>>1315473recreational fishing as a whole is a meme. fly fishing is a meme, baitcasters are memes, hooks are memes, and thats all because fishing recreationaly isn't about the fish. if it was about fish we'd fish with nets like people in third world countries where fishing is about the fish. so with that out of the way, just because something is a meme doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. there are pros and cons of every style of fishing
>conventional fishingless intimidating to get in to because it's not so oddly mystical. you can go to any walmart and for about $100 you can have a spinning rod and reel, line, and a few basic pieces of tackle and start fishing. you might not catch anything right away, and your gear might not be the best, but you will have your feet securely wet and you will have plenty of potential to catch fish.
the pros of fly fishing is it's been scientifically proven to be relaxing in the same way as yoga, though while you're still going through the growing pains of learning to cast and learning to fish at the same time, it can be frustrating. i can think of plenty of occasions where i put away a fly rod and went home because i got frustrated. it's probably going to be more expensive, too. the cheapest worth-while fly rod combo i can think of is a cabelas wind river/big horn fly rod/reel combo. you just need flies and leader material, and you will probably be coming in over $100 and outgrow your gear in a season realising you want either a faster or slower action rod, different weight rod, or something broke. i personally find fly fishing to be much more fun than spin fishing, and the increased cost is worth the increased fun. a bass on a 9 foot 8 weight rod is always going to be more fun to me than a bass on a medium power 7 foot spinning rod, just because it makes the fish feel like it's fighting harder, and i worked harder for the fish so i get some satisfaction out of that, but im also the kind of masochist who does an SL1 run on dark souls
