I was walking near some fields in Saxony, Germany and found this crazy rock. Anyone know what it is? I was thinking flourite.

Nice find OP. Am very certain that is flint given the glassy/conchoidal fracture patterns and obvious inclusions. Fluorite tends to cleave perfectly.

i have found shittons of these as a child i know what i'm talking about some looks crystalline and very cool but it's just glass. they vary in color from transparent to yellowish and to deep green.

I see Conchoidal fracture, if those are indeed bubbles it might be glass.

If not I'd say a strange kind of quartz or chert.

But I'm more inclined to say glass.

It’s definitly glass. We had an old glass factory the next town over and you could find a limitless amount of chunks like that. Some where pretty big.

It's Chrysoprase. Harder than steel and glass with a conchoidal fracture and appearence of bubbles. Bright green. Checks out.

yes because it's not glass but slag. it is tainted with various metals giving it color and different crytaline structure. still utterly worthless.

so glass is also harder than glass.

technically steel also varies in hardness, but that's irrelevant in this case.

I find slag glass and marbles in the middle of nowhere all the time. I'm talking like 20 miles from the nearest paved road in the USA. You need to remember that pretty much every thing you see has been trampled for eons by humans and that glass doesn't just rust away. Doubly so for any Europe location.

Yes, but only the heavily doped stuff and only if you keep it right near you all the time or breath in powder from it (bad enough that it'd be glass powder.) It was used to make glassware, plates, and other such things. I have an entire set of stemware (pic) make from some.

The piece of glass in the OP has a chance of being some uranium glass too. Anon just needs to shine a black light on it to find out.

It is glass. You probably hiked in an area where old glass factories produced. Saxony is famous for glass manufacturing.

I'm a geologist and that doesn't look like fluorite. I honestly can't tell you what it is, but it cleaves like glass, and if those dots are little bubbles in it then you're either looking at the rarest most translucent piece of volcanic glass in the world, or it's slag.
It could be something else that I'm not familiar with though.

No, I've picked up a bucket's worth of rough Arizonan Peridot and Obsidian on hikes and they don't have bubbles in them, Obsidian does but Peridot doesn't, and they are usually a lighter, more uniform shade of green.

>purple garnets in the small flask
>pink rose quarts I polished
>chunk of Amber near the top right
>assorted Obsidian droplets (unpolished raw)
>small near gem quality pieces of peridot (raw, in the altoids case)
All picked up from hikes in Arizonan mountain ranges. I half enough Obsidian to fill a half-gallon bucket and enough rough peridot currently filled to the top of a 2 gallon bucket. It's not worth anything though, it's just kinda cool to have.
