It takes practice but it's entirely doable. I do it alone with 79lbs onto foam pads. The bitch is getting it back up there after an 7 hour row. The length and the lack of side handles is half the difficulty. My old sit-on-top with handles on the gunwails was really easy to lift.

you're looking at an 800lbs Tupperware Special if you want new.
but if you don't want a plastic boat, and seriously you shouldn't want one. you are looking at used or heavy.
Nova Craft as I mentioned before is good
Clipper canoes are also very popular and maybe a little better
Both make a large range of quality boats. you can get something new but heavy for around your budget or used and get something better. a lightly used boat could save you a few hundred dollars, and a boat thats been around the block a few times could save you $500-1000. However 1970s and 80s canoes might not be worth the hassle, I keep mine going out of sentimentality, it was my grand dad's, but it now has 3 major patches. and will need more by the end of the season. The downside is that it is heavy and slow, the upside is that it's very very stable. I have had this >>1311355 in the ocean and fast moving rivers.

the next things to think about and this is far more important than often gets talked about. What style of canoe do you want / need?
What do you want to do with it?

ok so, the yoke is NOT a seat, you will break it.
you are looking at something 18 foot (3seat) or 20 foot (4 foot) canoe, some 16.5 - 17' canoes will allow you to carry enough weight that you could place a friend sitting on the floor of the hull rather than hauling gear. A clipper 17 ranger is rated for 900lbs but it will be low in the water but I wouldn't take it on a river with more than 500lbs.

this is not a rule but in general a bigger boat is going to be harder to handle with fewer people especially if you are not experienced. a shorter boat will carry less but be easier to handle. the greater the beam the more stable but slower the boat. and a rounder hull will be more maneuverable but tippier

canoe styles such as Prospector or Trapper or Bobs Special are combinations of hull shape, beam, length, shape, ect. that are based on classic Chestnut Canoe designs. some people may make variations on these designs though so you can't always say that a Prospector is a Prospector.

Honestly for what you want, if this is your first canoe, I would suggest getting a $100-200 kijiji beater and learn how to patch fiberglass. Play with it a season and find out what you like and don't like about it, then look for a better canoe next year

A. That's why you buy used boats off outfitters. Sure they are knocked up but they are cheap as anything.

B. Look for Duralite boats, they are cheaper than kevlar and CF. They are not as light but pretty light.

C. Aluminum canoes are amazing in the right circumstances. I really don't want to carry them but they are still amazing.

D. Kayaks indeed suck dick. If you are in fast moving water they are the best thing since sliced bread, otherwise give me a canoe on nearly anything.

I ran a souris river Quetico 16 a few years in the BWCA/Quetico. I liked that boat a lot, seemed a lot more stable than the We-bone-yah I ran before.

I think it depends on what they've made before. People with mechanical aptitude, a sense of craft, and experience building things should get a cedar strip canoe fairly correct on the first try especially if there is a kit.

Look at Nick Offerman's canoe. Obviously he's a craftsman and an excellent woodworker, but he was also quite successful in his first build.

There were two, a Minnesota II 18' and a Minnesota 3. I liked both of those boats although the 3 was a sailboat in the wind and a pain to portage due to the length, balance on the shoulders wasn't quite right either but it was the first generation of the 3. I really did like those boats but something about the utilitarian nature of the SR and it feeling more stable when I was doing stupid things like gunwalpumping was nice.

Gunwalpumping: Stand on the gunwals balance carefully (easy in an old aluminum boat). Do a squat slowly without falling off the boat. Do it again, and again and you can cross a lake. It's fun when you are board.

Do it on an aluminum boat with a friend on the other side and see who stays on the longest.

86lbs 17' long 2.5' wide and catches wind like a motherfucker. add to that, the yoke might not be perfectly centered by weight, the stern of mine is slightly heavier than the bow so I either have to put weight in the bow or pull down heavy on the gunwales as I portage.

Yes but it ultralight canoes aren't as nice to paddle as ones with a bit more weight to them. Also, I spend far more time IN my canoe than portaging.

Big boats are generally more stable when loaded equivalently, but will be less stable when the load is the same weight. A Quetico is more equivalent to an Escape, though, so that planform might suit your style better.

however I don't know the river you are on, your boat, or your skill level. If you are a competent soloist on lakes you should be ok, but if you haven't run the river with someone else at least once I would suggest doing so. Rivers can get shallow in spots and you can get going much faster than you'd think, hitting a rock can put a hole in your boat. It can also have lots of hazards, running into a fallen branch can easily kill you.

know about dams, wears, and falls ahead of time, everything else can be dealt with as it comes up and conditions will change day to day / week to week.

I have a river that runs through my city, and if I really want to solo I carry a cable bike lock and lock up the boat to anything I can find, then take the bus back to my truck, then retrieve the canoe. otherwise 2 people and 2 cars or have someone who can pick you up

I agree most most builders should do glass over cedar strip. It's beginner friendly and the end product is useable. An even easier way to learn boat construction is to by building a Dinghy instead, something Stitch and Glue with minimal shaping.

That being said I don't think it's too much of a leap to do a pure fiberglass boat. If you can borrow another boat to do a male mold with you just need to understand how fiberglass is applied. Alternatively you can carve your own shape out of styrofoam, giving you both the freedom and the burden to mess around with hull design.

Ultimately the people who enjoy being on the water, and the people who enjoy building boats (of any size) are two barely touching circles in a venn diagram. Most people who start boat builds never finish them and those that do could almost always have worked minimum wage for the hours they spent on the project and brought a boat instead. Many will spend more time building the boat than they will using it. That's not to say don't build a boat. For many people, myself included, There's a good bit of fun in tackling a project and building something for yourself. Recognize though that if you just want to get in the rapids you'd be better off heading to the store than to the garage

funny you should say that, I come from one of the few non fishing families in a small town on the Northumberland Strait, instead the family built boats starting with my great grandfather and continues on with my cousin. often thought about building canoes and asking him working with fiberglass. though I don't know how much would transfer from a 52' fishing boat to a 16' canoe

I like in a small apartment (600-ish sq ft) and want to get into canoe/yakking. Space will be an issue so I don't want anything too large; even better if it's small and or compact/inflatable. I already have a float tube I infrequently use for fishing but its very impractical.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking at base on this?

Canoes and kayaks are both displacement hulls and top speed is determined by the length of the hill. So a 17' canoes top speed is faster than a 14' kayak. The kayak is easier to achieve top speed however. So you'll exert less energy getting to the top speed.

I bought a 12' sportspal for 800$ cdn cash and it has served me well for years. It's really lightweight and as long as you're not a retard the aluminum holds up really well. Plus it's a good size just enough for me and my gf and small enough that It doesn't really fit me and a buddy so they have to get their own setup

Frontiersman is a fiberglass 16' flat bottom canoe with a 3' beam, based on a Chestnut Freight Canoe design. They were built in BC by a few manufactures in the 70s and 80s, good boats but big.

A few guys at the lake I practice at have those pedal drive yacks, they aren't fast and I have no issue keeping pace with them solo, with 2 people in my canoe we can crush them.
