pack? Im thinking 45L is plenty big for my hike because im going pretty light for a few nights, a week max depending on my pace. Just trying to gauge what the norm is for an /out/tistic faggot

I have an Osprey volt 60 so my pack is 60L, which is pretty big as far as packs go, however I tend to overpack and I have a lot of budget gear that doesn't compress much so it's always full to the brim when I go on overnight hikes

Slowly working towards an ultralight setup though, gonna invest in a smaller ultralight pack sometime this year

I've got an assortment of packs ranging from a 17L daypack to a 110L hunting pack for hauling out meat and packing heavily insulated hunting clothes. My go-to for routine backpacking is a 60L .

Mummy bag.
Small 1p tent (thinking of upgrading that too. Have a snugpak ionosphere but was told its made with toxic materials)
1.1 liter kettle stuffed with smaller goods like wet wipes, small bit of ace wrap, firesteel ect
Rain poncho
Headlamp (can be worn if space is an issue)
Small paperback book (if it storms hard i dont want to just stare at the top of the tent. Thats no fun)
One change of undies/socks and a warm toplayer in case temp drops
Waterbottle fits nicely in my tin cup
Thats pretty much it except my food. Some nice coffee, oatmeal and pb. Maybe a few sticks of summer sausage idk
I also really want to take my hatchet. I know i dont need it but i like to have it and its only 2 lbs. im not some hardcore weight weenie im taking coffee and a book for goodness sake. should strap on the outside of my pack/belt easy enough

About to go on an excursion tomorrow so I’ve got it all laid out. 2P tent, sleeping bag/pad, yeti + smart water bottle for sawyer mini squeeze, etekcity stove with fuel, mess kit, aeropress coffee system, two memehouse meals for dinners, oatmeal for breakfast, trail mix/kind bars for lunch and a bottle of red for relaxing. Off spray because the island I’m going to has pretty bad mosquitoes from what I’ve heard. Other than that some miscellaneous essentials like a knife, lighters, rope, a shit shovel, wet wipes, trash bag cuz I never leave a trace and sunglasses.

I’d highly recommend the aeropress if you’re a coffee fan, way better than anything else available and it collapses pretty decently.

Compresses down just fine, and extra space if I need it. With my gear, I don't think I would really need anything over 50L, but if I need to pack in extra water the additional 10L really helps.

gregory baltoro 75. i use it for everything from overnighters and up because it eats tons of weight, i usually need a bear can, and i'm lazy as fuck about compressing, and if it's just a short trip i like comforts like beer and fresh meat and vegetables.

Pole is for my shelter and when I'm feeling creaky. Sue me. Only people who haven't hiked with an umbrella question its worth. I only have to put my rain jacket on if it's cold. Plus it's doubles as a door for my flat tarp if there's a crazy storm.

Oh, wait. I was just automatically assuming it's a dick-size thread, as is about every thread that starts with "how big…", no matter the board.

My pack is about 45l. It's nice for a weekend outing with a tent, a long day of climbing or a week of hut-to-hut travel, but if I wanna do more, or combine any of the above, I need something bigger, but all the bigger things also have hundreds of unessary straps and pockets and gadgets.

Flat tarp, polycryo, pegs, thin CCF mat, quilt, puffy, long John's, socks, wind jacket, wind pants, peanut butter jar, spork, op sak, 1L water bottle, 3L water bag, filter, fak, sak, repair kit, tooth brush, charger, battery pack, phone. Pretty much it. Changes a little depending on conditions.

I had a modern but cheapish 75l bag for 5-7 day trips, but found it a pain in the ass. I use the 65l bundeswehr combat ruck for the same job. Because the side pockets are external they don't get squished out of use by a full main bag, I hate packing the modern sleek looking bags, they're basically a bucket as far as I'm concerned. I'm not jumping out of a plane I don't need aerodynamics

I use a 70L pack but I must be terrible at packing because it's almost always full and heavy even when I'm just doing two nights. I use a two person tent because I got a good deal on a Marmot and I'm not looking to invest in a mummy tent right now but other than that I'm not carrying a lot of extra gear, just the same stuff that most people in this thread are talking about. I think I do overpack water though, one of my most serious fears in the backcountry is not being able to refill on water.

Thats the one place I recommend all my friends splurge. Fancy ass tents arnt that much better than my shitty one performance wise. Expensive bags are nice but theyll only shave a pound maybe two off a comparable size ozark bag from walmart. Theres a million ways for yuppies to make walking innawoods an expensive hobby but a good sleeping bag is definitely the best return on investment you can make

30 litre for summer. Only taken it for three days at a time but I think I could cram a few more days food in.

My other pack which I use for the remainder of the year is 80 liters with the removable lid, which usually gets left at home.
