They were only worth that much back in England. Beaver pelts were a dime a dozen on the frontier, so often times you would just give some Indians a couple blankets and a kettle in exchange for a dozen or so pelts, then ship them back home and charge absurd rates because beaver was in vogue. Also it was only a brief point where pelts were actually worth that much, though at one point it was actually more than gold by weight.

No they aren't, they're bloody annoying to portage.

Kayaks are easier to learn, and to paddle solo in the wind. They're also better in surf. A canoe is better in every other possible way.

I think it's just a matter of preference, assuming you're in a place where both are an option. I go on float trips every once in a while and I always get a kayak because they're so much easier to maneuver.

A canoe is defenetly fine on open water, as long as you are confident in your paddling partner.

Same way (I think it's called the cockpit rim), but a canoe with a carrying yoke (or a double with someone to help) is easier and better balanced, especially if you have to carry it and your pack a mile or three through the woods.
